Seen a few music threads on here so thought I'd go for it. Been listening to loads of music the last few months kicked off by being asked what my top 20 albums of all time are. I thought a more interesting list of albums is albums that define a point in time of your life. Top 20 can be impersonal as I think people tend to pick albums to make themselves look cool. Anyway, warts and all mine would be something like:
Lou Reed - Transformer Ian Dury - Do it Yourself (deluxe edition)
First 2 are from the car with my old man, if I was including compilations it would probably be different.
Blink 182 - Take of Your Pants and Jacket Papa Roach - Infest Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory
Standard albums from my early teenage years a cringy time looking back but very nostalgic listening to them now.
Muse - Origin of Symetry
Really important album, around the time I started playing guitar, if you were in a band you wanted to play songs from this album.
The 2 most important albums from the 2 most important artists from my delving into classic rock, influenced by the guitar.
The Darkness - Permission to Land The Datsuns - The Datsuns Wolfmother - Wolfmother Jet - Get Born
Current (at the time) albums that got a lot of play time. These 4 and the 2 above I would play along on the guitar start to finish at least once a week back in the day. The Darkness one is embarrassing looking back but fun to play on the guitar and a funny album.
Death From Above 1979 - You're a Woman I'm a Machine
Beast of an album, pretty much the reason I re-stringed my brothers old bass right handed.
Arctitc Monkeys - Whatever People Say I am Thats What I'm not
Perfect album at the perfect time for me, completely related to the songs like nothing I'd listened to before, think I'm pretty much the same age as Alex Turner.
Louis XIV - The Best Little Secrets are Kept (UK version)
No idea how this band weren't better known, this is easily one of my favorite albums ever, and it felt like my own personal album as I never met anyone else who knew it unless I showed it to them.
Audio Bullies - Ego War
Awesome album, really takes me back to a specific period, different to everything so far, it was a time when I was discovering electronic music. A mate from that time would listen to these guys almost exclusively for a time. Defo a big album from back in the day.
Justice - Cross Digitalism - Idealism
In the same vein as above but by 2007 I was in full electronic music mode and the guitar was gathering dust. Cross was for me was what I assume Daft Punk - Discovery was for the generation before. That and idealism were the albums on in the car on the way to parties.
Miami Horror - Illumination Cut Copy - In Ghost Colours
Blank space for albums for uni as I was pretty much just listening to singles/eps I would find on blogs. The two above are albums from that time that were usually on in the car on the drive back from Swansea to Pembs.
That's it, in a more or less chronological order. Disclaimer: that's defo not my list of 20 best albums or anything, probably only Lou Reed, Muse, Led Zepplin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Wolfmother, Arctitc Monkeys, Justice would be in that conversation.
Be interested to see others lists. On a real hunt for music at the moment.
The Autumn Stone - Small Faces : Mothers choice album, earliest musical memories as my parents cleaned
#1 Record — Big Star : Fathers choice, well thius and Elvis, and he bores the tits off me
Greatest Rock n Roll Swindle - The Sex Pistols : Around my cousins house playing Sport of Kings on the c64.
Hysteria — Def Leppard : Starting to get my own taste as I grew older, did have an enjoyment of soft rock, and still do for the nostalgic value.
London 0 Hull 4 - The Housemartins: One of the better songwriters to come from the UK is Mr Heaton.
Pornograffitti - Extreme: Just an album that still brings a smile to my aging lips.
Never Loved Elvis — The Wonder Stuff - First band I went to see with friends - well brothers mates, and loved all the songs from this.
Rage Against The Machine — Rage Against The Machine: Angry fat kid with long hair in a town that I hated, inspired m to start playing bass.
Gold Against the Soul — Manic Street Preachers: Exceptional album, favourite of their stuff, although Generation Terroorists was close, as is the Holy Bible
Pablo Honey - Radiohead: Started as a rock band and ended pretentious
Bwyd Time — Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci: Good with a lot of weed, also a top live band
And Out Come the Wolves - Rancid - Cracking band
Famous Monsters — Misfits : Love these, and Saturday Night is one of my all time favourite songs.
The Big Three — 60ft Dolls : Heavy Small Faces influence and a band that I felt never got the recognition
A Maximum High — Shed Seven : Love this album, not a bead song for me on iit
Different Class — Pulp : As mentioned prior, a very under rated songsmith, lyrics are fantastic and sinister.
Audioweb - Audioweb: Another band that are a bit of a fusion of styles, with a vocalist with a range of voices/styles.
Highlights in Slow Motion — Richard J Parfit: Ex 60ft Dolls frontman acoustic album, if you like chilled acoustic stuff, nothing fancy, then a good listen.
Live From Mars — Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals: A live concert album that has been the most played jn my collection. I highly recommend this album, and the band, fantastic musicians throughout and a lot of different sounds in their repertoire.
White Lie for Dark Times — Relentless 7: Ben Harper's other band. and the last album I physically bought.

Sorry if bored you lot.
Some good ones in there and some I've never heard of.
Madness - very young when these first came out loved the videos to most of their hits, always made me realise music could be fun.
Depeche Mode - first heard them and thought this is different!! again at a young age. Speak and spell is of its time, as I got older they changed and Violator contained Enjoy the silence, which I feel is one of the best songs they do live. Songs of faith and devotion contains walking in my shoes, in your room, higher love and I feel you. I was older and beginning to listen more to music and the lyrics seemed to resonate.
I do listen to albums from time to time and can remember where I was and how's was feeling.
u2 I got into quite late, I thought Sunday bloody Sunday was magnificent live, I never really buy into the politics of many bands, it's just sheer performance that I relate to.
I suppose I played sport and as I got disillusioned by it I looked at performers and wondered what motivated them.
Rage Against the machine and House of pain were soundtracks to my gym years. They sure as hell got you going. I also found early 90's dance music helpful. Then the chill out music like groove armada got me relaxed.
Of late I really enjoy Broken Bells, Years and Years I think they are mixes of a lot of early music I liked maybe a blend of deep lyrics with familiar early sounds I enjoyed. It means something as it reminds me of times past.
The story telling within the songs of Johnny Cash, Kenny rogers even Bruce Springsteen and tom Jones are to be enjoyed. Plus Frank sinatra and Dean martin can cheer up the most dreary soul!
If there is one talent in my lifetime who has died that I'd have loved to have seen in the modern era it would have to be Freddie Mercury. Of all the songs that showcase his talent I think Barcelona is an unusual choice but one that highlights his excellence.
I think music is to be simply enjoyed but it has the ability to soothe and make us reflect. Plus dare I say offer us hope.
