So is Fernandes any good?
I hope so but we don't need another lad who has potential but then to be told he's not ready for PL yet and that we can't rely on him to play too many games etc etc. We have lot of those already.

Apparently he's superb when it comes to playing a through ball & splitting defences with his passing. He's great on the counter attack when it comes to getting the ball forward quickly with his superb passing.

Which all means RM will probably play him at wing back...

Who's he going to play the ball through to? We don't have a centre forward. So, now we've got Cameron Archer, who's scored 4 goals in 39 Premier League games and Mateus Fernandes who's scored 1 goal in 33 games in the Portuguese league and no goalscorer. Why couldn't we have spent the money on a centre forward instead? That's what we need, along with a goalkeeper, of course; not a whole squad full of midfielders who don't score goals.

A friend of mine is from Lisbon and flys back to watch his beloved Benfica regularly - usually about 10 games a season. So, I have asked him the obvious question - is he any good? Turns out he was out on loan all of last season at Estoril and in Jose’s opinion he was the main reason Estoril managed to avoid relegation, he made enough of a difference to get them over the line and was their stand out player. Estoril survived by 1 point in a very tight bottom six where only 1 point separated 4 teams 13th > 16th with 17th & 18th adrift. He also said the stats don’t tell the whole story (2 goals &1 assist) as Estoril’s forwards couldn’t hit a cow’s backside with a banjo! Estoril only scored 33 in 34 games, in a team with a decent forward line his assists would be in double figures. Also pointed out they like to play sideways a lot (sound familiar? 😀) My final question was how will he get on in the PL? The reply I got was he’d tear up the Champoinship but 50/50 on the PL but he has a lot of promise. Jose likened it to the same situation as the likes of Lavia, Palmer ect were in at City, good players, lots of potential but no route through to the first team so they get let go. Apparently this is the same for Fernandez at Sporting CP. Reckons had he been at 15 or 16 other top flight clubs they would not have considered selling, only really CP, Benfica and possibly Porto that would sell on. So there you go, that’s from a big fan of Portuguese footie.
