I have only watched a pretty poor quality video but it looks like he kicked him and also hit him with his forearm following through .

The Germans were given a goal kick if I remember the Schumacher incident properly. Watching it at the time (one of the most thrilling games I’ve ever seen), it didn’t seem that outlandish at the time, perhaps because I was following the ball. Replays told a different story!

Schumacher was nowhere near the ball and made a conscious decision to clatter the man for no apparent reason.
Millwall keeper is focused on the ball and purely thinking about clearing it. Careless, reckless absolutely but I don’t think eight minutes into probably the biggest game in his life he’s decided to take an opponent’s head off. Not in the same league as Schumacher for me. | | | |

Mateta could’ve been even more serious injured than he was if his head was in a different position,maybe even blinded.It was a reckless and dangerous tackle,and how would he have felt if the boot was on the other head and it was his head involved?

You go into any football match with a degree of risk. I’ve played in goal and clattered people (not quite like that with studs). I’ve had strikers dive in recklessly knowing I’m sliding in to take a ball with my hands/chest. The whole ‘you wouldn’t like it if it happened to your child’ argument is just dumb. It’ll probably get a longer ban because it’s got a lot of noise and on TV. If it was Morecambe v Salford I doubt anyone cares. | | | |
