Match thread....Boston United (away) New Era 10:49 - Aug 10 with 19894 viewsYorkshire_Dale

Let's be novel and have a Match thread! It might start a bit more conversation on here in line with the New Era and get some new posters in the debate.

Good Luck everyone and let's get off to a good start.

I always look forward to a new season with fresh hopes and aspirations and to see new faces within the squad.
For me this season is a fresh start after what as happened the past few years and it will also be good test for the manager aswell as I see this as his first proper season...
Im hoping that Dale get the season going with three points....

Whatever the result, we shouldn't get too hung up (or go overboard with enthusiasm) after one game

A good start would be great of course, but the performance will matter just as much

Perfect away performance and start to the season. They’re a poor side but did exactly what we had to do and controlled the game beautifully.
Look to have some serious footballers in this squad; Beckwith and Henry really impressed me, as did Burger when he came on.
Good to have lots of strong options to bring off the bench, with Barlow and Senior not even in the squad.
Long, long way to go but a brilliant start.

For the first time in about 4 to 5 years that was great to listen to as an exile (Boston is even further than Spotland).

Always found the commentators on the Dale feed honest about games and their summary at half time and at the end gave me some hope of a good season with decent football.

I know we'll lose games but at lest it sounded more entertaining than the last few years

Set off about half seven this morning and was on the train to London at 07:55 on the way a friend text me mentioning the disruption out of Kings Cross, contemplated aborting but decided to push on. Very helpful chap at KGX advised me to go via Nottingham from St Pancras. So I loaded up with cans and snacks and headed across the road to catch suggested train. Guard didn't charge the weekend upgrade fee for sitting in first class so that was a result. Got to Nottingham and joined the queue for the Skegness train. Train wasn't too busy and got a seat another result. Got to Boston about 20 past 2 met some mates from Rochdale in The Eagle pub near the station and had a pint. Landlady sorted us a Taxi got the ground couple few minutes after kick off. Sensible steward dealt with a ticketing issue and we made it into the ground, just in time to see Rodney's first of his brace. Pleased I persevered with the trains and made the game. Made it back to Ringmer for a pint in my local before last orders. Tiring but all in all a good day

We set up as we had done in the two previous home friendlies. Rodney and Mitchell closer together up top, McBride coming in off the right with Henry and Gilmour across the middle. Allarakia played higher up the left flank and TAR, while getting forward, was expected to drop into right back when Boston were in possession, forcing the three centre backs of Gordon, EEL and Beckwith along one.

It was clear at the start that Boston were happy to stand off our centre backs around our own area and press once they advanced towards the half way line or played the out-ball to the flanks. This encouraged us to play some overhit long balls in the early stages, which was a little frustrating. However, once Gilmour threaded the ball through the middle for Rodney, who was wide awake, rounded the keeper and slotted home, Boston knew they had another vulnerability they needed to focus on.

In terms of our own vulnerability in the first half, the only joy Boston got was in the pocket on the left that was vacated by Allarakia getting forward and Beckwith needing to get across to cover. They managed a couple of dangerous crosses from there and cost Beckwith a booking having to bring a man down. The only other issue was the playing across the back which saw EEL have a ball charged down that mercifully went out of play. To be fair, Boston offered little more than a few wayward strokes towards goal or tame efforts easily held by McNicholas.

However, as the half wore on we ourselves were much, much better. Allarakia got two lovely balls across goal that deserved someone on the end of them, and TAR was creating some lovely one-twos on the other side.

Rodney produced another sublime finish after EEL played him in following Boston failing to clear a corner.

Second half was much better from us. We should’ve scored two more before Henderson sealed it. We used the substitutes well to kill the game and managed it out expertly as Boston looked tired and bereft of ideas. Take note when other teams do this to us!

All-in-all, a good day’s work to open the season but we will face tougher opposition this season for an absolute certainty.

Thanks for that, didn’t see the game and welcome the report.

Noticed that we used all five subs individually (apparently in the NL this is the rule, not ‘five in three stoppages’), so let’s not all chuck our toys when other teams do it when winning 1-0 at Spotland!
