Best album of the eighties? 20:02 - Oct 9 with 15349 viewsmarkrtid

U2's The Joshua Tree has been named the best album of the 1980s.

Is it though?

New order albums aren't that consistent. Good greatest hit band, but too many filler songs imo.

Technique is a brilliant album. And would be a contender for me as it squeezed into that decade as did the moody but seminal Closer by Joy Division.

Some great albums already mentioned on this thread.

Doolittle also in the conversation.

Certainly one of the best debut albums of the 80s - along with the Roses. People who knock UB40 are generally talking out of their arses.

Not a lot to dislike about UB40 from 1980-82 when they wrote their own stuff. Their first half dozen singles were top notch.

Plenty to dislike about them once they got to number 1 with a cover and then went down the path of becoming Reggaewaddywaddy.

More Specials is a great lost album. I can’t stand it is one of the greatest songs ever.

The Jam were mostly shite.

The first 3 UB40 albums are so strong. I don’t mind Labour of Love either. Then it was mostly about paying the bills. I remember seeing a photo of the band with their families and partners and kids and relations and roadies and it was like the population of a medium-sized town in Dorset. A lot of mouths to feed. I don’t begrudge whatever they did after Labour Of Love. Mind you I don’t listen to any of it either. And as for Reggaewaddywaddy 🤣 Brilliantly put.

Was the 80's all that good?

Dancing to anything by 'The Human League' and Bela Lugosi's Dead" at The Padded Cell' each Saturday night seems a abit hollow now after a 5-4 QPR win.
Is this what getting old is?

Pink floyd the wall

Released 30th November 79, so it`s an almost. 41 years later, still filling stadiums. Can`t see Drake, Ariana grande and Dua lipa reaching that level.

'You didn't know that was wrong, but now you do. If you do it again, I'll know you are doing it on purpose.'

Ride the Lightning-Metallica.

For me, some might say Master of Puppets but I prefer the rawness of 'ride'.

Master for me. Agree about the rawness of Ride and it's a close one but in my opinion I think Master was the apogee for Metallica and laid the foundations for their mega success with the Black album. Plus the last that they did with Cliff makes it all the more poignant... I still get a lump in my throat when I hear the opening bars to Orion.

But best 80s album for me has to be Reign in Blood by Slayer.

100% this.
Thst first album is brilliant as were the first 4 or 5 singles. Red Red Wine was the turning point for me. I can't stand that track.

Just had a re-issue with all sorts of other recording at the time that were not released.

Also with alternative versions of songs like horns added on "The Ballad of Dorothy Parker".

I suppose Purple Rain should be mentioned but its not my favourite.

Smells like a trout farm in here

LTTI is hands down the best album from that scene. Aged far better than the rest imo. Should've been a bigger album. Saw their reunion a few years back and they still had it for sure.

Didn’t Prince have something like 200 songs to choose from for Sign o’ the times?
