So he's finally shown his hand and declared for England and changed allegiance, not the first to do this and being London born and bred you can see why.

No doubt many will be pleased and many others here disappointed interesting to note far from the first, Costa and ZAha have both done this albeit perhaps in a different scenarios.

Through no fault of his own (well maybe a little bit) hes got himself in a right shit storm.

It'll all get political and he'll receive the usual death threats. It would have been the same if he opted the other way.

A bit like Rory when golf was introduced into the Olympics. Team Ire or Team GB.

Think he pulled out in the end!

Dont know why we bother. .... but we do!

Had the inevitable Twitter stuff, think it's worse though cos he's played for Ireland already, still the rules are the rules and he played by them, think where he's really gone wrong is the delaying he did when he originally pulled out whenever it was maybe it'd would have been better to do it sooner.

Broadly I agree with you though it's partly his making and partly others.

Should have never played for them in the first place as he is English and born in England!

Now that he has three caps for Ireland he should have stuck with them but make no mistake the boy is English.

With Brexit the political climate could change again. I thought Kevin Gallen went to a Catholic school and many people did not speak to him when he played for England schoolboys.

While Rice is a tremendous prospect and being born in England its hard not to feel betrayed if you support the ROI. Brought up through the ranks wearing green all the way to the Senior team and getting 3 caps (non competitive )it looked like he could be a mainstay to build around for his career.

Once England came calling it was only going to end one way and now its up to him to break into a very strong English side which is not a guarantee IMO.

Everybody is relieved the saga is over and hopefully it sets a precedence for players to want to play for their Countries and realize its about the pride not the chance to advance their careers .

There's something to be said for Ireland putting work into his international development and giving him experience, etc, only for him to choose England...

That being said he's born and bred London and both his parents (I think) are English, it's his grandparents who are Irish.

The work done by ROI to groom (for want of a better word!) young players who in the example of Declan Rice was born elsewhere and who's parents were born elsewhere is part of the problem here. RIO in particular have been doing this for years.

He was rejected by Chelsea at 14 years old so an approach to play international football would have been very exciting to a boy with fairly limited expectations at the time.

People have been lining up since the Rice announcement to condemn the rule around friendly's not committing a players international future. However I think it's there to prevent proactively gifted friendly appearances to 'not quite ready' young players tying a them in for life.

It was only Jack Charlton in the mid 80s utilising the 'granny' rule to the nth degree that non Irish players have been playing for Ireland the last 30 odd years anyway although I appreciate that these days there is a much bigger diaspora.

Prior to that they weren't considered probably with the exception of Lawrenson in the late 70s who had an Irish mother. This is not including McGrath and O'Leary who were born in London to Irish parents and moved back to Dublin as kids so were brought up Irish. Shay Brennan in the mid 60s I think was the first non Irish born player to play for the national team.

You could say that half of U2 aren't Irish if you wanted to look at it from the point of view of birthplace.

How about a list of English cricketers who weren't born in England?

As an Ireland fan, I'm not massively disappointed. I was born in the UK and have an English accent so I'm not one to throw stones, and plus ROI are just of guilty of the same thing to young Northern Irish players. Better this than end up like Mark Lawrenson, playing for Ireland for convience then constantly calling England "we" as a pundit

Just confused from a practical level give how far down the path he'd gone - he'd be guaranteed to be a starting international for a decade for Ireland. Will he get 5 caps for England? Given how much leverage being an international gives you at contract negotiation he must really wanna try to play for England

Love the honesty

A lot of countries guilty of it, this is a strange one because Rice is actually English and probably grew up supporting England my guess is it he didn't think he would ever have the chance of playing for England and now he has so he has sh1t on Ireland.

The worse case was when Germany played Ghana in 2010 World Cup and you had a Boateng bother on either side
