Clive - You bow to no one. LFW is one of the very best fan sites in any sport. Passionate, informed, funny. As for the trolls: Illegitimus non carborundum est. |
| News Comment | QPR blow Forest hoodoo out of the water — Report at 04:42:23
The best reports come from momentous occasions. Well done Clive. What can you say when the 800 lb gorilla gets off your back? Cheers mate, I'm sure you'll find another ride soon. |
| News Comment | QPR shake London derby monkey in fine style — report at 00:50:37
Thanks Clive. A fine week to be writing on QPR. What would have been the betting odds that you would award 8 each to the referee and Junior? About 8 million to one, I expect. I'd dearly like to believe that his improvement is due to changed circumstances all round (JFH & coaches/new Dad/playing well internationally) than opportunistic baiting for a new contract. Who knows? As others have said, I'd take him on reduced wages but if he keeps playing like this he will be noticed by PL teams. |
| News Comment | Improving QPR comfortable winners against bad-tempered Blues — Report at 03:50:27
Thanks Clive. It's mystifying how R performances can vary so much, but it's nice to read for a change that the manager apparently thought correctly about his selection, and also seems to be man-managing well. Your excellent and scary interview with Uncle Tony confirmed that the pre-January selections had a shop-window flavour. Perhaps now JFH can pick who he likes. Maybe even some of the new crop? 062259, I'd say that "only Hoilett of the big-earning old guard" IS STILL PLAYING regularly. Albeit inconsistently as ever. He's still only 25 but seems to have been around forever. |
| News Comment | Merry Christmas my R’s — Preview at 02:58:09
Good summary Clive. You must get tired of pointing the same things out all the time, but I credit that you always find a different way to do it. I like the big picture embodied in your 3 points. |
| News Comment | Ipswich happy to receive QPR's Christmas gifts - report at 02:28:43
terryb: "What has happened to Junior? He wasn't just our best player, he was the best player on the pitch (easily)! He is playing with confidence & with a smile on his face." His change of form seems to coincide with his decision to (at last) play internationally for Canada. He has played well in 2 qualifying matches so far and received a lot of attention back home which he clearly enjoyed. Subsequent to that he has played with more belief. |
| News Comment | Do Palace need foreign cash to continue progress? Opposition profile at 00:54:34
Thanks Clive. I wonder what specifically Pardew is doing that Warnock wasn't. And why it seems not to work at home. Point of clarification: "Thirdly, the idea that Harris already owns sports teams and therefore knows how they work – he's got the New Jersey Devils ice hockey "franchise" and Philadelphia 76ers baseball side under his wing – offers little reassurance." The 76ers are a basketball team. Neither team is a contender in their sport. |
| News Comment | Arsenal step in as QPR wilt — result at 06:05:57
Thanks Clive. A damning indictment of Redknapp's watch. We are certainly short of options as a result of his incompetence, but the fact that we stayed on the front foot and neutralized them for long periods is encouraging. In the end Sanchez was the difference. With Dunne and Fer healthy we might have drawn and if Charlie and Matt had been a little more accurate we might have won. Although Henry should have been sent off for his pull-back of Ozil. If someone had done that to Charlie we'd be screaming blue murder. |
| News Comment | Barton costs QPR in crucial match yet again - Report at 07:52:56
It's a shame that Our Joey has attracted so much attention in a negative way. The positive story for me is ten men playing as well as they did for most of the game, the successful inclusion of a pair of youngsters, and the traveling support in rare good spirits. What a contrast to 'Arry. Glass is still half full under Ramsey, so on we go. |
| News Comment | The merry-go-round — preview at 02:08:00
Nice preview Clive. "Away games are there to be won, not treated as bonuses. Injuries are merely opportunities for other players to shine. Premier League games are there to be attacked, not feared. QPR have talented players and will bow to nobody. If they are going down, they’re going down swinging. " It's just so refreshing to hear that. I too hope that Ramsey can survive the circling sharks. |
| News Comment | Myths, scapegoats and excuses - Redknapp at 19:47:25
Absolutely nailed it Clive. Speaking of which, this piece should be nailed to the QPR Boardroom door like Martin Luther's 95 theses. Interestingly, ML strongly disputed the claim that freedom from God's punishment for sin could be purchased with money. Football management sin being "fail to plan, plan to fail" then he wasn't half wrong, was he. Flashback to HR in November 2012: “I’m not here for a short-term fix, keep the club up…I want to build something here.†I don't think a "seedy hotel overlooking a dodgy petrol station" (LOL) is what he or anyone else had in mind but that's what can happen without a proper strategy. This all seems to be in Sir Les's hands now. |
| News Comment | Bojan blow fails to mask Stoke progress — opposition profile at 05:03:52
"It looks like a club that finds players and managers out so for all Tim Sherwood’s boasts about his sodding win percentage during six months with an inherited Tottenham squad, do you not just fear another boastful, arrogant, manager – younger with less experience than Hughes – coming into that situation and what it might result in? " +1 If TS comes in it should only be because he can help the team get to a Southampton-like system. He would need to make a very strong case, which ideally should have no reference to his 6-month winning percentage at Spurs. |
| News Comment | The importance of being Les — column at 19:41:13
Thanks Clive. It was all the right messages from TF but it's hard to know if they can be taken seriously given what's actually transpired regarding the youth teams since he arrived. It's also hard to know how much influence Les Ferdinand actually has now, and will have in future. Can't see much changing while Harry is still here. You've been skeptical about Tim Sherwood in past columns. If he is the front-runner, what evidence is there to suggest that he is the best manager to work with Les and others toward the Southampton/Swansea model? |
| News Comment | The Toronto connection - podcast at 05:12:52
Good interview. Dichio is unashamedly pro-QPR when doing his TV work here in Canada. Before the game at Stamford Bridge the other commentators reminded him that in TV work there is no "we" anymore. Dichio said "I know, I know but come on this is Chelsea!!" |
| News Comment | Turning for home — preview at 01:19:49
Thanks Clive. I agree, dreadlocks should be de rigeur for this one. I hope that Zarate gets off on the right foot. He'll soon learn that service is lean and that he has to make the most of any chance at all and that he'll have to track back when our passes go astray, which is most of the time. If we get anything from this game it will likely be a combination of hard core last ditch hand to hand defending, with Rob Green standing on his head, and a fortunate set piece or two. |
| News Comment | The least shocking cup shock - report at 04:33:32
Thanks Clive. Can't be easy writing about that. "The tormentor in chief in red and white was Jamal Campbell-Ryce, a diminutive winger of Jamaican origins"The tormentor in chief in red and white was Jamal Campbell-Ryce, a diminutive winger of Jamaican origins" The sequitur must be that the tormentor in chief in blue and white was Junior Hoilett, also a diminutive winger of Jamaican origin. Instead of being an embarrassment to Jamaicans and Canadians everywhere, Junior, why not ask Jamal for some pointers on how to hold onto the ball? |

Another excellent summary and preview Clive, and I enjoyed the "Elsewhere" rant. Your hard work and dedication is greatly appreciated by me, and I presume by all of your readers. "Happy New Year LFW readers - we’re the sane ones you know." Happy New Year to you Clive. I do hope you're right about our mental condition. |
| News Comment | QPR and Palace grind out bore draw - report at 23:58:55
"A footballing chicken and egg - is it the players’ job to lift the crowd or vice versa? Here the football was dreadful, and the atmosphere non-existent." IMO the players have to lift the crowd, at least initially. Never happened. Little point in going out and buying more strikers in January until the rest of the squad can learn how to pass and retain possession. The ball rarely finds its way forward in any useful way. Full credit to Charlie for so often tracking back to assist with our continual last-ditch defending. |
| News Comment | Travel-sick QPR choke on Giroud's red mist — report at 21:04:09
Thanks Clive. Good to hear the away supporters in full voice. "Even by QPR's appalling standards, the ball retention here was incredible for a professional football team." I agree entirely. If this team was featured in a film, you'd have to call it "The Dispossessed." One wonders just how many of the opposing side would have to get sent off before we could string a few passes together or keep the ball longer than four seconds. We seem to specialize in last ditch defending and speculative long balls forward. I have been keen on Vargas, but am now wondering just how much upside he has. If his pace and dexterity were matched by his passing, ball retention and shooting, then I guess his name would be Sanchez. I agree he is wonderful to watch. A one man wrecking crew. At least we were in it with a chance. Painful to watch us under-perform against ten men, but better than a hiding to nothing a la Tottenham. Almost everyone else in the lower reaches of the table lost on the day as well, so to put lipstick on a pig, "it coulda been worse". |
| News Comment | Rangers rescued by Austin's powerful treble - report at 00:31:35
Thanks Clive. Didn't think we had a hope after going down two, but apparently anything can happen when playing at home. Now if we could only bottle some of that and take it on the road. I've given up trying to figure out the likes of Barton and Hoilett. Hope and despair in equal quantity, and making random appearances. Green and Dunne solid. Again. |
