Scrap the ineffective Senedd-Welsh Assembly on 07:05 - Jul 13 by felixstowe_jack | They had an independence referendum in Scotland in the last 5 year. The SNP agreed to the terms and even drafted the question. The SNP agreed it would be a once in a generation vote, not an annual vote until they got the result they wanted. It is a pity the Welsh people could not a once in a generation vote on abolishing the Welsh Assembly. All recent poles show support for abolishing the Welsh Assembly are growing. |
The polls show nothing of the sort. The biggest mistake the Scots made was not asking the big questions before the referendum. Now they have been asked and answered the support for Indy is massive, especially after the lies Cameron spouted about remaining in the union meant staying in the EU. Scotland voted to remain remember. As for the Assembly, it’s already been abolished, it’s a parliament and it’s here to stay so get over it, you lost that vote.

You can call a horse a cow but it is still a horse . A parliament has sovereignty over its country . There is one sovereign parliament for all of the UK it is at Westminster. Westminster has devolved certain powers to Scotland, Wales and NI and those bodies have to stick to those powers and are financed by UK taxpayers. Don't you think after 20 years it is time for the Welsh people to have the choice if they think the Welsh Assembly has been good for the whole of Wales and just not Cardiff.

After 20 years the Welsh people should be making decisions for Wales and not Westminster making them for us. Interesting debate in the Senedd this evening. Adam Price, David Lloyd, Delyth Jewel, Rhun Ap Iorweth and even Carwyn Jones spoke very intelligently. Reckless was even laughed at by Tory AM’s. I don’t expect the vote to favour us tonight but it’s a landmark day to have this discussion in our own parliament with everyone present. Annibyniaeth

I didn’t agree with you. I said the people of Wales should have the right to determine their own future with the Senedd as their platforms to air their voices. Take that away and Wales will be a region of England. Do you really want that? Neil Hamilton’s amendment on getting rid of devolution: 2 for, 2 abstain, 49 against. Same for Gareth Bennet’s amendment saying essentially the same thing. The motion didn’t pass tonight but it’s nowhere near the end of it. Welsh labour are the real thorn Labour’s amendment — Senedd “believes that Wales’s interests are best served by its continuing membership of a reformed United Kingdom” — sails through as expected. Remember those Pembrokeshire farmers who will get shafted by Brexit? They won’t be voting lab or con at the next Senedd elections. [Post edited 15 Jul 2020 20:32]

Who will they vote for? It certainly won't be plaid cymru they don't speak Welsh in most of pembrokeshire. As if welsh Assembly members are going to vote to make themselves redundant.

So there we have it..Welsh Labour and Welsh Cons do not believe the people of Wales should choose their own future. They want to leave that to Westminster. Whatever your politics, you should be ashamed of this. Politics is for the people. Was amusing seeing the truly odious Andrew T Davies bumping his gums about the Indy rebels is Welsh Labour. The cons are truly terrified of us. Annibyniaeth

Plaid is for every welsh person. The language divide ended in about 1969. No matter your language, your gender, your race, your religion, your job - Plaid Cymru offers a modern, inclusive, progressive and positive choice for all who call themselves welsh. Already at a record 30% support for Indy, then clearly the Brexit disaster will inevitably create an Indy majority. If you look at the vote to create the Welsh Govt then around 49% did not want the move to a Welsh political structure. Now thats reduced to around only 20 per cent. Thats going to go further down given how comprehensively Drakeford has outperformed Johnson on Covid. Annibyniaeth.

Tell you what though Kilks The amount of people that confuse Welsh Labour and the Senedd is quite baffling. The Senedd hasn't failed, Welsh Labour have at times but have been consistently in power for over 20 years. Yet Haven’t seen a single anti-Tory campaign demanding the Houses of Parliament be abolished because they’ve failed Britain for 20 years.

That is why plaid never get a majority in any election. The Welsh people know what an inclusive, progressive and modern party REALLY means.

The support for Indy is greater in Wales right now than it was at the same point in Scotlands quest to become independent. It will grow even further over the coming months and especially after Brexit. It will be hard in the valleys to grasp control away from Labour but seats like Pembrokeshire and Ynys Mon will have to be fought for, especially since Crosby's latest embarrassment.

The Senedd is not the issue, it's the Unionists inside that are failing us.

You say Welsh people should have the right to decide their own future but inyour world that doesn't include the right to decide if we want to keep or abolish the Senedd and give the powers back to Westminster? Another one who thinks it's only democracy if it's providing what he wants. The latest polls still show more people support abolishing devolution than support an indy vote so I'll say it again, have the debate, have the vote but give us all the choices, give us the indy option and give us the reverse devo option. Then we'll truly see who wants what.

Then by that logic let us have a second Brexit vote then? No, I thought not. I would not want one now either, it is done. It is the same token - you should not reverse something that has been democratically elected in place. You win some and lose some not always getting what you voted for, that is democracy. It is Welsh labour that has failed us not devolution, you have a chance to vote them out next year. What you are forgetting is that more people still support the Senedd than those who oppose it. The people who oppose it are the same clowns who probably support a no-deal brexit - headline gobblers, poorly informed and educated. Glad to see that nonsense was defeated by a massive margin with only 2 voting for it, that is why you will never see that on a ballot paper.

You can have another vote on rejoining the EU, in 20 years. I thought remainers said democracy included the right to change your mind? Obviously unless that change of mind goes against what some people want, especially when they are the minority. As Felix said, we won't get a vote on reversing devo because the Senedd members won't take a chance on losing their well paid jobs. If you shouldn't reverse something that was democratically elected we would only ever have had one vote for anything. Democracy is about having the choice. PS, I will accept that you shouldn't reverse a democratic decision before it has even been implemented, down that road chaos awaits.

The lines have been drawn now and we can see which party's are toeing the unionist rhetoric. A lot of indy supporting Labour voters will jump ship to Plaid or even Mcavoy's party at the next Senedd elections which could be vital in securing Ynys Mon, Pembrokeshire and even a Valley seat.
