well here's hoping Everton are washed out after their exit from Europe

I have this down for another draw but fear it will be another of these if we have a line up that includes SWP in any shape or form (and I fully expect Barton to give Everton a helping hand)

universally challenged

did anyone notice that a building to be identified in one of the questions on universally challenged was someone's avatar on here. i just shouted that's someone's piccy on loft for words and looked like a tit. working out the florence nightingale answer was my most impressive effort

TUPE

don't have any idea on employment law but does anyone else? if a firm get's taken over does the new employer have to take on the existing staff? have been advised that my job may be in jeopardy depending on how the new owner wants to proceed. my understanding from reading TUPE is that if the firm is essentially the same after the transfer then the employer has no choice. i can't see what the point would be in buying a firm unless it was under those circumstances in my particular circumstance

books not to read before you die
at 10:04 11 Sep 2011

if i can assist anyone in shortening their list of books to read before they die can i suggest not to pick up foucault's pendulum by umberto eco.

read the name of the rose and, while it was a war of attrition, there was a good story line running through. have just struggled through foucault's pendulum and don't have a clue what it was about and it feels like i've lost some brain capacity trying to understand it.

also wouldn't suggest reading war and peace. keep thinking i will read it and when i start reading i recognise the storyline. then by page 100 i can't differentiate my nicolai nicolayevichs from my andrei andreyevichs and give up, which i realise i must do each time

would recommend gormenghast, knowledge of angels, i am the messenger, perfume
