Tommy Smith was a big part of our first fairy tale ascent to the top against all the odds. I never thought I'd see it a second time, but that too came to pass, and now we hope it can happen again. On reflection though, that first promotion into the uncharted territory of the First Division was the most special of all. Will we ever see the Swans top of the EPL at Christmas? Attitudes were different obviously back in those days and I know from speaking to some past players from that time that Tommy viewed the likes of Ardiles and Villa as foreigners coming to take British players jobs. He made it plain that Ardiles wasn’t welcome and that he was going to go out of his way to make sure the red carpet wasn’t rolled out for them.
Ardiles was the first to get Tommy’s special welcome 😀

Never had the privilege of watching him play, but from what I’ve seen and read he never wanted to come to Swansea, and only travelled down here for games while still training at Liverpool. Also was never fond of black people.

Let’s be honest, he’s not a Swans legend, as legendary as that Ardiles assault was (I was on the NB that might), but in his day he was a very good player of his type in a very good Liverpool team. |  |
