if i can assist anyone in shortening their list of books to read before they die can i suggest not to pick up foucault's pendulum by umberto eco. read the name of the rose and, while it was a war of attrition, there was a good story line running through. have just struggled through foucault's pendulum and don't have a clue what it was about and it feels like i've lost some brain capacity trying to understand it. also wouldn't suggest reading war and peace. keep thinking i will read it and when i start reading i recognise the storyline. then by page 100 i can't differentiate my nicolai nicolayevichs from my andrei andreyevichs and give up, which i realise i must do each time would recommend gormenghast, knowledge of angels, i am the messenger, perfume [Post edited 1 Jan 1970 1:00]
