Ref (Michael Oliver) needed VAR to tell him this was a red card!!

Schumacher never even got booked so I guess Oliver wanted to be sure (maybe they have to watch it anyway even if they know in their mind it’s a red)

I think that one is worse. I mean Schumacher meant his one and it was a disgrace but this one honestly could have killed the guy. The most reckless challenge I think I have ever seen on a football pitch. And I've seen a lot.

Never knowingly right.

Gets worse everytime you watch it.
Surely a lengthy ban for that one.

I remember it well . Never apologised for the serious injuries he caused Battiston .
Very poor challenge by the Millwall keeper. Horrible

I appreciate I might be in a minority on this but I don’t see why it should merit more than a straight red usually would. It’s a mad challenge to make in 2025 but nothing more IMO.

The chanting isn’t nice but then football isn’t nice and nor should it be up to a point.

I have only watched a pretty poor quality video but it looks like he kicked him and also hit him with his forearm following through .
Not sure if it was a dirty violent hit or just a savage collision but either way could have been really dangerous hope that Palace striker is ok.

He had a quiet word in his ear afterwards, but the trouble was that the ear was 6ft away from the rest of him.

Thing is Schumacher wasn't even booked and I don't think it was given as a foul either.

Appreciate the goalkeeper was focused on the ball, which a moment before he caught Mateta, he touched the ball, but feet that high and so fat outside the area, that's going to be a nine game ban at least and deservedly so.

The Millwall "fans" singing let him die.

Not sure how true fans of Millwall football club, feel about these idiots that seem to be attracted to their club, but definitely not for footballing reasons !!!

Their goalkeeper keeping to the memo then...

Horrific is the word !!

The Germans were given a goal kick if I remember the Schumacher incident properly. Watching it at the time (one of the most thrilling games I’ve ever seen), it didn’t seem that outlandish at the time, perhaps because I was following the ball. Replays told a different story!

Mateta fouled his man, free kick to Millwall!

Apparently Barton has tweeted that it was a good tackle and not even a foul.

Schumacher was nowhere near the ball and made a conscious decision to clatter the man for no apparent reason.

Millwall keeper is focused on the ball and purely thinking about clearing it. Careless, reckless absolutely but I don’t think eight minutes into probably the biggest game in his life he’s decided to take an opponent’s head off. Not in the same league as Schumacher for me.

Ok how about next time you play a 5 a side or 11 a side game or your kid plays in one and the opposition puts in a challenge like this… we just say red card but fair play?

No, there should be consequences to such a challenge so as to deter anyone else to do something similar

I wouldn’t want to play thinking opposition can ruin my health with one challenge and only get a red card

Mateta could’ve been even more serious injured than he was if his head was in a different position, maybe even blinded. It was a reckless and dangerous tackle, and how would he have felt if the boot was on the other head and it was his head involved?
It certainly warrants more than a 3 match ban.

You go into any football match with a degree of risk. I’ve played in goal and clattered people (not quite like that with studs). I’ve had strikers dive in recklessly knowing I’m sliding in to take a ball with my hands/chest. The whole ‘you wouldn’t like it if it happened to your child’ argument is just dumb. It’ll probably get a longer ban because it’s got a lot of noise and on TV. If it was Morecambe v Salford I doubt anyone cares.
