Return of Wild Thing, desperate nostalgia play or just the tonic? Column on 07:52 - Feb 24 with 1846 views | Phildo | Simmos post absolutely nails it for me. I had this nagging feeling for a while we were trying to do what worked for someone else 4/5 years ago for a while and that maybe it was not possible to repeat the trick at the current time. Covid changed the world in so many ways. Lets find a new way to do this. We are all down but not out. Clubs rise and fall all the time and what seems a lost cause can be back better than ever a few years later. For now they may have had an obituary on file but the patient is not dead yet and Doctor Ainsworth is on the case.

Yep Simmo couldn't have put it better. The Brentford thing is an odd one, because they're down the road from us was there an element of jealousy and we felt we really had to emulate them? Would we have been quite as bothered if it was a random northern team doing the same things? As Simmo states and Weezer once put it, the world has turned and left us here.

Return of Wild Thing, desperate nostalgia play or just the tonic? Column on 10:41 - Feb 24 with 1548 views | ChrisNW6 | Yep, Simmo has nailed this one 👌 I remember the football under Warnock was painful to watch at times as we got used to winning 1-0 with odd glimpses of brilliance from the magician. That would be my blueprint for a solid Championship side.
Return of Wild Thing, desperate nostalgia play or just the tonic? Column on 10:46 - Feb 24 with 1528 views | PunteR | Simmo is right of course but let's not detract away from the reason we've changed course. This isn't some premeditated plan. We fked up massively and this is really the only option at this stage. If this goes well, and I really hope it does I won't be throwing all the plaudits the DoF's way just yet. We still need to recruit well and within budget. We still need to build a squad "of men". (Yeh thats right, McClaren called it years ago). I'm still very wary of the club getting this right. Don't get me wrong im absolutely delighted Ainsworth is here and he has my full support but we're not out of the woods yet.

Return of Wild Thing, desperate nostalgia play or just the tonic? Column on 10:54 - Feb 24 with 1498 views | toboboly | I was always going to go on saturday, but a significant part of me was trying to suggest it would be far more fun to head elsewhere and tick off a new non-league ground. Now, however, i cant wait to head to LR. If only to say thank you to Ainsworth for making this week so much better than the last 4 months have been. Frankly, if the players dont respond now they should be killed to death as the half time entertainment.

It may be just me but I feel like the’play out from the back’ era may be coming to an end. With the introduction of the high press we are now seeing keepers from teams like City and Liverpool having passes intercepted and conceding soft goals. Just like tiki taka before it maybe the game is moving on and going longer from the goalie may become more important.

Yep, been banging that drum for a while. We've had maybe five decent seasons since the 96 relegation, the rest has been different shades of shit. Not that we're especially exceptional in that.

Return of Wild Thing, desperate nostalgia play or just the tonic? Column on 09:24 - Feb 22 by HAYESBOY | GA mentions his playing style in the Offy interview. And as many people have assessed, he states that you play to the strengths of the players you have to work with. |
Sounds like Warnock. We all thought he would play hoof ball but just look at what happened ðŸ‘🤣

Return of Wild Thing, desperate nostalgia play or just the tonic? Column on 19:57 - Feb 23 by LordPork | Bottom line is you can whinge and moan about "style of play" all day long, Wrong manager, wrong style of play may be all very well, but I've not heard anyone come on here after we've won and complain about the "style of play" so, lets get it straight, win first, at any price. If that means then "style of play" is sacrificed then so be it. You'll hear plenty of West ham supporters on Talkspout complaining about the West Ham way...the Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst, Martin Peters days. I get the impression there's some here invoking the "QPR way".. I think you'll find in most cases that was some 50 - 60 years ago..... just win, worry about the style of play when we're top of the league.... |
This all day. Everyone reminiscing about when they liked our style of play harks back to a Winning period, quite right too as who remembers a struggling team playing "well" so win first, then worry about detail. The key thing is not really a style in my view it is a state of mind. All pro footballers are good at least and must have been exceptional at some point to get where they are; the difference at this level is CONFIDENCE. So, when a team starts winning, with whatever style they have, they will get confident to try things and that confidence will increase their chance of doing it well and right. Look at Lyndon Dykes as an example. On one of his "runs of form" lots comes off, he plays to his strengths (one touch lay offs) and he looks good. BUT, when that confidence isn't there, he can't control the ball, misses simple chances and has no clue what to do with the ball at his feet. A team full of confidence (a winning one) is good to watch. What I want is uncompromising Centre Backs, an uncompromising central midfielder and an uncompromising centre forward, who do not get bullied, can play "a little" and who can enforce for the team sprinkled with determined, talented, quick "ballers" up top that can excite. Defenders defend, attackers attack and midfielders who do both. When they start winning, we can have a chat about style, but some backbone to play when a bit injured would be a start.
