Here is a very interesting article in the New Stateman for those interested in politics. The fate of "Blue Labour" is a sad story for many of us who moved away from the Party as the woke tendency came to the forefront. Now, with Reform on the rise, people are talking about the ideas again, but as Maurice Glasman (one of the Blue Labour originals) says in an interview in the article there is the likelihood that the label is used but the policies do not follow, as happened before.

Surely Rachel Reeves position is becoming untenable, after her cv was exaggerated, saying she was employed for 10 years when she only spent 5 at the Bank of England.
And her profile on linked in was changed this morning just before the BBC reported she left the Bank in 2006 |  |

No, I am afraid you have this wrong. "Progress" was formed in 1996 to support policy development for Blair, and is basically a New Labour faction within the party, which as you suggest stands in opposition to the harder left Momentum group (Corbyn etc). New Labour has often been criticised as representing a takeover of traditional Labour (yet another faction) by middle class, and particularly public sector professional supporters. Blue Labour was created in the early 2000s by Glasman and others who opposed both these tendencies. It argued that Labour had moved away from its old working class base and was dismissive of that base's culture and patriotic values. Blue Labour is pro-Brexit, anti-mass immigration , tough on crime, and against government by woke lawyers such as Hermer. It looks towards Karl Polanyi (The Great Transformation) rather than Karl Marx for inspiration. Here is some blurb about he movement,

If you read what Glasman said in the OP link you'll see that he is probably as critical of present government policies as you are. Many years ago Ed Miliband was an early supporter, but is widely perceived to have offered false promises on which he failed to deliver.

Blue Labour featured in “The Story” on Times Radio today, with an item on: “The Labour politician who inspired JD Vance” (Feb 21, 2025). This refers to the fact that Maurice Glasman was the only Labour politician invited to Trump’s inauguration, and might be a better point of connection for Labour with the US administration than Farage. This idea will probably turn off many forum readers, but it is worth listening to the podcast to understand the context.

There is an interesting angle on how Vance started as a left-leaning author (Hillbilly Elegy) interested in the impoverishment of “rust belt” communities, who corresponded with Glasman, but gave up on his attempt to reform the Democratic Party on Blue Labour lines to instead flip across to the populism of MAGA. The rise of Reform has seen the Conservatives question for a while now who they are and what are they for, and it seems that it’s Labour’s turn now to do the same.
It might take some time as although there’s a lot of Blue Labour that’s appealing, I think it’s hard for them to find traction when there’s not money to spend. | | | |
