The good old days: monkey noises and bananas. 20:56 - Nov 17 with 14436 views | Hadders | https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m00016fp Interesting programme presented by our own Clarke Carlisle about racism in football in the 70s and 80s, with quite a lot about Bob Hazell as well as our charming neighbours in blue. Those too young to remember can take it from me: racial abuse in grounds was loud, constant and vicious. In my case, I'm white, but it disgusted me so much, it put me off going for years.
The good old days: monkey noises and bananas. on 01:31 - Nov 18 with 10622 views | BrianMcCarthy | It was vicious at times. In the late 80's I heard it at Chelsea, Millwall, Liverpool, Everton, other places. Everton were so bad it was hard to actually understand. It was like their fans were a different species to us. If there was a different race, it was them.

will never like everton fans as an entity because of their racism. which is why Devon White punching the ball in the net gave me such unadulterated joy

It was a horrible time, the 70’s were worst, I remember when Chelsea use to come too town, I lived on LR and my parents banned me from going to Chelsea games as a kid, from my room,I could see them walking down LR making the Nazi salute, not a great sight for an 11yr old. Those of a certain vintage remember the scum taking over the ground, quite scary! Everton was one of the worst, one of my best experiences of away supporters In the 70’s was Sunderland, I remember as a boy them coming down and a small group broke off and played football with us. One of the worst racial experience at a football game was about 5 years ago against Millwall, the things I saw that night brought back very unpleasant memories, I would actually say, that’s the worst I have ever personally experienced and that was in 2013/14. My first racial altercation came at SB just after we signed Langley, well I take that back, a black Chelsea fan was involved, lol.

Agreed, I nearly stopped going QPR as a kid, we had no black players and as you pointed out, some of the stuff coming from our own wasn’t pleasant, some of these scum bags are still at LR or their offspring are!

Some may have seemed funny at the time, but in hindsight, they were blatantly wrong. PC has gone mad in some areas, but not this one; it seems to me that we are getting there...

Away at Luton pre season, Kieron Dyer’s debut, I definately heard that sung. 2011 maybe?
The good old days: monkey noises and bananas. on 11:12 - Nov 18 with 10280 views | Monahoop | Strange as it seems, back when I went to Loftus Road regularly in the 70's and 80's, I never heard any derogatory or racialist remarks from fans at least not from R's fans. That's not say there weren't any idiots among us then, but they must have been a tiny minority. Followers of Chelsea, Millwall, Leeds and teams from the wild south west and Wales seemed the worst culprits for this ugly behaviour then and in some cases may be still. Non league grounds especially outside of London, were rife with this kind of nonsense, especially from older fans, who took great pleasure in barracking young black players and reminding them of who was boss back in the 'good old days'. And those old sods always wanted respect from the younger generations because they fought in wars, but their flippant behaviour and attitudes toward others was okay to them? Laughable really in a sick, sad way when I look back at it.

The good old days: monkey noises and bananas. on 12:27 - Nov 18 with 10192 views | BrixtonR | It always winds me up when people go on about how racist Millwall were. As someone who went to Millwall regularly from 83-84 to 87-88 if Rangers weren't playing or I couldn't make an away game. Apart from Luton away (still guttedïŒ) I saw every game in the 84-85 cup run… Scum away a particular highlight 3-2 Fash the bash. The thing is Millwall were possibly less racist than Rangers in those days....I shall come to that. Remember Millwall played near New Cross with a large black population. They probably had one of the highest proportion of black geezers in regard to London clubs who watched them in those days. To be fair maybe them us and Arsenal were the most cosmopolitan then. There top boy T was black and they had a lot of Turkish geezers in their firm. The wannabe racist team in SE London was Charlton with their B-MOB and Zulu song etc. They really were racist. I think because they are a sad trainspotting anorak wearing, joke wrong un club they adopted racism to compensate for their inferiority complex to Millwall. The funny thing is Rangers used to batter them in those days. Fck Chelsea don't ever forget Charlton biggest crowds in 81-82 and 82-83 were against Terry Venables blue and white army NOT against fkin Chelsea. I’m sure we outnumbered the wrong un cnts in 82-83 but both times they got properly run across the East terrace (the only thing big about that sad muggy club) Plus according to my Millwall mate who went with a Charlton mate and was in the sparsely populated away terrace in 82-83 (they bought way less than 1,000) Rangers absolutely destroyed them after the game with sticks hammers and baseball bats. To re-establish there somewhat diminished manhood the BMob had to abuse and racially abuse 14 year olds on the train from Charing Cross and then rob a shop in Blackheath — probably the Childrens section of Pares Footware. Oh and Charlton used to call Rangers firm the Black brigade to get back on topic. Anyway it makes me laugh when Rangers fans say there was no racism at Rangers the biggest loudest song at the semi final (apart from 'who the fckin hell are you to the scruffy fat ugly WBA mugs) was ‘Whose that up a tree its Cyrille its Cyrille’ By the way I’m not saying our fanbase was racist, people just said racist things its just how it was. Both Liverpool clubs were really bad and it's maybe forgotten that signing John Barnes was a bit of a statement for the club (a bit like Maurice Johnson at Glasgow Rangers not long after) But TBF to Liverpool at least they did move on - Everton fans seemed to decide that they'd go full out racist in response - "Everton are white" was the chant and I bet they first used it in a derby game. I think signing Bob Hazell was a big step for us.
The good old days: monkey noises and bananas. on 13:13 - Nov 18 with 10112 views | loftboy | Two particular incidents I remember from Rangers, 82 cup final, every time Bob Hazel beat crooks to a ball there was a chant of “ there’s only one kind of Nig**r “ and it wasn’t a minority either, and Everton away circa 1990 when all the inflatables were the rage, someone took an inflatable gorilla to goodison which had a Dennis the menace shirt on it with the number 4 on the back, they then shouted out to Paul Parker in the warm up, waved it at him and turned it round to show him the number, he went from laughing at it to turning his back in disgust, nobody including myself said anything to the fan that had it thus probably making us just as culpable.

I was at West Ham where we lost an FA Cup game and Bob Hazell scored an own goal and got the worst collective racial abuse I’ve ever witnessed from virtually the whole ground bar the Rangers section. Was a rehash of the Cyril Knowles song and must have been crushing for Bob. Did make a real impact being there and for me polarised just how wrong that sort of stuff was.

Nice one fair play spot on lot of respect. That's the thing ain't it mate, with racism or any kind of ism, the only way that it can ever get better is if all of us (White, black whatever) realise it's a load of b**llcks and stop it it organically cos we think its wrong or we know someone who the ism is against realise they are Ok cos we are all human and the same well apart from that CNt Redknapp ;-) Thing is if someone don't give us a chance to make our own mind up but instead batters us over the head to make us change our views it ain't gonna change them just entrench them, and that seems to be the norm nowadays and that don't help no one which is a shame.

I was on the side with my Dad who stopped taking me to away games after that. A close second was at SB whenLangley scored. Went to Leeds away on the train and on the way home a local having digs about the colour of my friend with me. Ugliest thing I’ve witnessed. Steve just said he was a bit used to it. We were literally just sitting on the train at Leeds station on our way home. The day we lost 6-1.

An honest thread, I lived through all of those things, Rangers had an understated problem for sure! The signing of Hazel was indeed a turning point, Paul Parker, Danny Maddix and Andy Gray helped. Those newspapers headlines also highlight the problems the media cause in the country! I applaud this thread, respect!
The good old days: monkey noises and bananas. on 17:39 - Nov 18 with 9796 views | MrSheen | I only started going to games regularly about 1979, but the only large-scale racist chanting I can remember from our fans was in the cup run. Bananas thrown at Cyrille Regis at Highbury and people singing “Spurs are on the way to Auschwitz”. I didn’t understand why it had suddenly happened, maybe success had brought a few old timers out of the woodwork. I remember that Hazell own goal at West Ham. Me and my friends were too chicken to go in the away end so we were incognito with the home fans. It seemed like everyone was joining in with the song. And Charlton was a huge old slum of a ground. There was a medieval battle going on on that huge weed covered terrace with small bands charging each other waving lumps of wood while the game continued. Plenty of aging skinheads selling National Front News outside. Memorable day out
