Fitness and energy is what we're missing. Newby and Odoh are great but they only dropped deep to help Dooley and Morley in occasion be and wish we'd seen more of it.
I would have preferred to see Keohane on for Beesley in the first half and put Done up top at least we'd have worked their defenders a bit, then maybe gone with the big lad later on. Cashman didn't do anything when he came on either.
Also think to help Morley and Dooley out maybe we should have played a back 4 and gone with an extra body in midfield.
On Saturday we're still going to be missing the 4 players I believe. Hopefully Beesley will be ok. Think I'd go back to 433 the best we can with what we have.
I do think there is a lack of wanting to win 50/50 challenges in some of the players, we are without a warrior now Rathbone has gone.. (Odoh was great though and won a few headers for a short guy and I liked Andrews) Whether it's to protect themselves from injury or lack of fitness. A bit more bravery and a 'No fear' attitude are needed.

It’s now 2seasons since we had a left back, we got relegated because we didn’t have a left back, Norrington-Davis was immense but for goodness sake 2 bloody seasons without one, give me strength. We’ve signed one on who has played about 10 games in 3 years. Marty Done is not a left back and never has been. Football isn’t difficult just play players who are comfortable in their positions. Robbie two words Left back Left back Left back Left back Ad infinitum, it’s not difficult

The 2nd goal is a non-clearance of the ball by a Dale defender, looks like he's not reacted properly and it comes of his hip into the path of the scorer.

I don't quite see all the hype about Odoh tonight, he was exceptional for the first 30 mins but thereafter faded completely out of the game for me, save for one shot that was saved against the post. Not entirely his fault as the whole team seemed to tire badly in the second half and struggled to retain possession, it goes without saying that conceding so soon after the equaliser really knocked the stuffing out of us. Also we really missed Beesley's non stop harrying and closing down, Andrews did his best but looks some way short of match fitness.
I think we'll be OK, if Forest Green are expected to be promotion chasers this season then there's really nothing to be scared of. It's imperative to get that first win sooner rather than later though as with such an inexperienced team heads could start to drop if results continue to go against us. I would echo others in that a couple of wise old heads in the team would be extremely beneficial but whether the right players are available and there's the necessary budget for them, who knows?

Having watched the highlights turns out both sides hit the post and all 3 goals involved a deflection - fine margins; confirms my feeling last night that we deserved a draw. The injury to their No 22 was the result of a bad landing after contesting a high ball with Andrews.
Beesley works hard, but he will not get us the goals, Andrews and Cashman both have talent, but are raw and inexperienced. It is the same in midfield, our central midfield are young and to some extent inexperienced. I cannot figure out why Keohane is on the bench, rather then at left back or in midfield, is he not fully fit?
Combine this with the inexperience of RS, it is worrying, because he is also learning on the job to some extent. RS admitted the kids are learning on the job and will make mistakes, did he also say that he is looking to had to the squad. However rather then being an experienced or an old head in midfield, I suspect that it will be another inexperienced kid and it is the same up front. If we had Humphreys I suspect we would have got more points by now, and that is what we also need an experienced striker who knows were to position themselves to get the goals. Hopefully we can get in at least two or three experienced players by early next week.

We've signed Aidy White who is isolating due to Covid.
Its a BRILLIANT goal to cap a BRILLIANT start by Rochdale - Don Goodman 26/08/10
Granted, most of those commenting underneath this tweet will be kids but christ, talking of relegation after three games when nearly all of our signings were made in the week leading up to Harrogate is embarrassing. Patience is a virtue supporters need to demonstrate more than ever, right now:

I’d definitely be starting Keohane on the left as soon as he’s fit enough. I do like Done as an attacking outlet though and he got forward well last night and put some decent crosses in, despite being at fault for the first goal. The trouble is our winger/forwards are probably our best players - Newby and Odoh have been our standout players so far, and Cashman is a lively backup.
I’d also be giving the other keeper a start sooner rather than later.

Funny how we all see things differently - agree about Keohane (though O'Keefe also 'disappeared' last night) & Done's / Odoh's attacking potential. Newby for me is still a liability defensively, fails to support the 2 man midfield and is still prone to ineffective sideways dribbles but he's stronger than Cashman who for me is all pose and little product.
Completely disagree with people saying 'the season is over' and 'we should just about be alright', we're 3 games in! We usually start badly, in the 2013/14 promotion we only won 1 of the first 5 games, and that was with a completely new squad as well, then in September we won every game, and we were off. Now, I'm obviously not expecting a repeat of that but we need PATIENCE, a lot of the new signings won't have had a proper pre-season, we have a new manager, pretty much a new squad. If Forest Green are going to be up there come May that actually gives me confidence as they were nothing special at all and when we get players firing and hopefully get a ball-winning midfielder in and some pace, I see no reason at all why we can't get up the table. We've played a lot of nice stuff. It will come, I'm almost certain of it.

Some random thoughts. Firstly I thought the pitch looked really good. Remember that tonight was the third game in four days on it. Credit where credit is due. I was apprehensive when I saw the team tonight. Far too small and weak in midfield. Having said that I couldn’t fault Dooley tonight. Worked his socks off. Shame about Beesley but Andrews grew into the game. Should he have scored with free header though? If that had been Calvin there would have been some abuse on here. Graham to my mind is still feeling his way into mans football as is Taylor. If we lost O’Connell it would be a disaster as he is the glue that holds that defence together. Odoh was exceptional and deserved MOM and I was also impressed with O’Keeffe. Like so many other posters though I have to say that we’re missing an aggressive midfield general. Cavanagh, Stephen Dawson and Gary Jones are all cited as classic examples. Is Jimmy Ryan fit and available? But let’s not let a decent performance in defeat fool us. We could quite easily be in the quagmire of the bottom two by 5.00pm on Saturday.
Can you really be in the 'quagmire of the bottom two' after 4 games? I mean, we could quite easily be in there yes, but a win could take us in the top half. I know BBM got some stick for not looking at the league table, but it really isn't worth getting worried about the table in August.

Disappointed with the outcome of that game because (despite the commentator behind me implying FG were the second coming of the great 70s Brazil sides) that game was winnable with better finishing.
Looking at last season, 32 of our 61 goals during the campaign came from Lund (11) Humphrys (11) and Swiss-army Jimmy (10) - 2 have gone and one not seen the pitch yet. Behind that there's Newby and Bees on 6 a-piece and Baah, Ollie and Doney on 3 (again 2 have gone). Bees had his scoring boots on in pre-season but has been less clinical thus far in games that count. It's not a complete shocker then, that we've only got 3 goals this season to date.
One thing that has characterised our starts this year is they've been fast (unlike previous seasons) but in all games we've faded in the second half, lost some of our impetus and discipline, allowed other teams to compete more and don't have a lot to show for it. This has been typified by our threat up the right flank, with O'Keefe and Odoh looking dangerous and creating chances but the former sitting back more in the second half and Odoh looking like he has only got 60 minutes max in him at this stage. Our threat down the left has not looked quite as potent with Doney and mostly Newby assisting.
Bees drags people out of place and is a real handful to defend as he's big but quick. Andrews, by contrast, is much more static. That being said, he twice ghosted across the FG defensive line from deep at corners, the first over hit by Morley and the second a good chance put wide.
As Robbie said post-match, there was a lot to admire last night, but also a lot to work on. Granted, we don't have a dominant tackler but I thought we scrapped really well in midfield with what we have, intercepting loose balls and errant passes with a high work rate rather than out and out tackling, though we did some of that too.
The true sickener was their second goal. I said to my mate as soon as they broke forward "please don't let one in straight away afterwards" and we did. Schoolboy error which hopefully we don't make again. Much like the goal which came from a set piece in injury time @ Harrogate.
With more experience under their belts and everyone back to choose from, we should have a back 4 which won't let us down too often. The jury is still out on the midfield. What we need most though is to put more chances away. If we start to do that, confidence will grow and it could be an interesting season. If we don't, there's going to be a lot more frustration and nail-biting ahead. I'm nowhere near panicking yet though.
Shout out to Shun too. I'd rather watch footy on the park than FG every week. Cynical, snidey and the antithesis of the beautiful game. Aided and abetted by Haines who turned a blind eye to all their tricks thereby encouraging them by default. Not to even mention some of his bizarre decisions, apparently giving free kicks the wrong way multiple times and booking O'Keefe early then ignoring some of their very rash challenges.
Of course its disappointing that we lost but it is still early in the season and we shouldn't start panicking yet. Everyone has their own view of the game, some good and some bad. What concerns me is our defending at corners. Sitting behind the goal it was clear we set up with a zonal defence. Beesley/Andrews, MT, EC and SG all on the six yard line and Lynch on the goal line. What happens is that no one takes responsibility and no one picks up their players. We seemed to get caught out a few times. I would prefer man for man and the goalie should take control of the 6 yard box. If the ball comes in the 6 yard box he should either catch it or punch it. Perhaps Coleman being 6ft 6ins would be a better option. Despite having a team of giants defending corners we look vulnerable.

I'll be honest, I thought Odoh struggled last night. The work rate and endeavor was there but I don't think much came off for him. He's exciting to watch but his attempts at getting past people were thwarted and he wasn't able to create as much as we'd have liked.
I think we're desperately lacking character in our squad. I think there's quality there no doubt but I'm looking around the pitch but I'm not seeing anyone who can take the game by the scruff of the neck and dictate our play. O'Connell as captain and Morley as vice captain don't scream leadership to me. An experienced central midfielder is vital I think.
I also though that as much as Andrews didn't win as many headers as someone who is built like The Undertaker should, he was a big handful for their defence and when we did get the ball into him, we looked dangerous but it highlighted the need for a different striking option from the bench. Cashman hasn't played there yet in his three appearances so presume he's seen more as a #10 or wide attacker but a someone who can finish and play off one of the big men would be a great addition I think.
If I hadn't seen such riches, I could live with being poor

Sad to see that only Matty Done could be bothered to walk the length of the field to acknowledge the Sandy Lane at the end of the game. Everyone else disappeared down the tunnel.

Acknowledge the Sandy Lane for what? The crackling atmosphere the fans created all night?

There are several similarities with the last two seasons. Lack of match fit and generally fit players who can take part in a game. The Covid situation will put White back a bit, plus he was the least match fit in any case. At least Grant and Broadbent have had a full pre season. Another similarity is naming people on the bench who will only ever get minutes if there is an injury. Keohane cannot be fit otherwise he would have played at some point. I think he could be an asset in midfield when he is eventually ready. Respect that with a thin squad you cannot afford to risk Jimmy when he is such a versatile player. I don’t think Dunne or Brierley we’re going to get on the pitch. Playing against physical sides won’t see them in their best light. So did anyone expect more at this stage? Surely not. The adage you know where you stand after 10 games I don’t think will hold true this season. We got players and the manager and coach in so late, we were miles behind most teams. This league is renowned for teams making runs from way down the table. Fancy that could be us this year. UTDNFS

Agree with this about defending corners
At the very least, we should leave Odoh upfield which would take two of theirs out of the equation and give us an outlet with clearances instead of the ball coming straight back
On the keeper issue: Lynch has started the season in decent form so i'd keep him between the sticks on Saturday, but then give Coleman a run out in the EFL tie at Shrewsbury, just to see how he shapes up, keeping both of them on their toes
Maybe that's Keohane when he's closer to fitness (it would mean he doesn't get forward), but I'd be very surprised if Stockdale isn't looking to add bite to the midfield.
We can point to individual mistakes for both their goals, but in truth we didn't offer anywhere near enough after a very bright opening 30 mins. It's no surprise that we missed Beesley when he went off, compounded by Andrews looking a million miles away from fitness or the standard required for League Two (there is time for him to improve).
Back to my original point, midfield is where the battle was lost. Morley and Dooley, centrally, offered less resitance than the Afghan security forces.

I'd rather he showed some balls and took the ball and/or man in the leadup to the first goal.
I don't go to Dale to get clapped by the players. The atmosphere last night, as with most home games, was a bit shit.
