As effective as the narrow formations can be... 09:11 - Sep 17 with 5131 viewsGaz_M

I'm sure I'm not the only one hankering back to the days of 4231/433 and playing with width.

I do feel however, that Paul Clements has been dealt a tough deal. Evidence would suggest he's very much a 433 man, so I don't think the switch to the narrow formations is done out of choice, but out of being left high and dry by the transfers window and not having any wingers (of a reasonable standard) to call on. So I'm hopeful that it's enforced decision that we'll see the end of come January.

I think it will be safety first until we are past the 40 point Mark.
More of the same, especially away seems on the cards.

We made effective use of the counter last season with the same flank players, so I don't think it's purely a personnel issue. Seems that we're working on a tactical setup that hasn't quite fully clicked going forward yet.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

If people enjoy that style of football then great. Can't say I'm a huge fan. Paul has has two transfer windows to bring in some pace and creativity so I guess what we have is his creation.

I think the loss of Siggy and Llorente has played a major part in our change of style. Pointless using the flanks and banging crosses in when there is no one there to head them in. Or a set piece specialist to deliver from the dead ball.
We now are going down the centre and do not have a forward capable of winning the long balls pumped out of defence. Hence we have to defend infenitum.
I hope our midfield can come good and Wilf becomes the excellent target man he was during his first spell with us.
Otherwise it will be more of the fare served up yesterday. 27% possession no sign of the Swansea Way.
This is not a criticism of the team and Clem btw. I think it is necessary given the circumstances. The blame lies elsewhere.....

Abraham is six foot four. He should be able to win the occasional cross, even if not as many as Llorente. We're going down the centre because we're choosing to. It'll probably work better when Wilf is fully up to speed.

Don't quite agree.

The first window was pretty much cut and dried before he arrived and this one Abraham and Sanches are definitely down to him.

However as for the rest - what he asked for and who he got (or didn't get) may not necessarily be the same.

Last season he found an attacking set up out of what he had, it wasn't pretty but it kept us up.

This season the transfer window does not appear to have solved the lack of a creative midfielder/winger and our defensive midfield signing is on the bench. That means he is having to try out formations in midfield.

We just have to wait and see how this develops.

We have Ki to come back as well and based on Clement's quotes about him it will be interesting to see what position he plays.

I agree with the last bit about Wilf but I don't think Tammy is a target man. His game is on the deck. His goals for Bristol City showed that he is a poacher finishing off low balls into the box.
Yesterday all Fabs did was bang the ball up field to him and he lost virtually every ball. When he did get it under control he was surrounded by Spurs defenders and his pocket was picked.
Back they came and we were under the cosh again. The defence had to work considerably harder than Chico, Ash and Co ever had to when we used the possession game as a defence mechanism before pulling the trigger and giving them something to worry about the other end.
I repeat I am not criticising the team and management here. It is necessary and I am prepared for ugly football if it keeps us in this league. I jut hope it will be short, or medium term, at most and we can get back to our former glories.

Agree. When Bony is up to match fitness I expect/hope Abraham to be playing off him.

However just shows how few realistic options we have up front.
