The last few match threads & other posts have started to call for Bbexit (claiming it before Baz 😀).

I like most am not happy with results, league position or at least half the squad at the moment. Covid aside, would we have invested more in the team? No one will know for sure but I doubt it...

Do I call for Bbexit.. No..
Do I think he is doing a good job?.. On the fence
Do I think he is up to League 1 Manager.. No..

What would I do if I was the Chairman?

Bring a new Manager in & make BBM assistant to gain more experience???

I think an experienced Assistant would undermine BBM's authority and if I was him I'd consider it an insult.

If there is money around to potentially change the manager (and likely the need to change backroom staff too) I'd much rather that the money was used to bolster the playing options for BBM instead.

He's got an eye for a player and this team are obviously playing for him. I think with a slightly deeper squad we stay up this year.

I get what you mean. There's a difference between an enforced assistant and knowing when to ask for help. It's something we all need to do if we want to improve in life.

Even when we have some of our more skilled defenders playing, we leak goals. It's been that way for a long time and it's not something he seems to be able to fix. Seeking guidance from an experienced defensive coach could be as handy as getting another player in. Maybe even an exprienced centre back who has done their coching badges. Two birds, one stone.

A left back is a priority but another striker is also needed. Humphrys can't play every game. A Wilbraham/Davies style signing might help, in the sense of having an old head as an option when needed.

When did we last have a dedicated defence coach?
Could a combination of playing style and lack of height lead to us not practicing defending dead ball situations effectively in training?

Most probably the answer to that would be Griffiths when hill brought him in to help... out

So if Hill was willing to have a that sort of assistance perhaps BBM would be open to the idea of a defence coach.

James who would they coach, we have no LB, a RB who can barely train between playing half games and two centre half’s who are injured.
BBM as a player sat in front of the back four and if McShane cannot play he still has plenty of experience to impart into other, in particular Roberts. As a player McShane was easily the equal of Griffiths. Money needs spending on the pitch not off it.

Difference was Griffiths wasn’t brought in as defensive coach, he was helping Hill until Flitcroft became available.

I am not sure whether he should or shouldn't have a defence coach. Just responding to Tom's comment. You make very good points, is it possible some specialised coaching might be handy for those players mentioned?

Could Calvin still do a job for us. I always rated him as a box to box player and he was a good defender. You never know he might even bag a goal or two (Don’t laugh)
Can’t be worse than what we have the moment if he was match fit.

Please please please tell me you're not serious?

He wasn't a good defender at all, he was useful at getting a head on the ball at set pieces but he wasn't a good defender, or a good striker, or a good footballer.

Well I am half-serious. Do you not think the Calvin we had would have made a positive difference against Wigan on Saturday? We have no height in the team particularly in defence with O’Connell out and if we need a plan B or C we have no one to lump it up to who can keep hold of the ball.
He certainly wasn’t a striker but he fit the criteria I just listed. And he defended very well, when he played, in BBM’s run of games after taking over from Keef.

He was handy to have when the opposition were slinging desperation balls into the box in the last 5 minutes of games but didn't he actually start a game as centre half at Wimbledon? and it was a disaster? I seem to remember a cameo appearance at left back that didn't go much better either. Being tall and able to head the ball is not the only requirements, otherwise we might as well just've kept Delaney. Agree that Beesley could be better at holding the ball up, but hopefully that's an aspect of his game that will improve.

Owt against Calvin, but there must be better options.

Take it you wasn't at Wimbledon away a few years back when he started as centre back? Think we were 3 down after 30 minutes, and he somehow managed not to get sent off after hauling down their striker, who was clean through on goal.

Was he an asset at defending set plays? Absolutely. Can he play in defence full time? Absolutely not.

BBM on 11:02 - Jan 19 with 1873 viewsjonahwhereru

There is a massive difference in being the free defender in your own box, tasked with attacking he ball at set pieces and marking a player out of set pieces.
To be fair to him at Wimbledon he was a body in their to plug gaps, literally. He was not directly fault for any of the goals. It didn’t help when Luke headed a ball onto the foot of a striker who now plays in the Championship for their first. But Neither Calvin nor anyone else wanted him playing as CH that day.

No, I think positionally, he'd have been all over the place positionally and cost us goals through being unable to mark properly.

Beesley should be offering as much as what Calvin did when defending corners and holding the ball up as well.

Calvin did far more good for Dale than Leonard so I don't see your point. Yes Calvin shouldn't have been offered his last contract but he had a far far better career at Dale than the likes of Leonard.

Absolutely.

My point was that picking out just a couple of winning goals doesn't really provide a strong counter-argument to Chaff's post.

And you missed out his winners v Bradford and Port Vale.

Agreed. I was just making a quick reply. Calvin gets a lot of unwarranted stick for me. Yes he was never a Hendo,Humps or Hogan - but he had his moments and he played his part in the goal which kept us in League 1 - far from the best but even further from the worst we've had.

If we’d had Calvin in the 80s he’d have been considered a club legend, as it is he’s still on the “really good servant” pile for me. A lot of the stick he got was a bit disrespectful as he’d be the first to admit his goalscoring should have been better, but bar the last couple of years he was a valuable member of the squad.

And a tremendous ambassador for the club, of whom he still speaks highly. And not many of the Radio Bolton pundits are able to do that.

Fully agree. Calvin was a fantastic servant for the club, and apart from the club blundering in offering him his last seasons deal (club's fault; not Calvins) he will be remembered fondly by most. Apart from Davymycock, who had it in for him, whilst somehow recently trying to defend the recent non-goalscoring record of Matt Done.
