Doesn’t happen often, but I agree with OHL here. There are certain heartlands, particularly further North, where non Welsh speakers, including Welsh people aren’t particularly welcomed.

It’s more of a cold shoulder than anything else.

Regarding the article though, two sides to every story. Llanberis and the like rely on and promote tourism. This kind of attitude is more prevalent off the beaten track.

I have lived on Wirral 48 years I know what friendly is about.
People here, even in the affluent areas will engage with perfect strangers .
When dog walking ,it’s even more pronounced .
I have visited north Wales literally thousands of times and have NEVER had a “ friendly” reception . Friendly meaning exchanging pleasantries and there we have it.
Because welsh is the mother tongue ,you will not be seen as anything other than another outsider who is either
1. On the rob
2. Looking to buy a second home
3 Looking to buy a first home
4 As one who will water down the “ welshness” of the village .

Where I live, if you walk into a bar, alone, someone will engage you. Either to share a drink or to argue with you,but yiu won’t be cold shouldered .

I can get by with basic south welsh . I’ve walked into the Spar in Nefyn ,greeted staff, commented on the tywydd ,gone to the till and Diolched and hwyl fawred and got nowt. I actually repeated Hwyl and got a snarling Tara .

This is normal behaviour

Abersoch is an English enclave with expensive properties ,Pwllheli is rather run down and it’s here that you feel the resentment

Frankly, for ne ,the most unwelcoming part of the UK outside the S/E which is horrifically snotty .

This is a trait, this is common ,this is not isolated.
In comparison, visitors to Newcastle. And Northumberland are treated like old friends. Incredible people ,who don’t see language and dialect as an issue

Poll: Christmas. Enjoyable or not

Better?

Who the hell do you think you are? Have you suddenly become the Judge Judy of this forum?

I think there are pockets (and situations) it could be worse on either side.

We’ve all had different experiences that will influence what we think.

That's the second intelligent and non insulting post , perhaps it could catch on.

Never ever had a problem with gogs. Nice people. I have many friends who are North Walian.

Swansea Indepenent Poster Of The Year 2021. Dr P / Mart66 / Roathie / Parlay / E20/ Duffle was 2nd, but he is deluded and thinks in his little twisted brain that he won. Poor sod. We let him win this year, as he has cried for a whole year. His 14 usernames, bless his cotton socks.

It’s your right to buy Keith
I couldn’t disagree more
I visit the place regularly
It’s on our doorstep
My son works in Wrexham
Your suggesting that these ordinary middle age walking ladies would be looking at increasing their social media standing does not make me wantbto buy that at all.
I’ve seen this crap show myself
I’ve been on the receiving end myself . I can handle it deftly or not so subtlety but 60 yr old ladies walking Snowdon ?
Nah
No way

Personally ,the only thing that attracts me to Gogkand are the swimming beaches . Locals friendly? Nah
Last time we were there was in May ,in Mynytho ,where we hired a house for The Rock . I walk our dog four times daily .starting at 7am. Village is not touristy . It has a PO / shop. Wife went in for some cheese . Told her the welsh word and for the purchase she got faraway eyes .
One night, went to the nearest pub in Llanbedrog ,with the dog. On approaching the bar to order a food ,two locals were sat . I stood between them and looked at them both and said , or right lads”
I had a pink Swanse shirt on . They both looked away .
Meal was crap too.

So no, Ivecbeen more times that you and never ever received any welcome as you describe but I’ve not visited with a lively, feisty band

Maybe my part understanding and dialogue in my native countries lingo helped. Who can say. Nicest people to meet on a Wales tour, both football and rugby.

Well,I do not view matters in that way
Language should not divide
It does.
It dies in many other countries ,like Belgium and Canada

You say that you have visited North Wales thousands of times and never had a welcome there. Do you ever think that it maybe something to do with yourself?
Surely after about the hundredth time you would have got the message and gone north to the Lake District?

Must admit that I think there is a perceptible difference between the south (which I consider generally very friendly - even Cardiff) and parts of the north. I had a short break in Porthmadog and the Llyn peninsula early in the year, and did get the sense of the occasional cold shoulder. Although I was christened in Swansea and have lived here on and off for nearly 40 years, I went to school in England, and I think my accent is enough to get an unfavorable reaction from some in the north. What might happen in the north is nothing compared with Scotland though.

It’s never outright hostility or aggression or anything like that.

It’s serving the local behind you at the bar
first or starting to talk to someone in Welsh halfway through a conversation with you. That sort of thing.

I agree it is perceptible though. I think those of us from South Wales who don’t speak Welsh are still considered‘Saes’ in some places.

There’s a good chance these women were overly precious mind. The type of people who go to the media to complain about this sort of thing quite often are.

French ?

Not just French
Many dialects in Netherlands too
People in the Friesland speak a distinct Dutch dialect
Belgium is bilingual by law yet suffers bitter division between the old industrial French speaking areas around Liege and Charleroi and the wealthier French's region around Antwerpen
Divisions ....language ....

North Wales has a reputation for this

That cannot be disputed . It can be defended though as we are through apocryphal accounts

Just has a weeks' visit to the Normandy area, never met a more friendly bunch including young students , obviously they may have a reason to be polite even after 80 years but if they can do it why not SOME of our fellow countrymen.
