Murdoch's influence has diminished over the years and was always a bit overstated. His papers have always been good at following public opinion and jumping on board (Thatcher in '79 after years of supporting Labour, Blair in '97 after years of Tory shilling, back to Cameron in 2010 and 2015). Everyone was caught out by May's abject failure a fortnight ago.
Dacre and the Mail are far more influential. I genuinely believe him and his paper are a pervasive and insidious influence on British public life. The Mail's power and influence in the Westminster corridors of power can't be overstated.

Maybe. I'll still maintain that the power of the print (and online a bit) media is a shadow of what it was during the period when "it was the Sun what won it". Dacre has power, but not all that much compared to Twitter.
Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

The Mail and Dacre's influence is more directly applied on those who yield the power itself. The "Daily Mail Test" is a much used phrase in Whitehall.

No question. Check this book out man if you have a mo.
His portrayal of Dacre is (unsurprisingly) unflattering, and explores how influential he is. He's had cabinet ministers pleading with him to go easy on them. His staff are portrayed as those who know they've sold their souls, but are so well paid it's worth the Faustian pact.
Of course he's coming from a different direction (the author), but it's a very revealing read as to how tightly controlled our media is, both nationally and internationally.

I've not seen anyone get the better him on the subject Islam.
Which isn't surprising given his intelligence, eloquence and non-conformism.
That one of his most frequent assertions (mentioned above) needs stating sums up what passes for modern thought - how dare mainstream opinion call opposing views homophobic when they indulge a bloodthirstily homophobic ideolgy.
