Ferdinand and Terry would have been better than those two at centre back.
And it may well be bias but I don't see how having a few players from a side that are excellent at keeping the ball (something England can never quite get right) could hurt or have done much worse. |  |

a lot of international sides pick teams - with England they only pick the 'BEST' players, and if any manager had the balls to pick players to suit a team, and not the best players, the press, fans etc would explode and demand that say Rooney had to start no matter what.
The fact they pushed Scholes out of the team because Lampard and Gerrard 'HAD' to be picked in the centre says it all.
They should of started with Lambert up top. Gerrard isn't an anchor player (like say Britts is)

I can't understand how Beckham was made out to be a total villain when he always gave his all for whoever he played for.
Yet Rooney, who according to the press and pundits of England is World class, gets no grief whatsoever, yet will never prove himself at International level.
IMHO, Rooney is a good player, bordering on very good. But he never seems to try his hardest for whichever England manager is in charge. Comes across more as a petulant child, especially at Yernited when he's chasing more money. |  |

Depends what the tactics were supposed to be. roy did not do a very good job in my view first problem was not looking past just the top 8 clubs. Ashley cole should have gone considering the lack of experience in the back 4. Problem I have is its easy identifying who should not have gone, smalling, jones, oxlade-chaimberlain (unfit for first 2 games and limited options out wide) lampard, shaw (only because cole should have gone) But none of them got on the pitch. There was no communication in back4 midfield was pedestrian, didn't close men down too slow at moving ball forward and wellbeck and Rooney are not wide players. It's why they are pizzed off at man utd. Captain wasn't a captain on the pitch. Some players grow when they put on an international shirt, too many England players vanish when they put a shirt on. England however always hope they will replicate their club form and its only when they retire after 50-100 caps when that their career at international level is an underachievement. I think that the team underperformed tactically and Roy will get away with it. Forgot to add that there were probably not too many glaring omissions from the squad apart from a coach.
