Our defensive play 09:34 - Dec 3 with 1547 viewsJethroJack

Is simply awesome....despite changing the back 4.
Every reason to expect it to get even better with the master of all DM's back on the pitch. How the hell Leon has never been selected to represent his country is one of sport's biggest mysteries!

Not bad for a club that's renowned for its style & attacking philosophy.

Well done GM

Leon really is the only out and out DM we have. Ki has learned a lot and does well there but isn't as good . And as for Shelvey - he may learn the discipline needed for that role one day but he's far too rash and inconsistently unreliable for that role. Could you ever see him giving short passes at high tempo the way Leon does or even being able to read play like him? Not a chance, more suited to either a Pratley box to box style or AM .

So who replaces Taylor at left back following his 5th booking of the season - move Jazz over to the left? Rangel back in at RB?

Bartley looking stronger every game, and a real threat at set plays!!

Was Rangel injured or just rested?

Speaking to the ST holder next to me last night we were in complete agreement that our attacking threat at corners is nil. We need to mix it up a bit and try to station players at the front post for flick on's or the back post to be headed back across to the likes of Wilf, Bartley etc.

Just putting a hanging ball up towards the penalty spot is such a predictable way to allow the opposition to clear. If the ball is cleverly being pinged around it makes it so much more difficult for keepers and defenders to react and adjust.

As for LB could be a good shout as Tiendalli hasn't been near the pitch for quite some time .

I hear what you are saying re: set plays...

Something needs to change as it doesn't quite stack up - Bartley & Wilf's threat in the air, Gylfi's superb delivery... yet we don't seem to cause too many problems at set plays??

I do recall Green pulling off a great save from Bartley in the first half tho!

That's the exception but a welcome one !
We do need to mix this up a lot more. The likes of Stoke and the majority of the lower half of the table pose bigger threats at set plays. For most of them it's because they can't play the passing game we do. It is no shame on our part to try to maximize every attacking situation we can. Points make prizes innit !

We don't just do that though. The ball whipped into the near post from which Bartley nearly scored was a superb set piece. But we don't score many, that's true.

Stoke you say?

The fact is that goals are very rarely scored from corners, if you get 5 or 6 in a full season you'll be well above average. Tbh we'd be better taking a short corner and jest getting it back in to play, rather than crosses where we have no advantage whatsoever.

Only 19 corners compared to probably an average of 50+!!!!

Sure we've had about 15 in the last 2 games

This is Patches O'Houlihan saying "Take care of your balls, and they'll take care of you."

I bet you they over the last four seasons have scored not only from corners but free kicks into the box quite a few times more than we have.
