Whatever Trotsky's (many) failings, I do think his writings about Germany are worth reading, particularly as despite the widespread fascination with Hitler and the Nazis there seems to be very little understanding of basic facts e.g. was the Nazi economy a capitalist economy?
On a recent thread (about the bombing of Germany), someone said something along the lines that the Germans 'all voted for Hitler', whereas in the last free election the combined Communist and Socialist vote was larger than the Nazi vote (and that was after over a decade of catastrophic blunders by the German Communist Party). Trotsky advocated a 'united front' of these parties against the Nazis. Whether such a thing was actually possible is another matter (especially as the official Communist line was that everyone who didn't support the Communists was a fascist). The worse thing was that the German working class went down without a fight. |  |

There aren't many more than a hatful of people left alive who were able to make an adult decision of such a demonstration in the context of the early 1930's. Even Churchill hoped in 1935 that Hitler may make a positive contribution to Europe:

People who might be swayed by such a picture would do well to learn more about the era and also to consider the informal situation (perhaps the salute might have been followed by some ironic family goose-stepping for the camera?).
The mentality of using this to justify attitudes to race and immigration is one that values rationality as 'something to do with food during the war'.

I think you're right, Brooklyn. I'd made a snide comment about "Bertie" (his father's name for him) above, but I really thought that the royals would be over him by now. I mean, his views weren't openly more pro-Nazi than a fair chunk of British society at the time.
