Agree about players but against Sheffield Wednesday Tymon was having plenty of ball and as a team we seemed untroubled but after 30mins it looked as if William's was berating Tymon telling him he should be further up on the flank, it made him almost redundant didn't get the ballon the front foot and ended up laying the ball back towards our goal, second half it looked as if Delacroix wanted him to come to receive the ball but he wasn't having it as he was doing what he was told to do by the manager.Sheff W just sat back and waited for the mistake.

Simple answer to your first question would be no Swanse Senior league division two would be my highest level with a young team that graduated from Division Five. Played down the field or school since I was a nipper.
Growth spurt as 12 or 13 and learning one or two tricks lead to being captain in the school team and at times the senior team playing in the centre midfield.
Did play 5 aside with work colleagues who played at higher levels.
Basically a bossy boots with little skill but got the ball down
to players who were better than me. Did help I could compete well in the air.

We have seen this season and in previous ones how a game can be flipped on it's head, tactical changes, individual duels won and lost, set piece problems, break away goals or errors or a total loss of shape throughout the team.

I liked how Sheehan's setup and thinking meant the workload was reduced for players all over the pitch.

When the ball was lost, being into a defensive shape as quickly as possible meant Blackburn weren't allowed to play out from the back with us shutting down players paths forward first resulting in their long ball which given Cabango and Darling aerial prescence the midfield and the fullbacks were in good positions to compete.
As you said the worst thing from a midfielder is to constantly drop back deep and sorely affects their ability to get forward, similarly if your forwards cannot compete in the air when you play long balls then the midfield get caught too far forward trying to support them and wingers out to wide are wasted

Our flanks have been targeted so often but it is no surprise if the defender get goal side of a winger in a good position, which they did,.they can work out how to be effective against them they cannot do that if they lose sight of them or give them space in areas where they can use their skills best.
I think we nullified a load of threats all over the park stifling them forcing them to play in a way which allowed us to get on top and stay on top when our quick passing good movement helped us be competitive as a team all over the park but especially down the spine of the team they rarely played through us.
Think a number of managers have tried to accommodate Grimes for his supposed skill with varied degrees of sussess but ultimately have come up short. Whether that is because of the player or the tactics employed by the coach remains to be seen.

I'm sure the team will have some losses under Sheehan tenure but we do seen better suited with the players now available to stand up to pressure trying to be imposed by other teams rather than a team lacking a backbone.

Agree but Sheehan's set up seem to be able to attack with more purpose and also not succumb to the pressure brought by Blackburn. The balance in games swing on odd moments in play, Blackburn had two good chances early in the game but didn't take them but we did reduce those chances by having a mindset to defend the lead gained as opposed to continuingly surrendering silly goalsklike early in games by putting ourselves in dangerous situations at the back or thinking we had got back in games throwing caution to the wind only to concede goals within minutes of a recovering goal losing any advantage gained.
Another game, another team with different problems and tactics to overcome.

Agree but that little bit of quality and pace in the middle of midfield has seemingly solved one of our problems with the "transition in play" to use William's words from attack to defense and vice versa. That problem in midfield created big gaps between the three sections, attack, midfield and defense, add that with the over committing of the defenders forward with no viable cover to stifle counter attacks.
Was nice to see all three sections able to do their initial jobs properly and being able to link the play to keep on top of the game.

My initial response would be give him until the end of the season, he did well last time but we didn't see what his response to the heavy defeat to Southampton as Luke William's took the reigns directly after.
He may have learnt a bit more under William's on the folly of going all out attack after seeing us being picked off by teams by not consolidating what we have, It was nice to see us holding our ground against Blackburn attack both at the start and after we scored the first they tried to put press on us but we set up correctly to withstand their expected responses.
In the past we have seen both Jackett and Cooper spend the last fifteen minutes of games defending points the latter doing it with very little pace up front reducing the option's to relieve pressure, against Blackburn the change of the front three gave us that option.
If fans could see the problems that William's tactics have produced then surely Sheehan is well aware of them the inclusion of O'Brien's quality helps in the middle just as Allen's does but as we know Allen cannot be relied on to stay injury free.

So in answer to the question I would give him the job at least until the end of the season but maybe wait to see his response to a loss.
If he is doing well keep him in the loop with reference to the long term plan to make additions to the squad in key areas to replace those players who may not be here next season, Add a bonus for keeping us up with a view of a contract for future seasons.

Martin and Williams usually didn't tweak the system to fit the players they had both rotated players around the pitch to try and get them to fit the system, it did work every s o often but mostly players found themselves trying to do things totally alien to how they have been use to playing in their proper positions, all for players adapting to situations but Martin's substitutions caused chaos to a new level.

Don't expect to win every game under Sheehan but if forwards are missing chances more often but also scoring then it means we are getting a better supply to them, the problem comes against better organised teams where the number of opportunities are reduced and more telling when teams are clinical at finishing their chances.
Forwards have to read the game and have a good understanding with the players around him so he has a good idea where the ball is going to end up in the box and adapt as necessary their movement often makes th space for the pass into the box or gives the player on the ball the time he needs to be effective. The lack of movement can kill a move stone dead.
One and two touch football when needed yesterday and knowing when or when not to hold onto the ball too long.

If he doesn't like doing the press thing perhaps he could find a Peter Talyor like Brian Clough did to deal with the ⁡media nonsense?

Sheehan for me.
The forwards press was so much better yesterday they got quickly into shape first before then closing Blackburn down properly add to that the midfield have the pace and tenacity to back that press up when needed while using those skills to recover if good play does cause problem, nice to see our issues further up the pitch not in our defensive third.
That change in the forwards press made a big difference meaning Blackburn resorted to the long ball.

Blackburn came to attack and we took advantage of that getting in behind themselves as in QPR game, question is could we deal with the teams that park the bus and try counterattacking enough pace in the middle now.

Sheehan knows the players the players he has at his disposal and doesn't have to spend time trying to see what they can or cannot do, for the most part.
Would a new manager adapt the team as quick.

We saw last year he had a positive affect when he took over, until the Southampton game, we got overrun in that game against a team just relegated from the Premiership with a number of players of quality, our team had a reshuffled back four with Wood's return to fitness over playing at the back which was not seen yesterday but really cost us killing in that game off. Was Sheehan still in charge of that game or was Williams 'in da house' or was the style of play so ingrained it surfaced at the wrong time?

Early to say it but I would give Sheehan a shot at the job at least until the end of the season.
We should never have lost the Stoke or Sheffield Wednesday games with the players at our disposal, with the return of Parker, Cooper, Ginnelly, Eom and the addition of Delacroix and O'Brien adding strength to the first team squad that has been missing but those players may have needed time to settle in or back in, with us fans expecting those players to have immediate impact but players recovering from bad injuries can take time.

For me Sheehan actually adding a bit of height up front with Peart-Harris and Ronald who both caused issues in previous games with both having pace to chase the quickly deliverd long ball and once the ball at their feet can caused defenders one on one problems be it from direct running or well placed passes, I let you work out who does which.

The boost of having O'Brien in the middle has allowed the team shape to work with a back four, the same back four that were mean goal wise earlier in the season.

Sheehan has used things that have worked at times before but was that one of our very few ninety minute games?

Much better all-round, cracking save by Vigouroux in the first half, we could have been one nil down or one up before our first goal.Chances missed and shots going awry but a lot more of both including those on target.
No centreforward wasting his energy needlessly trying to close down three players and the goalie by himself. All back into shape quickly to apply the press properly.
Wingers and fullbacks having options in the middle, what was also nice to see the ball being held up at times to allow players to be able to get forward to support the front players not allowing them to be isolated killing forward motion.

at 08:24 22 Feb 2025

He did alright the last time until we came up against Martin's Southampton, struggled in the first half but only one nil down still in the game, Wood and Rushworth comedy show at the start of the second two nil down no way back.
After not getting the job last time maybe he wouldn't want to seen to be snubbed again for the managers job so giving the impression he doesn't want the job in public or he has seen events unfold and doesn't want the job.

where and why has it gone wrong?
at 08:58 16 Feb 2025

Ronald has been surprisingly good at fullback he gets a foot in, gets closer to wingers not allowing them the acres of space, hasn't struggled under the high ball as much as others in the fullback position, he does get caught by wingers skilled footwork being a bit naive but we have struggled to stifle attacks on the wings almost all season both Key and Tymon have given opposition wingers time and space similar to last season and beyond to Martin's reign playing 5 at the back that still hasn't changed.

Would we be better off if Key played in front of Ronald similar to Coopers reign with four at the back as he has a slightly better ball control when running at players similar to Parker and are both quicker off the mark.

The goals yesterday came from set plays, one a very rash challenge by Cabango at one of the few times the winger got passed Ronald not through foot work, he got outnumbered maybe he did try chasing the ball a bit but the cover wasn't close enough hence the rash challenge, the second goal was the result of Francos intial mistimed challenge out wide being beaten by the winger, Ronald got back to cover and it was debatable about who gave the freekick away Franco chasing back making a challenge from the wrong side or Ronald tracking back trying sensibly to get between the winger and the ball?
Either way both set pieces badly defended as have number of our set plays in defence and similaly in attack have been executed. Maybe through lack of height in defences and attack.

The selection up front was a bit stupid, Ollie Cooper selected for his work rates and sensible ability to cover, Eom for his work rate and movement off the ball and Cullenfor a possible goal threat and workrate but neither of those three are going to threaten in the air and yet we persist in high crosses looked much better with whipped in low crosses.

The midfield duo picks its self Franco and O'Brien and in both the Stoke and Sheffield Wed games we kepted it tight in defence in the first half and early into the second half although not setting the world on fire we had a point in our grasp in both games against Sheff Wed our substitutions didn't work and against Stoke theirs did but both substitutions were made around the 60min mark, In both case we left ourselves exposed defensively surely if substitutions are made you make sure you get into a good defensive shape to see how the substitutions affects the game instead of giving no regard to how substitutions affect our defensive shape and the opposition attacking shape.

At the moment I would go for 4-4-2 in attacking mode and 4-5-1 in defensive mode.

Ronald, Cabango, Darling and Delcroix(at left back) which gives us some height in the team.
Key, Franco, O'Brien, Tymon in the midfield both wide players tucking in and defending as necessary attacking again as necessary.
As for the top two someone who can compete aerially, has pace, defend in the midfield when needed and can score goals, none of Vipotnik, Eom, Cooper, Bianchini Pearl-Harris or Cullen possess all of those qualities so perm and two from six to find the right combinations. Ginnelly?

As we have had a number of changes since the transfer window, new players in, injured players coming back, a player banned we cannot go chasing games, losing points in the bag especially trying to go all out attack leaving ourselves exposed when we are ahead in games. Bad game management.

100% agreed school boy error similar to Vigouroux last minute error against Millwall players trying to force the play to gain an advantage but doing with no cover for individual
errors, why did Darling try the exact same pass straight after they had scored where they again we should have conceded. Mistakes made in dangerous areas of the pitch because our tactics meant we again struggled to get up the pitch but different tactics employed against Bristol after their initial onslaught.
Picked off as we have been against Millwall and multiple times this season because we didn't employ the right tactics to break down a stubborn defensive setup.

Time for a change me thinks.
William's tried to change things during the first half but it didn't work, Second half continued with the idea that didn't work at the end of the first half and even though it didn't work he persisted with his flawed idea but to cap it all it is the same idea that didn't work before and didn't work for his mentor. Thought he had to have time to get used to his players and championship footie last season but by now he should be aware of his squad capabilities and pick his players and style of play to suit.

I would say a 5 is harsh, in the away game he could affect our style of play, yesterday in the first part of the game we did play differently but William's forced that touchline hugging shape upon us that even O"Brien couldn't shift us from, leaving us pedestrian like to say the very least.

Free flowing through the middle gone Sheff Wed just waited for us to make the mistakes.

Very reminiscent of Wood last year coming back from injury where in his first got back just after half time his stupid pass was from the corner flag to the goalie Rushworth who under press mistimed his clearance leading to Martin's Southampton going 2-0 up killing the game off that was under Sheenhan's tenure and last game in charge but the Martin indoctrination of "the play must pass the ball to feet at all cost" remained in Wood's head, it is killing us leading to us being picked off, stupid passes in stupid areas of the pitch leaving us with no cover for those mistakes.

Stupid as is constantly pulling players out wide all the time to make the touchline look like a queue for a bus while leaving the chance to progress through the middle of the pitch redundant and up up the flank easy to defend.

Why do we persist in trying to play three or four supposedly clever short little passes among the two or three players who have fought hard to get back possession instead of then getting the ball out of the less crowded part of the pitch, stupid win the ball get it out of the congested area quickly to take advantage of space left in other areas of the pitch to allow us to get forward without a swarm of opposition players around us.

We caused Sheff Wed some problems with get Vipotnik when he had runners off him but we stopped doing it in the pursuit of playing down the wings putting crosses into to the box with no-one in there because half the forward midfielders have been on the wings to stand in he bus stop.

Williams changed things in that first half to a rigid format that the opposition covered easier we then tried to force the issue by giving stupid passes. Again.

I thought I saw William's change thing at some point in the first half, we weren't playing that bad but he changed it. It looked as if he was having a go a Tymon telling him to push up high and wide rather than what was working to a degree which was starting receiving from deep full back position with midfielders in front of him who he could make runs off enabling him to come onto the ball with ay that could get us up the park in numbers William issued his instructions Tymon to stay up high and hug the touchline it meant we then tried to progress the ball solely down the flank to poor effect.
In the second half at a stoppage in play it seemed as if Delacroix was asking Tymon to come short but Tymon seemed adamant that hugging the touch line high up the pitch was what he was asked to do which I presumed was happening give the hand gestures by the both players.
A change of tactic that failed but it is a tactic that has been shown to be folly so often, lack of movement filling the wings expecting them to produce something from a static start.
Game we didn't deserve to win but a game they really didn't really do enough to win the game without the gift we shared

Nice to hear in the Indy report that Joel Cotterill is glad he is getting valuable game time under his belt and thinks he is progressing under Ian Hollloway just needs to be reassured that his future is in the Swansea squad next season not think he will be wasted here and longs to be back with Swindon next season, man management?
Full game last Saturday and he scored from the edge of the box.
