1. Steingarten
2: Cricketers
3. Painted Wagon

Trying a different one on Saturday, so will see how that is….

I do like the Five Rivers a lot, though don’t think that could be classed as City Centre….

Good idea to keep it to yourself as being the most famous Saints fan the pub will become mobbed with people hoping to get a selfie

Slug & Lettuce 2 4 1 cocktails.
Mayflower Village excellent lagers.
O’Neills for its Hearty Breakfast.

The best matchday pub is 5 Rivers now Bedfords is no more.
No piss taking beer prices.
Lots of room.
Loads of screens for the tv games.
Bands on post match.
Food is top notch.

We thought that we had the answers, It was the questions we had wrong.

Both cracking boozers (never been in The Guide Dog though).

Have had a few in the Book Shop mind(same neck of the woods) which has some decent ales on.

For those wanting ‘bands’ and decent lager post match, get to the fanzones as I believe they have both?!?!

There’s no decent lager at St Mary’s Stadium.
To knacker lager takes some doing.
Usually it’s dirty lines or dirty glasses.
Which one it is at St Mary’s is anyone’s guess.

Guide Dog is my favourite boozer in southampton, it's basically someone's living room that serves exceptionally good beer, kept by people who know how to look after beer properly and full of people who like good beer.

It's no frills, no fuss, doesn't do TV's, and doesn't do food most of the time, exactly how a boozer should be really.

I still like the Red Lion. I stayed in Southampton for the first time in years this time last year, saw something at the Mayflower and stayed at the White Star Tavern (which was really nice), but my wife and I spent the evening in the Red Lion with the locals, most enjoyable.

But I'm so out of touch with the rest of town.

Some interesting selections there, some I agreed with and others I didn't think were quite so good.

In General I think that the manufactured theme type pubs are the worst, Steingarten, Yates, Grumpy Monkey, in fact most of those bard around Guildhall square are atrocious with the only redeeming quality being that some have cheap drinks offers.

The City centre as a whole lacks decent pubs and we have lost a lot of old school pubs in the last 15 years or so.

Carlton Place has reinvented itself and has a number of decent pubs, some too small and busy for their own goods

Like the Red Lion for the beers, and useful for 1865, but di find the locals not always so welcoming to non locals.
Mine hosts decent though

London Road Brewhouse is my ‘go to’ for a decent pint when I’m over on a match day. Their pizzas are pretty good too. When I lived locally I’d get off the train at St Denys and loved popping into The South Western Arms for a couple of pre-match beers. Decent beer garden out the back too when the weather’s good.

Agree totally re: manufactured boozers. Try to avoid Grumpy Monkey and the like where possible. The only boozer around Guildhall Sq. I do pop into occasionally is Belgium and Blues. Hadn’t been there for a while but just noticed last week that the Angel has closed again.

If you’re gonna drink in places like Grumpy Monkey almost just as well drink in the Gulags

Cannot remember the last pint I had at the ground tbh as the stuff on offer is poor.

As for the Fanzones would rather rub me bollöx up and down a cheese grater

I quite like Steingarten and wouldn't put it with the likes of Yates but the city centre is a bit barren for decent pubs.

Last time I was in the Guide Dog, my old Fremch teacher from school was in there and he recognised me and pointed and shouted "RIGHT WINGER!" I was a bit shocked as I am quite the opposite and so is he, but he couldn't remember my name and was just referring to my position on the football pitch (got that wrong as well as I was left)

Carlton Crescent has some decent pubs but as Nick said, they are pretty small and get heaving.

Reading this post I was trying to work out why I don't like the Steingarten and then it hit me it's a manufactured German bar ( No Germans appear to be actually involved in this) but it is very similar to Gulag 1 or to give it it's more common name The Northam Fanzone.

It's an oblong concrete box , a load of benches in front of a TV screen at one end topped off with overpriced beer & food, although the beer is a bit better than the fanzone.

It's ok to meet up as there is usually a lot of benches available, but there are a lot better pubs in the area

It’s a bar that sells German beer.

Krombacher is a decent German lager.

Does that make it manufactured????

Personally I think it’s an absolute world away from the gulags.
