I said the same thing when he came in last time, how will he improve players but he did improve players, several players like Padula, Shittu, Rowlands, Ainsworth, Gallen and Furlong played the best football of their career under him and was similar at Blackpool with Ian Evatt, Charlie Adam, DJ Campbell and Luke Varney, all did brilliantly under him

Although I imagine a lot of that was down to his man management skills and building up confidence rather than expert technical coaching.

That's not a criticism - if it works, great. And if him being here again gets the crowd to cheer up and stop audibly slating our own players, I'm sure performances would improve too.

Posted this in that WUM's thread, should have posted it here:-

We all know the dangers to the reputations of Holloway and Bircham but if they're willing to risk it then more power to them.

I loved Wilkins as a player but thought he was a novice manager when he was with us and he did a poor job as a result but I will never, ever forget how great he was as a player (oh my sweet Lord that take down and backheel move to Wilson up in Goodison during the 3-0 win!) so nothing will tarnish my memories of him as a player. And nothing will ever tarnish my memories of the two lads during their previous stints.

They're adults, we're adults. Why are we all so worried about feelings if they're not?

I love, I mean I really love tactics. I love new ideas, I love progressive coaching. I could talk about them all day and night. Now, I'm not saying that Holloway can't deliver on those fronts. Not in the slightest. All I'm saying is that for all wannabe coaches like me fantasise and bloviate about the intricacies of the game sometimes what we miss is that the difference I performance can be emotional, psychological, inspirational. Inspirational.

Right now the club - the players, the supporters, probably even the office staff - need inspiration more than anything else. We need someone, or some people to bring the fun, the relaxation, the pride, the passion and the togetherness back into us. To drive it into us. We need our identity back. We need someone to do it for us. And Al Pacino's an actor, so that leaves Ollie.

Fugg it. Let's do it.

"The opposite of love, after all, is not hate, but indifference."

Don't get me wrong, I think he'll definitely have a positive effect but I just worry that we need to cast the net a bit wider.

One things for sure, he'll put smiles back on our faces again as he's a fantastic character.

I've sort of said this before, but I don't buy the idea that there are loads of good managers out there waiting for us if only we cast our net wide enough. See Northern's assessment of the likelihood of Gary Rowett for reasons why.

If a manager is available in November there's a bloody good reason for it.

My expectations of Holloway would be very low but frankly at least I like the bloke. We could do a hell of a lot worse.

So the family have been on a strict diet for the past few months to try and save money and live more healthily, all full of fresh veg and dry meat and no rich sauces and definitely no sign off any chips and no desserts. But the kids are bored of the same old boring dishes mum is serving up every night, even though they we told it was cheaper but better for them in the long run. It really is no fun and no one is actually seeing any benefits.

Then one night dad has had enough and tells the family he is going to bring home KFC every night and the kids are deliriously happy and licking their lips. But for how long, how soon will it be before the kids then realise that actually KFC is not really as nice as they remembered it being the last time, and actually a lot of the time the chicken was very greasy and made you feel sick afterwards and wishing you hadn't bought it.

Think we have looked around, have spoken to Robinson, Freedman, Powell, Clement and possibly Sherwood also approached Rowett for the job, thing is when you speak to Holloway he is such an impressive bloke he is going to stand out in an interview process.

Of course many will say we should look abroad or go for other managers but it's not an exact science. Hughes looked perfect on paper and was a disaster, JFH seemed a bright prospect and didn't really make it with us.

I think at this stage of where the club is someone coming in and giving the place a lift is needed, lets face it if Warnock hadn't taken the Cardiff job we'd be wanting him in and in terms of style he's not hugely different to Holloway.

A week ago i'd have said the idea of him coming back was ridiculous but looking at the other options and where we are at the moment I think it makes a lot of sense.

I do think it helps being a bit of an oddball as QPR manager, quiet and intense never works here.

I'm under no illusions, Holloway has no magic button and is not going to turn this around quickly, whoever gets the job this is going to be a difficult season, I just think having someone desperate to do well for the club and desperate to be here makes a difference and will hopefully buy him a bit more time before the knives come out from fans. Rowett may well be a better long term manager but has turned us down twice now, much like with players I'd rather have someone who wants to be here.

Love Ollie but this is going to end in tears , as a short term fix I would take Holloway over jfh every day of the week though !
An appointment to please the fans ain't a way to run the club and just proves further that their still winging it.
Hey ho, at least I might get my givafcukability back for a few months at least

This sums it up for me.

We've had some very good candidates in the running for the job, you could say the only candidates you could get. Wasn't Clement the "dream manager" last time round.
Are they turning the club down or are we turning them down.?

As much as I love Ollie I'm concerned this will end in tears.

I'm usually against a 'til the end of the season appointment', but in this case, given the lack of candidates, I'd go for it with Ollie. He might go for that, but doubt Birch would want to uproot his family back here for 7 months only.
It's a really hard one. Appointing managers, as dave says, is ridiculously tough. Everyone gets it wrong all the time, and if you get it right, he'll be poached. Have a lot of sympathy for Les.

Bare bones.

For so many reasons it should be a 'til the end of the season appointment with no money for new players in January and with Tony shutting the fcuk up between now and the end of the season.

This will hopefully go well, so well in fact that offering an annually rolling contract at the end of the season will be a mere formality.

However, if Rangers recent history has taught us anything there is a chance this could all go pear shaped hence the three vital points mentioned in the first paragraph.

Got to say the level of preappointment division of the appointment has really surprised me.

I'd let a new boss sign a right back - or bring Darnell back if they think he's ready, but agree, other than that it should be one in one out.

Bare bones.

Holloway's a massive fan of Doughty, not sure if we can bring him back but if we can I'd expect it to happen.

Personally I like the idea of Ollie coming back.

I always thought he was on a hiding to nothing in his last season here.
The slide in performances closely linked with the lack of options he had within his squad at the time with both Gallen and Rowlnds injured for most of the season and Furs beginning to decline.

He had no money and signing options incredibly limited, compare the (fit) squad he had back then with what he's inheriting, and there's a world of difference.

He's a better manager now than he was back then and he has two promotions from the Championship with under dog teams. Neither Blackpool nor Palace had the strongest teams at the time, but he managed to get them promoted.

His problems at Palace are well documented, but it basically boiled down a scatter gun transfer policy in his attempt to change the style of play to that similar to the style he was playing at Blackpool it was too much change and and one which in which he eneded up with a dressing room revolt. I don't think he'll have the same problem here. The players on the whole appear to be genuine and able to play different styles on the whole.

I believe with some of the players we have here that he'll have better chance of moulding them to his play style... to which ironically Faurlin would have been perfectly suited... maybe get him back from Getafe on loan given he's not playing.

Him and Birch will immediately change the atmosphere at the club which is drastically needed, and he's also a media darling, which always helps.

Despite him having been a pundit for the best part of the last year, he's been heavily focused on the Championship ( and to some degree QPR), and he knows what is required in this league now ( as opposed to ten years ago).

I don't believe there are many better coandidates than him for the job.

Proven in the Championship - Tick.
Three promotions(2 from Championship) - Tick
Motivational - Tick
Backing of the fanbase - Tick
Attractive footbal ( given the right players) - Tick
Reasonable record at improving players or bringing them towards their potential - Tick
Capeable of all the above on a tight budget - Tick

There are only three negatives/qustion marks IMO:
Ability to kick on in the Premiership if promotoed
Chances of spoiling good memories
Appetite for the challenge after CP and Millwall ?

Without being overly dramatic I am shocked at that. Unless it's like those Brexit and US Presidential polls where in this case the Brexiters and the Trump's are the no to Holloway vote then that split really is surprising.

I realise it's all been said and done recently but we appear to have been turned down by the first couple/few that we approached and bearing in mind there really is no outstanding alternative or guarantee of success then why wouldn't you want to give him a go?!

It's well documented the malaise of the fans, dwindling attendance poor atmosphere lack of identification with the club etc etc etc oh and the club making posters telling us to sing more and yet here is an opportunity to bin all of the above in one hit. It may well be short term and the importance of the contract shouldn't be understated but bloody hell if I was there I'd be chomping at the bit to go to the Norwich game and actually enjoy the occasion and atmosphere*

*Admittedly not as much as a few pre and post beers with Disco and PP but even so.

Apparently it's all off.
Once he realised they were serious about offering him the job, he said that he might be mad, but he is not totally stupid.
He had only applied for a day out.
