Happy League 2024/25 Week 21 (of 38) - Deadline Sunday 29th December 15.00
at 00:10 22 Dec 2024

Week 20 results

BURNLEY 2 WATFORD 1

Burnley kept pace with the Championship's top two after this win, to preserve their unbeaten home record. A super 6 got tis spot-on, and a further 11 had the outcome.

LEEDS UNITED 4 OXFORD UNITED 0
Manor Solomon scored one and teed up two more as Leeds coasted to a ninth successive home win and sent floundering Oxford, who failed to have a shot on target, into the Championship relegation zone. Nobody had this spot-on, but 22 did get the outcome.

MANSFIELD TOWN 1 ROTHERHAM UNITED 0
Mansfield secured their first win in eight league games with a goal from Deji Oshilaja. Well done to noah4x4 for being the only one to get this spot-on, and another 8 had the outcome.

WIGAN ATHLETIC 2 SHREWSBURY TOWN 2
League One strugglers Shrewsbury came back from two goals down in the final quarter to steal a draw. Well done to Moor_Pinot for being the only one to have this spot-on, and only unitedwhites and gerry_us got the outcome.

CHESTERFIELD 1 AFC WIMBLEDON 0
Ex-U's loanee Armando Dobra's goal after 3 minutes gave Chesterfield victory, to make it four wins in a row. Only mfb_cufc and basher2010 got this spot-on, and a further 12 had the outcome.

NEWPORT COUNTY 6 MILTON KEYNES DONS 3
Bryn Morris and Bobby Kamwa both scored hat-tricks as Newport ended their six-game winless run in League Two with this emphatic victory, and stretched their unbeaten league run to five games. Nobody had this spot-on, though 4 did get the outcome. 15 predicted a win for MK Dons with 11 going for a 2-1 in what was the weeks most predicted score.

SWINDON TOWN 3 GRIMSBY TOWN 1
Ian Holloway celebrated his 1,000th game as a manager in style as his Swindon side blew away Grimsby courtesy of a Kabongo Tshimanga double. A final game this week with no 3 pointer, but 8 did have the outcome.

A mixed bag of results, that incredibly almost produced a week of wins for all the home teams, with only a late equaliser from Shrewsbury putting paid to that. A good week for the hosts then, but it only helped to achieve a total of 10 spot-ons, that were shared out, with 10 members getting one each. When it comes to the weeks top scorer, for what must be the first time, it is a seven-way go, with blueeagle, Jorash63 and gerry_us having the Burnley 2-1, and mfb_cufc, basher2010, noah4x4 and Moor_Pinot, with the 3 pointers mentioned above. They each also had three outcomes, to give them all a decent 6 points. A special mention for unitedwhites and Tropical_Us, who both had an impressive five outcomes.

U'sual Champions League Just the 6 games to go before we find out who this seasons 12 qualifiers are. Current champ blueeagle has qualified automatically, and the current member in the important eleventh, and final, qualifying place is wessex_exile with his 81 points. But it is only on the first to post rule from unitedwhites. This could be the first time that tie-breaker rules decides who qualifies, so posting first could be significant.

Happy Cup All the details for the Quarter-finals will be on a separate thread sometime after Boxing Day.

In the Premier A decent week for the top two means blueeagle maintains his 2 point lead over mfb_cufc. It is now a 9 point gap to Daniel in third, but along with basher2010 and thrillseeker they should comfortably qualify for the U'sual Champions League. But is a 6 game shoot out for Sector4 and unitedwhites to see who qualifies, as they are only separated by the first to post rule. At the bottom the relegation zone remains unchanged for the first time in six weeks, as it was after the Lord Mayors show for oxfcolu, but his outcome was enough to keep him out the bottom three on the most 3 pointer rule.

In Division One The lead has changed once again, as the decent week for noah4x4 takes him back there, after a week away. The impressive five outcomes for Tropical_Us moved him up a couple of places and back into the other automatic spot once again. Three outcomes for last weeks leader bwildered drops him to third. The decent week for Jorash63 moved him up another two places, as he continues his relentless run, up to fourth. Three outcomes for Lewis_1, as he also drops two to fifth. A solid 5 points for wessex_exile moves him up a place into the final play-off spot, after two weeks away, as he takes advantage of an unfortunate missed week for durham_exile, that drops him out of the top six for the first time since Week 7. A solid 5 points for Blue4U2, and a decent week for Moor_Pinot, moved them both up a place, and very much in contention for the play-offs.

THE TABLES (144 out of 280 played)
(Tie-breaker: Most 3 pointers, and then the first to post)

Week 21 Fixtures

EVERTON v NOTTINGHAM FOREST
FULHAM v AFC BOURNEMOUTH
SWANSEA CITY v LUTON TOWN
BOLTON WANDERERS v LINCOLN CITY
LEYTON ORIENT v CAMBRIDGE UNITED

Good luck and a Merry Christmas to all members.

Week 19 results

ARSENAL 0 EVERTON 0

Arsenal failed to capitalise on Premier League leaders Liverpool dropping points as they were held to a frustrating bore draw, with Everton failing to have a shot on target. No points for anyone from this game as everyone predicted a win for Arsenal.

NEWCASTLE UNITED 4 LEICESTER CITY 0
Newcastle emphatically halted a run of four Premier League games without victory as they inflicted a first defeat on new Leicester manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, whose team only managed one shot on target. Nobody had this spot-on, but 21 did get the outcome, with a massive 14 going for a 2-1 in what was the weeks most predicted score.

MIDDLESBROUGH 1 MILLWALL 0
Emmanuel Latte Lath fired Middlesbrough back into the Championship play-off places with a goal that inflicted defeat on Millwall manager Neil Harris in his final match in charge. A super 6 got this spot-on, and a further 15 had the outcome.

STOKE CITY 2 CARDIFF CITY 2
Captain Ben Gibson scored a 95th minute equaliser – having earlier put the ball in his own net – to earn Stoke a dramatic draw. Nobody had this spot-on, though 4 did get the outcome. The other 21 predicted a win for Stoke.

EXETER CITY 1 BARNSLEY 2
Two goals early in the second half saw Barnsley come from behind to win, and end their six-match winless run in all competitions. A super 6 got this spot-on, and 6 also had the outcome.

READING 0 BLACKPOOL 3
New Reading manager Noel Hunt is still looking for his first win following a dismal display, that ended their five match unbeaten run in the league. Another game with no 3 pointer, and only bwildered and BFG got the outcome. 16 predicted a win for Reading, with 13 going for a 2-1.

STEVENAGE 2 STOCKPORT COUNTY 1
Stevenage are now unbeaten in four, as a Jamie Reid penalty wins it for them. 3 got this spot-on, and another 2 had the outcome. 19 predicted a win for Stockport.

SALFORD CITY 3 NOTTS COUNTY 0
Salford secured back-to-back home wins with this comfortable victory. Yet another game with no 3 pointer, but 6 did get the outcome.

BROMLEY 0 PORT VALE 0
Vale have only won once in their last six league games as they slip four points behind leaders Walsall after this bore draw. A final game this week with no 3 pointer, and only Daniel and unitedwhites had the outcome. 22 predicted a win for Vale.

WALSALL 1 BARROW 0
Defender Taylor Allen's first-half strike stretched the Walsall unbeaten run to 10 games. 3 had this spot-on, and a further 21 got the outcome.

This weeks guest unitedwhites kindly picked a number of "good things" amongst his 10 fixtures. 8 in total, and they were all suitably well supported, but not for the first time this season predicting football matches is never that easy, and the real winners would be the bookies. It lead to six games failing to have a 3 pointer, though the other four did produce a respectable 18 between them, with the Premier coming out on top by 14-4, in that particular contest. Another difficult week, but it still produced a top performance from oxfcolu, who did brilliant to be only one to have three 3 pointers, the wins for Barnsley, Stevenage and Walsall, and two outcomes, to make him the weeks top scorer with a magnificent 11 points. Two members did well to have two 3 pointers, with both having the 1-0 wins for Middlesbrough and Walsall. They were mfb_cufc, who also had three outcomes, to give him a useful 9 points, and Daniel, who also had two outcomes, to give him an excellent 8 points. Best of those to get one 3 pointer was unitedwhites, the Stevenage 2-1, and five outcomes, to give him an excellent 8 points.

Happy Cup With the 3rd Round of the FA Cup not until the 11th January, the details for the quarter-finals will be on a separate thread sometime at the end of December.

U'sual Champions League Only 2 weeks and 13 games to go before we know who this seasons qualifiers are. The member currently in the important eleventh, and final, qualifying place is Sector4 with his 78 points, but with four members within 4 points of this total, qualifying looks like going down to this last game of Week 21.

In the Premier As we have reached the halfway stage of the season, it is congratulations to blueeagle on being the first one to reach a century of points. This keeps on track to reach the magic 200 points for the season, and by having the Barnsley 2-1 spot-on this week, he is also on track to break the record for 3 pointers in a season of 39. That spot-on was required to keep his run at the top going, as mfb_cufc continued his good recent run, by reducing his lead to 2 points. The excellent week for Daniel continued his good run, and keeps him well in sight of the top two. A decent week for basher2010, that included having the Middlesbrough 1-0 spot-on, moves him up a place to fourth. Four outcomes could not stop thrillseeker dropping to fifth, his lowest position since Week 2. It is an 8 point gap back to Sector4 in sixth, and he is now heading the group fighting to avoid the drop. The top scoring performance from oxfcolu moved out of the bottom three once again, as he has been doing the Hockey Cokey with ghughes11 over the last five weeks, where they have been taking turns of being in and out of the relegation zone. Another decent week for burnsieespana, who had the Stevenage 2-1 spot-on, contines to give him hope of avoiding the drop. Four outcomes for concordman leaves him 13 points from safety.

In Division One Over the last few seasons this league has had close run affairs, but as we reach the halfway stage of this season, it has never been as close as this. For the tenth time we have a new leader, with bwildered taking his personal total to four. His decent week, that included having the Barnsley 2-1 spot-on, moved him up three places, to take over at the top for the fourth time this season. It is only on the most 3 pointer rule from noah4x4 and Lewis_1, who both had three outcomes, along with Tropical_Us, who remains a point off the top three in fourth. Five outcomes for durham_exile helped him join in the fun, just a further point back in fifth, and Jorash63 continued his good recent run, with a solid 5 points, after having the Middlesbrough 1-0 spot-on, to move within 3 points of the top, in the final play-off place. The performance of note from the rest of the league came from BFG, whose decent week moved him up a couple of places, as he was another to get the Middlesbrough 1-0 spot-on.

THE TABLES (137 out of 280 played)
(Tie-breaker: Most 3 pointers, and then the first to post)

Week 20 Fixtures This is now a 7 game week to make up for the postponed fixture in Week 18.

Week 18 results

HULL CITY 0 BLACKBURN ROVERS 1

Hull's new manager Ruben Selles watched from the stands as his side dropped to the foot of the Championship after a sixth defeat on the trot, to in-form Blackburn, who made it four wins in a row. A sublime 5 got this spot-on, and a further 11 had the outcome.

QUEENS PARK RANGERS 3 NORWICH CITY 0
Teenager Rayan Kolli's first senior goals helped QPR to their first home win this season. No points for anyone from this game, as 18 predicted a win for Norwich, with 9 going for a 2-1 in what was the weeks most predicted score.

BARNSLEY 1 BIRMINGHAM CITY 2
Birmingham top scorer Jay Stansfield scored twice as they came back from a goal down to beat 10-man Barnsley. A great 8 got this spot-on, and another 7 had the outcome.

CRAWLEY TOWN v STEVENAGE POSTPONED Due to Storm Darragh

HARROGATE TOWN 0 AFC WIMBLEDON 3
Wimbledon climbed into the League Two play-off places courtesy of this comprehensive victory. Nobody had this spot-on, but 15 did get the outcome.

SWINDON TOWN 3 FLEETWOOD TOWN 1
Harry Smith grabbed the 'perfect' hat-trick to lift struggling Swindon off the bottom of League Two with this comfortable victory. Nobody got this spot-on, though 6 did have the outcome.

Storm Darragh claimed one of this weeks fixtures, and made it farcical conditions for the other five. At least it helped QPR to get a first home win since April, and a first win for Swindon manager Ian Hollaway, with Harry Smith realising it is more fun scoring at the right end. Those two wins made for it being another tough week, with three games failing to have a 3 pointer. At least the other two had 13 between them. Only two members managed to get both those 3 pointers. They were concordman, who also had the Wimbledon outcome, to make him this weeks top scorer with a decent 7 points, and mfb_cufc, to give him a useful 6 points. Best of those to get one 3 pointer was ghughes11. who had the Birmingham 2-1, and three outcomes, to give a decent 6 points.
Week 20 will now be a 7 game week to make up for the postponed game in Week 18.

U'sual Champions League Just 3 weeks and 23 games to go now before we know who this seasons qualifiers are. The member currently in that eleventh, and final, qualifying spot is currently wessex_exile with his 73 points.

In the Premier Two outcomes for blueeagle were always going to be enough to keep him top for another week, but his lead was cut to 5 points, as mfb_cufc continues to close in. Another solid week for Daniel, that included having the Blackburn 1-0 spot-on, moves him up another place to third. A first blank since Week 5 in the 2021/22 season (an incredible 127 weeks without one) for thrillseeker, drops him a place to fourth. Two outcomes for Sector4 moves him up a place, and back into the top half, as he takes advantage of a rare blank for RSCOSWORTH. At the bottom, the decent week for ghughes11 moves him out of the relegation zone again, as he replaced by oxfcolu once again. Another solid week for burnsieespana, that had the Birmingham 2-1 spot-on, moves him ever closer to escaping. Could this be the week when current champ concordman finally turns a corner, as his top scoring performance gives him hope of avoiding the drop.

In Division One Three outcomes for noah4x4 were enough to keep him top for a fourth week, but for the second week running it was only on the most 3 pointer rule from Lewis_1, who moved up another place into that other automatic spot. Two outcomes for Tropical_Us drops him a place third, but only a point further back. No change for bwildered and durham_exile, as they remain fourth and fifth. Another solid week for Jorash63, that included having the Blackburn 1-0 spot-on, moved him up a place, and into the play-offs for the first time this season. A great effort from him after only being twelfth three weeks ago. After spending the last seven weeks in the top six wessex_exile drops a place to seventh. The rest of the league remains the same as last week.

THE TABLES (127 out of 280 played)
(Tie-breaker: Most 3 pointers, and then the first to post)

Week 19 Fixtures 10 games picked by this weeks guest unitedwhites. Don't forget it is an early start with the deadline 12.30.

An entertaining (or scathing if you support Swindon) report on the game from the Swindon Advertiser.

Swindon Town were thoroughly embarrassed on the road as they were roundly beaten 4-0 at the hands of fellow strugglers Colchester United.

The first half was like something out of a twisted nightmare as Harry Smith’s own goal was swiftly followed by a Samson Tovide brace and Jack Payne pouring an immense amount of suffering on Town.

Swindon were allowed the mercy of wallowing in their mess in the second half as both teams lost the will to apply full force.

Following a sixth game without a win, Swindon sit bottom of the fourth tier of English football for the very first time.

Ian Holloway was surprisingly light on tinkering for the visit to The JobServe Community Stadium, making just one enforced change from the weekend. Despite many of this line-up having played a punishing 120 minutes just three days ago, Joel Cotterill was the only difference to Accrington Stanley.

Following an opening ten minutes which saw little in the way of action, it was the same, old story which saw Colchester take the lead. Yet another early corner drifted into the middle where Tovide met it and his header struck Smith and flew into the net.

Before having time to process yet another set-piece goal going in against them, Colchester had a second. Slack play on the edge of the area from Ryan Delaney allowed Payne to steal in on Jack Bycroft. He cut the ball across for the waiting Tovide to send the ball into the empty goal.

Rocked by the start, the confidence in the Swindon players looked to be drained beyond zero. Colchester sat back, happy to absorb the passive passing and spring their counterattacks, which all looked more dangerous than anything Town could muster.

Holloway, Marcus Bignot, and Gavin Gunning seemed the sense the inspiration might have to come from them and were locked in a lengthy discussion before the clock even read 20 minutes about how to turn the ship around.

But before those talks of how to get out of the hole came to a conclusion, it was even deeper. A Swindon long through was launched into Colchester shins allowing Owura Edwards to get away down the left. He jinked beyond Tunmise Sobowale and cut the ball back for Tovide to slot home his second.

With less than half an hour on the clock, Paul Glatzel was summoned with Delaney making way as Town shifted to an even more gung-ho 424.

This made little to no difference as the play was equally lacking in bite and invention, with nobody in the stadium even considering that Swindon might be capable of a comeback.

Before the break, the embarrassment reached truly epic proportions as Tovide bullied Wright to win the ball high up, ran away from Grant Hall down the side and then rolled the ball across goal for Payne to slide home.

In 145 years of Swindon’s history, there couldn’t have been too many 45 minutes which were packed with more misery than the four goals and hitting the bottom of the fourth tier for the first time which had unfolded.

A triple change at halftime saw Joel McGregor, Rosaire Longelo, and Harrison Minturn handed the unenviable task of sparking football’s most unlikely comeback.

With Colchester understandably easing up with another game on Saturday, Swindon were able to create something after the break. Cotterill rifled a strike over the top with the help of a deflection and Aaron Drinan flashed a shot into the side netting but still the menace only belonged to The U's.

Any moments when Swindon showed a flash of quality were swiftly followed by Colchester strolling back in and easing them off the ball like a dad playing with his child in the garden.

It was a night that even before the goals started cascading in looked to not be going right but this was truly a debacle. Playing against a side who are struggling towards the bottom of League Two with them and Town beat in the FA Cup just a month ago, the gulf in quality couldn’t have been more vast. Without having to get beyond the first few gears, Colchester were winning the simplest points of their campaign and firing a harpoon into Swindon’s.

The seeds of the fear of relegation out of the EFL, which were first planted last year, have continued to grow untamed into a great big oak tree in the corner at Swindon. You can’t look anywhere else. A slow start has turned into a malaise and now a full-blown end-of-days crisis. Town are not in danger of going down, it quite simply seems to be the most likely outcome unless the course corrects rather drastically.

CUFC starting XI: Macey, Iandolo, Flanagan, Tovide, Payne, Gordon, McDonnell, Read, Egbo, Edwards, Donnelly.

CUFC substitutes: Smith, Kelleher, Bishop, Hunt, Woodyard, Thorn, Taylor.

STFC starting XI: Bycroft, Sobowale, Delaney, Wright, Cotterill, Smith, Kilkenny, Tshimanga, Drinan, Hall, Cox.

STFC substitutes: Barden, Ofoborh, Glatzel, McGurk, Longelo, Minturn, McGregor.

Attendance: 3,401 (170 away).

Week 17 results

BRENTFORD 4 LEICESTER CITY 1

New Leicester manager Ruud van Nistelrooy watched Kevin Schade net a hat-trick as Brentford thumped the Foxes to underline the size of the task he faces. Nobody got this spot-on, but 22 did have the outcome, with 12 going for a 2-1 in what was the weeks most predicted score.

CRYSTAL PALACE 1 NEWCASTLE UNITED 1
Daniel Munoz scored a 94th minute equaliser as Palace moved out of the bottom three. Newcastle registered just one attempt at goal – and none on target, with their goal being an O G. That late goal was good news for the 5 who had this spot-on, and nobody got the outcome. 18 predicted a win for Newcastle.

WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS 2 AFC BOURNEMOUTH 4
Justin Kluivert became the first player in 67 years to score a hat-trick of penalties in an English top-flight game as his treble saw off Wolves and piled the pressure on their boss Gary O'Neil. Nobody got this spot-on, and only 3 had the outcome.

COVENTRY CITY 2 CARDIFF CITY 2
Victor Torp’s 88th minute penalty salvaged a draw for Frank Lampard in his first game in charge of Coventry. A final game this week with no 3 pointer, and again only 3 got the outcome. 21 predicted a win for Coventry.

STOKE CITY 0 BURNLEY 2
Burnley moved back into the Championship's automatic promotion spots with this comfortable victory. 3 got this spot-on. and a further 16 had the outcome.

SWANSEA CITY 2 PORTSMOUTH 2
Swansea fought back from 2-0 down to claim a draw against bottom club Portsmouth. Again 3 had this spot-on, and one more got the outcome. 20 predicted a win for Swansea.

Another week to go into the unpredictable results file, as only Brentford and Burnley managed to win out of the weeks five "good things". Although their victories could only produce three 3 pointers between them. It was left to the draws at Palace and Swansea to get us up to 11 spot-ons in total for the week. Well done to Moor_Pinot for being the only one to get two 3 pointers, the Burnley 2-0 and the Swansea 2-2, to give him a decent 6 points. He has to share the honour of being the weeks top scorer with Lewis_1, who came out best of those to have one 3 pointer, the Palace 1-1, and three outcomes, to give him a decent 6 points.
After going 108 games without a 2-2, with 2 more this week, that now makes it 4 in the last 14 games. In fact since I looked on how the season was going in Week 9, the draws have really picked up, so much that we have had 21 since then, the same as the number of homes in that time. The 122 games so far this season have now finished with 51 (41.80%) homes, 37 (30.33%) aways and 34 (27.87%) draws. Figures that are very much at historical levels. The 1-1 continues to be the top result with 19, that is 4 more the 2-0, that continues to be the top result for a home. Best result for an away is the 0-1 with 9.

In the Premier Seven members in this league were grateful for the Brentford and Burnley wins giving them two outcomes, and 2 points. One of them was blueeagle, but he also had the Coventry outcome, to increase his lead by that point. A solid 5 points for Daniel, that included having the Palace 1-1 spot-on, enabled him to take advantage of all those around him getting 2 points. At the bottom, by having the Swansea 2-2 spot-on, to give him a solid 5 points, oxfcolu moved out of the relegation zone, and he is replaced again by ghughes11. A solid 5 points also for burnsieespana, who also had the Swansea 2-2 spot-on, improved his chances of avoiding the drop.

In Division One Two outcomes were enough for noah4x4 to remain top for the thitd week running, but only on the most 3 pointer rule from Tropical_Us, who closed right up, thanks to getting the Palace 1-1 spot-on. The top scoring performance moved Lewis_1 up a place to third, just a point further back. Having the Palace 1-1 spot-on also helped bwildered move up a place to fourth. One outcome for durham_exile drops him to fifth, his lowest position since Week 7. The final play-off place is still occupied by wessex_exile, as he was another to have the Brentford and Burnley outcomes. A solid 5 points for Jorash63, that included having the Burnley 2-0 spot-on, moved him up another place to seventh, and within a point of the play-offs. The top scoring performance from Moor_Pinot, moved him up a couple of places, and within sight of the play-offs.

THE TABLES (122 out of 280 played)
