Saw this in 1991 when it first came out and watched it again a couple of days ago. Great story, especially if you've ever been in a band, wonderful songs and well played too.

It's on iPlayer if you fancy it.

The end of football?
at 07:19 13 Oct 2024

Apocalypse now: City wrangle shows the wealthiest owners could kill football https://www.theguardian.com/football/2024/oct/12/manchester-city-legal-wrangle-p

I like Jonathan Wilson's work a lot and this is a great example of it. Yes, he might be overstating his case a little, but it is to make a very insightful point.

Will we still have football in the future?

A crisis of confidence
at 17:21 5 Oct 2024

Cifuentes now has the difficult job of dealing with a crisis of confidence. Whatever the problems are this season, and there are certainly a good few of them, this team is capable of a midtable finish. But, going into a two week break off the back of three successive defeats, Cifuentes has a big task to bring the players back to some sort of form.

Confidence is so crucial to a good performance. I don't know how Cifuentes will handle this crisis of confidence but unless he does so successfully and manages to get some wins in the next few up coming games, it's only going to get harder.

JCS

Apols if this has been posted elsewhere but does anyone know what the issue is with JCS?

It's rather cynical of me but given the rumours he's about to agree a new contract, I couldn't help wonder if he's done so knowing that with recurrent injury problems clubs are unlikely to come in for him.

Can this team play Marti ball?
at 20:07 21 Sep 2024

As I understand it, Marti wants us to be a positional play side where players stick to a pre-determined formation and patterns of play. It's basically what Guardiola does. My question is: can this team do it?

Today, as with other games, we were slow to build from the back with players often static and seemed almost to wait for something to happen. I wonder if they're so focused on where they are meant to be, particularly playing out from the back, that this slows down our movement and passing. It was noticeable our goal came from a more intuitive move with Cook passing forward, Dembele carrying the ball forward and Frey applying the finish, and all done at speed.

I know this is not 'de rigeuer' but I am wondering if Marti has got this approach wrong.

Sad to read that John Mayall has died, aged 90. An iconic figure of the British blues scene. This was one of the earliest albums I listened to.

Jimmy Dunne

I'm wondering about Dunne's place in the team this coming season. With the signings of Morrison and Santos he has more competition at both CB and RB. That, coupled with Cifuentes style of play not really suiting Dunne's skill set, will he now be mainly played off the bench?

Jimmy was a bit of a hero last season. Will he have the same opportunity this season?

Brian Eno

Just seen the documentary film, Eno. If you like Eno, do try and see it. It's an absolute treat and hugely enjoyable.

The film uses a computer program to select footage and edit the film so that a different version is shown each time it is screened. The New York Times gave an estimate of 52 quintillion possibilities. That's so Brian Eno!

No, not mum, dads, brothers, sisters, etc. The 60s/70s prog rock band. I'm currently listening and re-listening to their '68 album "Music in a Doll's House" and find myself knocked out by it all over again. I was utterly fascinated with this album as a teen in the good old days, particularly when on the wacky.

Is anyone else on here a fan of this stupendous band?

Earworms
at 09:16 1 Jun 2024

With so many music heads on here, I'm wondering if there are some who, like me, have constant earworms; that is songs always playing in their heads?

My current earworm is Midnight Train to Georgia by Gladys Knight and the Pips which I've had for several days. I don't mind too much as it's such a great song.

What's yours at the moment?

Ben Williams

I don't think this is a Spackman but just listened to a very interesting interview with Head of Performance, Ben Williams https://shows.acast.com/the-r-insights-pod/episodes/episode-4-behind-the-scenes-

He's a bit jargonistic but nonetheless clearly knows his stuff. Although he quite rightly declines to go into too much detail on specific players, e.g. JCS, we do learn a fair bit about his approach to player performance.

It feels like there's a triumvirate of Cifuentes, Nourry and Williams who are breathing new life into our club. And very welcome it is too.

Premier League Abuse
at 10:03 23 Apr 2024

I think this article has it about right. Yes, I know if we got promoted to the PL it could, if we dealt with it in the right way, transform our financial position (dream on, you might say). However, as this article suggests, it would be like a short marriage to someone very wealthy but also violent, arrogant and abusive.

https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2024/apr/23/for-sheffield-united-and-c

Would I take the misery of playing in the PL? Yes, for the sake of the club, through gritted teeth and just for a season before returning to the Championship.

Chel*** supporters say club is a ‘laughing stock’
at 18:30 20 Mar 2024

Chelsea are facing more supporter dissent after being warned that a slide towards “irreversible toxicity” in the stands is likely to end in protests against the ownership. In a letter sent to Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali this month, the Chelsea Supporters’ Trust cited concerns about higher ticket prices, the cost of merchandise and travel to games and a lack of communication from the board.

The CST, which said Chelsea had “become a laughing stock on and off the pitch” since being bought by Boehly and Clearlake Capital in 2022, pointed to anger and frustration over a sense that supporters are being used to raise revenue streams.
