This is an interesting tweet:

Edit: Peck isn't a teammate, just a supporter. Random club for him to mention though unless he knew something?

It was mentioned that Charman is serving a suspension anybody what for......

He left the changing rooms in a mess at Firgrove.

Poll: Greatest Ever Dale Game

On the decent players we've signed from non-league I'd like to add Perkins. Class player first time round, used incorrectly the second time.

On the suspension it sounds like a ridiculous one https://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/sport/19830145.darlington-lose-luke-charmans-r

There's a picture doing the rounds of Charman on the ground in a headlock and it's Charman who gets sent off for an elbow.

Poll: What are we more excited for?

Whats " ignorant " about it? Is there really any need to be rude because someone disagrees with your analysis?
We were told the money raised from selling players would be invested in the squad, is it not reasonable to imagine that might mean either paying better wages or spending on transfer fees? And wouldnt you prefer we were doing more than just looking at the goals scored column?

Someone posted a very tenuous link to a player no one had heard of or knew very much about and because I made an off-the-cuff comment about getting a scout at Firgrove you decide that somehow thats " ignorant"? I can only presume you had a bad day at work.

IGNORANT.

lacking in knowledge or training; unlearned:
an ignorant man.

lacking knowledge or information as to a particular subject or fact:
ignorant of quantum physics.

uninformed; unaware.

due to or showing lack of knowledge or training:
an ignorant statement.

https://www.dictionary.com/browse/ignorant

–––––

Your post and off-the-cuff comment was ignorant. It’s not rude of me to point that out. Dry your eyes.

You’ve continued that ignorance by assuming we are just looking at the goals scored column. We’d never have signed Beesley if that was the case. What is to say this lad hasn’t always had the ability but was previously lacking the application? You, and I, simply don’t know.

Dale will probably always look to sign players, develop them, and sell them on. It’s the only way we survive at this level without a benefactor. Promises of reinvesting money received in transfer fees into the squad doesn’t change that. That reinvestment could take many forms and may not necessarily come entirely in the January transfer window.

I agree with you on the tenuous link. In the social media age all it takes is one tweet and people have him signing the next day. Suddenly everybody is ITK.

In all fairness, I did point out that the tweet was ‘interesting’ - certainly no claim to be ITK.

It wasn’t aimed at you specifically, just the social media age that we’re in. People read tweets from others and suddenly they ‘know’ what’s going on or what a player is all about.

I’ve seen tweets with people semi-stalking Luke Charman, as though he’s the Second Coming. How many of us could claim to have seen him play? One or two of us at most, you’d imagine. I do get where 49th is coming from in terms of wanting to see an ‘established’ and proven name arrive but I can’t agree simply because firstly, we can’t afford it (not sustainably) and secondly, our scouting system and developmental pathway has a proven record of success and should be afforded a large degree of trust.

What a lot of people also don't consider is that 'established' and 'proven' names probably won't be available.

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

The Charman stuff is driving me nuts.

I hope we do sign Charman, he looks like he’s one of those players who has always had ability but really found themselves after dropping to non league. That’s based on clips of him, stats and press articles. I’ve never seen the lad play either. There will be a lot of interest in him for that reason, from clubs who offer better wages than us, so if he signs it shows he’s got his head screwed on and not purely looking at the highest wage. That’s the sort of player we need, whether he’s dropping down levels or stepping up.

I hope Luke doesn't read his Twitter that often. Otherwise he might think twice about signing for us. Some obsessives on there ATM.

Some of the Charman stuff online (particularly twitter) is downright weird. It seems to be a combination of people desperate to appear 'ITK', desperate to have an 'exclusive' to brag to their online mates, and even more desperate to get him to acknowledge their existence with some
sort of interaction online.

There is a fine line between being keen to get a particular signing in the door and coming across as a stalker. Most of the O'Keeffe stuff I've seen fits into the former, whilst a few people about Charman fit into the latter.

Bit of a naïve viewpoint, but I do wonder if the response / attitude from fans of a prospective club come into the decision making of players / agents who have multiple offers from different clubs.

I hope it doesn’t, every fan base will have its over exuberant kids. I don’t think it helps though.

To be fair, these players are young lads, they might like the Twitter attention or think nothing of it.

Spending on transfer fees is an interesting point. Haven't most of the transfer fees we've spent been on players from non-league? Shaw, Bunney, Williams, Perkins, Dawson, Beesley. Even some of the EFL players we've paid fees for have had barely any EFL experience like Grant and Kitching.

Tangled up in blue.

I suppose signing players from non-league is always a bit of a gamble.
For every Beesley, McEvilly, Newby and Odoh there’s a Shaw, Jack Muldoon, Jordan Williams or Jon Boardman.

Probably a bit unkind on Muldoon who perhaps came to us too early when his record at Harrogate over the past 3/4 years suggests a goal every 3 games or so . If we do bring in another striker from Non-League and he were to produce that sort of scoring rate I for one would think him a good signing

I didnt actually say I wanted an experienced or proven striker, I just said that the "goals for " column shouldnt be the only reason for signing a player from a lower division. I would be looking for pace, stamina, instinct, link up work, defensive abilities, as well as goals to shots ratio.
I do however, think the squad needs some investment in more experienced players, Stockdale seems to think so too. In many ways its a shame that Albie wasnt a couple of years younger or that Henderson left in a huff , you can put a relatively inexperienced player alongside someone like them and they will learn lots, quickly too. Stockdale has said the kids need help so it seems unlikely he will just bring more kids in without someone he can depend on to help and guide them on the pitch, hence the Downing signing at the back. Thats what I have taken from his comments, others have perhaps heard the same words and come to a different conclusion?

No, but you did say "there must be better options available" than Gibson even though you know nothing about his pace, stamina, instinct, link up work, defensive ability or goals to shots ratio.

I recall Stevie Whitehall also going in the nets at Darlington, first game of the season in the early 90s...Think Hodge had suffered concusion.

Any other instances of outfield players going in goal for us?

Then Hodge came back out for the second half!

Paul Williams replaced Chris Clarke after he suffered a horrible head injury at Blackpool in the AWS. Easily Williams’ best game for the club.

Also at Blackpool, David Flitcroft took over in goal after Neil Edwards was sent off when they beat us in a crucial game at the end of the 00/01 season.
