Like what I have seem of Bianchini think his first game was against Wycombe, maybe wrong but he seemed as if he wanted to play the game at pace but although he supported by Naughton with some nice interplay it never went anywhere as there no way was Naughton going to go beyond him. Another game he came on or started on the right and looked awful but quickly was moved to the left and did fine. Upfront against QPR he did well, long may it continue. |

And I thought it was some supporting players that were missing leaving him isolated? He is struggling and whether he will be the Championship standard forward we want but have most who have been up top with us of late. |

Bit like When Piroe played at number 10 and Ntcham played right wing neither of them looked good as neither did the running to make space and neither were out and out ball winners, no possession , no ball they both looked awful change of set up ball winners and runners around them, match winners except of course the fact Martin didn't know how to set up his defence effectively. |

Saw Eom doing the closing down like a school boy and I liken Vipotnik chasing down the same, at times it is a pointless exercise as long as we are set up in the back and midfield no long ball shouldn't cause us too much trouble, the point of it is to catch the opposition in possession or force poor passes if we are not ready and in position as a team it is an energy wasting, waste of time in most cases unless it allows us time to get into an effective defensive shape. |
| Forum Reply | What value Cullen ? at 17:50 28 Dec 2024
My bad, not ready to write the likes of Vipotnik off as needed as a squad player sometimes you need horses for courses. As for pace think Franco is quite quick off the mark so can recover lost balls in tight midfield situations, his tenacity helps. Bianchini is now the preferred choice especially if we play a more technical game but Vipotnik may have his uses, Quite like some of Pearl-Harris' game but do we need him now or need to develop him for others? |

Now playing the role that Cooper has on the left but a far better finisher, that is not having a go at Cooper because he had to adapt that role to cover and allow Mannings runs forward. |

Do you get the six points at home and send a patched up team to Portsmouth? As with any away game to you need to be set up properly defensively to recieve the expected attacking game from the home team which can make them vulnerable to counter sttack. By properly set up I don't mean dropping into a back five as we did against Hull, Cardiff second half and Wycombe which mutated into a back three as the fullbacks tried to push up, giving away the middle of midfield while leaving opposition wingers the chance to counter attack, as we have seen against teams like Leeds and Sunderland after going ahead in both games. The midfield has to be won not given away. |

I would question that comment, as I did with regards to Cullen's defensive positioning against Hull in the altered team but would happy to see if it works again against Luton. We have seen this season "one size does not fit all" the difference in performances between first and second half games, game control which swings from one team to another indicating the inability to manage games properly. Until I see that game management applied against the better teams I'm not convinced, obviously the improvement since last seasons drubbing against the top teams is ten fold but conceding the number of goals is not good defending. Scoring as many goals as Spurs is no good if we concede as many as they did against Liverpool. |

Have to agree excellent first half, and the second half was all about not letting QPR back in the game. How many times have we been down on the concourse at half time talking about how well we played but as the season has progressed had to question whether we can hold onto the three points or even the one, seeing tight games out has been an issue, more so at home with a number of capitulations, as we have seen games away were we have let us be overrun early in games by so called bad team.but have been able to overturn against Hull we did have a little revival but could get back into the game . Team selection for Sundays game do we pick the same starting line up and try and get the game in the bag early, while still keeping ourselves tight in defence and then as early as possible make the substitutions needed to give players a rest. If you think about our substitutions against QPR we brought the big boys and by that I mean taller players, Abdulai, Pearl-Harris and Fulton to assist in the expected tactic employed by desperate team of getting the ball into the box anyway they can and hope to have success with an aerial advantage. Did want to mention a couple of games against PNE both where we went in up at half time. This season we controlled the game getting a Pen in the first half which Grimes but we didn't really press home our advantage until the second half where both Abdulai and Vipotnik scored allowing us to run out comfortable 3-0 winners similar to the QPR game getting the game management right, we were as a team at that phase of the season very tight in defence. The second PNE game was the one while under Martin where he played Manning in a front three , Allen in the middle and Cullen on the right wing if my memory is correct the game was won 3-0 by half time Martin reverted Manning to fullback, Allen ran out of puff in the middle and Grimes dropped deep, the attempt at game management didn't really work at they almost got back in the game it end 3-2., really think against Hull and other teams our game management has been poor making it hard for ourselves. Against QPR we got it right. |

Just because you can play a long ball doesn't mean you have to hoof a quick sensible long ball can have lots of positive results although at times a Hoof is definitely required rather than being "brave" youcanbe brave in their half I rather sensible in ours. First time in a long while we have seen a quick release of the ball from Vigouroux hands starting a quick forward move while QPR players were out of position and not blocking the flanks. |

He has got his limitations as do lots of players, he made a couple of mistakes in trying to tidy up the ball in the second half, the mistakes were covered, no problem. I still don't want to see him dropping deep as teams try to put us under pressure and by that I don't mean stop doing the good stuff just not doing the unnecessary stuff when the middle of the park needs to be commanded and his absence from the midfield impacts us. What I really liked yesterday was around the middle of the second half he hadn't dropped back he was right in the middle of the park, not when we we in possession but when they were and trying to progress up the park, the avenue through the middle was for the most part was stopped by him being there with others closing gaps that would have been there if he had dropped too deep. We must remember he is not going to be able to catch up with some of the faster players in the middle so the cover from the likes of Franco is vital in open play or the backs stepping up to cover behind him but that needs our defence in a solid shape. . |

It was good watch Rangel making a descion does he get in tight to get a tackle in to stop a clever footed winger turning and running at him or does he give the winger who solely relies on his pace a yard to make sure Rangel was able to turn and close off the route down the line. Add to that the tenacity and size of a winger the safety of the touch would be the only choice. Problem comes when the winger has a lot of good attributes and the Championship does seem to have them. Rangel did get caught out sometimes trying to add his presence to attacks but team shape should cover that where possible and that is the problem with Tymon and Key they needed to make the right choices with regards to the wingers they are marking and know when to not commit themselves to our attacks, especially if no cover is in place. I don't call them bad players but naive defenders at times yesterday we were three up they needed to ensure QPR didn't get back in the game via their wingers for the most part they got it right in the second half. |

Both Tymon and Key both held their wide defensive position but then tucked into the midfield positions at times which bolstered the defensive element in the midfield while also the attacking threat by adding movement, letting Franco pull out to support Ronnald and cover the flanks, Cabango and Darling would also commit to covering the wings knowing that at least one of Key and Tymon with their pace could directly drop into the middle into the space left to assist Grimes. Presume similar was happening to the left hand side with Cullen but with the right flamk being close to the east stand it was move obvious to me. Second half I think Tymon was targeted again but think he got himself into better defensive positions to ensure the winger didn't have as much time on the ball as in previous games getting closer and making tackles, glad to see the sub they had brought on had to be taken off although the taller player gave Tymon different problems which he dealt with with help from his teammates. What I liked yesterday was Cabango's passes getting quickly to Ronald, Key letting it bypass him but if needed could intercept the ball, it seem to hold the defenders off Ronald giving him options the one time the QPR defender did try and land a strong tackle Ronald the pass and Roanald were too quick drawing the yellow card. I though the interplay was better between Key, Franco and Ronald. Being a bit picky at time both Key and Tymon need to open their bodies out to play the quick balls down the line but the safety first play worked. |

Short turn around is going to affect us but having that 3 goal buffer by the first half really helped us conserve energy levels in the second half also trying to create space with slow ball.is energy sapping especially trying to recover mistakes made. We saw very little of that yesterday. Will be interesting to see Sunday's team, did see Grimes struggle at one point but seem to shake it off, don't know if it was a knock or a pull, suspect a knock |

It was nice to Ronald getting the ball quickly, Cabango excellent passing, Key letting the ball pass him so it didn't slow the passes to Ronald down and then able to offer the support to Ronald add Franco's movement so our attack on the righthand side was great. Nice to see Eom back in full flow as well, excellent preformance all round. Listening to William's comments with regards to the attacking moves being more controlled surprisingly with quicker passing to find the good movement would do that. I think one of the most pleasing aspects was our getting tackles in not letting their players settle on the ball unable to turn with the ball,we did have one or two moments, mistakes but because our defensive shape was better our cover for those mistakes was better. A number of teams have picked us off but with our quicker passing QPR could not did it. Eom taken off because of his yellow or tiring as you would expect after an injury as QPR tried to attack down that side? Thought their fullback was trying to invite a rash challenge from Eom but nice to see Eom hold his ground. Sensible substitutions just the two initially and nice to see Ben Lloyd getting his debut, didn't he play in a couple of the preseason friendlies? |

Good move by Williams? Think he had said enough in the last couple of games and would he only have been repeating himself.Could also be putting the onus on Grimes to have to deal with issues we have seen lately. |
| Forum Reply | Swansea City v Queens Park Rangers : Match day Thread at 22:35 26 Dec 2024
Second half was well controlled, maybe easier being 3 up rather than an edgier 2 nil but we didn't give a lot away because of better cover and better marking and still had a viable attacking threat which also reduce any pressure QPR tried to bring. |
| Forum Reply | Swansea City v Queens Park Rangers : Match day Thread at 20:08 26 Dec 2024
And yet the more or less the same threadbare team goes on to have comfortable win because of better game management. The ball across the backs wasn't interrupted so was a lot quicker going from one side to the other, balls found the wingers constantly in higher positions up the park with players in support to create more chances. How many more balls into the channels were seen today. But for me the most telling was the play to relieve the pressure QPR tried to place on us, so rather constant pressure we were in the right positions to reduce the threats down out wings, fullback in tight on wingers then when able to be released forward with adequate cover behind them. All in all better game management and thus better play. We stopped them for the most part from putting us under prolonged periods of pressure. |
