'The 50 year old has also managed Preston, Stockport County, Shrewsbury and Northwich Victoria'

Aggravating that 2 non league clubs get mentioned before his first managerial role!

I may be wrong but I think the dislike of Parkin is somewhat limited. His second spell wasn't that good but the first spell as you say was about the first time in ages that we had any prospect of success (with the exception of Bergara's team). My memory of the first spell was that we were pretty successful but mainly away from home, whereas at home we did not score that much. Perhaps others will contradict this!

I'd endorse that view. Can't remember which season it was but I think we had a record number of 0-0 home draws, and pretty drab encounters they were

Offset against that, we were no longer regarded as automatic relegation fodder and flirted with the right end of the table. Perhaps the negativity towards him stems from his move to Barnsley, taking Jonah with him, where they both bombed. In the end, there were far more positives than negatives though his second spell didn't amount to much. It did leave us with Hilly

The initial negativity towards Parkin did indeed stem from his defection to Barnsley and it went as high as boardroom level.

Both Eyre and Simmo have made more money for their football talents, than all of us put together, so deserve a bit more respect for their coaching abilities :-)

Simmo was a cracking player for us, brought in £750,000 and showed great integrity by sticking by his best mate, he made mistakes, but I'm glad that he's doing well.

I'll also throw the hatred of Steve Parkin as a baffling one, another guy who did more good than bad for us, it didn't end great, but he gave us Grant Holt, Glenn Murray and the play offs.

I do think that we are pretty classy as Dale fans with ex employees, but the three mentioned above and Bobby Grant I just don't understand the hatred.

Just to address the Grant point. For me, he summed up everything that was wrong about that Coleman era in terms of attitude. Can be no doubt that he was a talented player who earned us several points on his own through flashes of brilliance, but he brought the club into disrepute with the way he acted at times and although I wouldn't say I 'hate' him as such, he reminds me of an era at the club that I'd sooner forget.

Simmo's side was absolutely dreadful but like many others have said, 15 years is a long time and I don't think many of us would begrudge him this success.

On the point of Simmo’s side being dreadful — it became that way rather than started out that way. On paper, bringing in Hodges, Beech and Macaulay seemed like a masterstroke, given we already had the likes of Platt, Connor, McEvily, McCourt, Townson, Evans, Griffiths and Simpson himself, of course, on the books.

There were early wobbles, such as getting absolutely destroyed by Man City pre-season, and the aforementioned Lincoln away game, but the potential of that side as an attacking force (Wrexham and Cambridge) was there for all to see.

A combination of the ‘big three’ signings being crocked or unfit, plus clear, unresolved problems between players, Hoyland and Simpson himself undid the potential. It’s a shame, but the players we had at that time had the potential to achieve so much more.

Lincoln at home was particularly worse than Lincoln away.

The Lincoln home game was the Tuesday night before we beat Coventry in the cup. We were abysmal - think we lost 0-2 and Gary McAllister watching in the stand must have thought the cup game was a formality after that. Simpson was scratching his head after the cup win and even mentioned how he couldn't explain how we were so poor and so good in the space of 5 days.

Aye, but it was 1-0, Ben Futcher scoring, I think.

Agree with that. I'd also throw in when he couldn't be bothered waiting around to get his awards at the POTS do, so he just headed back to Liverpool dragging George with him. In all the years, I don't recall any player for whom hanging around till 8-30 was too much effort before.

I was always a big Parkin fan, but that second spell gets worse every time you look at it. It's almost incredulous that we had a forward line of Holt and Lambert and still couldn't get anywhere near the Play Offs. It's not even as if the rest of the side was dross - we had Jones and Cooksey in midfield. Always felt that following the sale of Holt, it was never the same again for Parkin at Dale.

That's unfair on Sutton who produced a side that could and should have reached the play-offs at least in 91/92. Yes he lost the plot at the end, but he was a far better manager than Bergara for Dale who did ok for half a season.

The contrast in atmosphere between that Tuesday night, which was Toxic, at best to the following Saturday was incredible.
