Putting together a really strong squad, they've just signed Gary Roberts from Swindon.

Agreed I fancy them for the title

They do appear to be spending quite a sum of money to get promoted....I'm sure it'll work out.

Life is a game of fate.

Very cynical considering they have a new ground no debts and a large following

Was reading on The Football Forum that there are debts there. Will try and find the thread later.

I don't think they're buryesque. Now being cynical about Pompey is fair enough

They have a shiny new ground, oh then they must surely be able to afford it then.

New ground generally equals a few more through the gates. I remember reading an article about Chesterfield the season after they first opened the B2Net, about how attendance figures had shot up by about a third. Might have been in FourFourTwo.

The other teams at our level that have built new grounds recently have had success also - Shrewsbury & Rotherham for example. I know Chesterfield have had a relegation since opening their new ground but still something to think about. Not in a "WE SHOULD BUILD A NEW GROUND" way, but in a, "a new ground generally can improve a club."

(I'd hate for us to build a new ground before people get on my back about that.)

Your posts on this thread has probably guaranteed promotion for Chesterfield, followed by the inevitable OD quote of "I told you they were good".

It's not just the increased numbers through the gate. Shrewsbury, Rotherham and Chesterfield built their facilities with the specific intention of running a successful commercial business using facilities at the ground 365 days a year.

In fact the guy that invested in Chesterfield's ground (Sheffield weds ex chairman) has a background in corporate events, catering etc. and was courted over c.15 years specifically to come and build a commercial business.

On top of this you have the increased matchday revenue from catering etc. For example, I believe both Rotherham and chesterfield have sold out their VIP lounges for every league game played at the new grounds since their inception.

All three of these clubs have focused on increasing customer spend on the day too, for example, opening the councurses early so fans can come and watch the early sky kick off on screens under the stand whilst spending money on booze etc.

A bit of digging into company accounts revealed chesterfield turned a small profit last year at the same time as making loan repayments to their chairman for the part of the ground that was funded by a loan from him. Reportedly they have a similar wage budget this year to last so hardly sounds like they are over spending...

£7m debt mentioned in link below, but as the Chesterfield fans there and others on here have said, their business model off the pitch is working well.

Some fantastic mentalness as Mansfield talked about in that thread too.

Same here.

The season starts at least a fortnight too early for my liking, but I've got huge faith in Hilly's team-building abilities.

Fook Me!!!

They talk about having a 3 to 4 million pound debt as though it was chicken feed!

I can imagine our board fretting about a £150K debt.

We probably dont realise how lucky we are!
