Simon Gauge on Radio Manchester 17:40 - Mar 25 with 14020 views | 442Dale | Anyone hear the full interview before the game? They played a clip not long ago, saying there would be a total review of our football operations. Oh yeah? Fancy giving us more detailed information via the club’s own media channels rather than random interviews on the radio?

Simon Gauge on Radio Manchester on 22:13 - Mar 25 by 49thseason | Easy, they have been let down too many times in the past. Big clubs have won things, they have heroes to tell stories about, internationals galore. Going to the match is embedded in their DNA. We have never won anything. its always been "after the Lord Mayors show" (you know, all that's left is manure). They have always managed to disappoint one way or another. get a brilliant win away on Saturday, lose 3-0 at home on Tuesday and vice versa. People just were either never interested or got fed up and found something else to do, those who remained (me) have a screw loose. |
Being perfectly honest, the last paragraph is exactly where I am, in recent seasons I've gone less and less and all the time purely through choice, not really much to do with finances for me, ive just found there's FAR better things to do on a weekend than pay to knowingly be pissed off come 5pm. I found the more I knew about the goings on at the club and the way they've treated the paying customer and the absolute shambles behind the scenes, sadly the less I wanted to know. I've done my time, earnt my stripes, got the scars too as we all have I'm nothing special in that, but I can honestly say it wouldn't really bother me not stepping foot in the ground again, it's a habit that I've found's very easy to get out of, the club could really do to take note, not that they will mind they're seemingly on a rudderless blindfolded journey to oblivion. Simon Gauge on Radio Manchester on 22:44 - Mar 25 with 3291 views | 442Dale | It’s simple and been repeated time and again: the culture has never changed year on year, era on era. The club always thought they knew better, whether things were great on the pitch or really rubbish. They’ve been allowed to get away with it far too much, partly because any sort of accountability structure towards fans has been inconsistent and sporadic. It’s not always been a consciously negative view on accepting where they could improve, but sometimes not even realising there’s a culture like that is worse than actually letting it exist knowingly. The rest is mere details.

Simon Gauge on Radio Manchester on 22:24 - Mar 25 by James1980 | How do the scales tip? |
Easy, when the negative outweighs the positive. Just for good measure, if anyones unsure about attending until the day of the match the £23 or whatever it is does a great job at tipping them scales.

Simon Gauge on Radio Manchester on 20:52 - Mar 25 by D_Alien | There's a great deal of truth in that When SG and his fellow directors put their personal finances on the line to save the club in its hour of need, we were all so grateful that none of us looked at this as they portrayed themselves - a group of fans, with some business experience but nothing in terms of footballing experience People who now disrespect them, and the obvious mistakes they've made, should be fully aware of this, but still the expletives keep coming Their managerial appointments were made in all good faith. They didn't work, but we're also seeing expletives and childish name-calling directed at Jim Bentley, who hasn't been able to turn the team round but has been doing his level best and doesn't deserve abuse for his efforts. We can all point to mistakes in team selection, but does that deserve being called a c**t? A complete reset is needed, and the forthcoming meetings are an opportunity for fans to put positive points forward. It's all we can do, right now, since we're not in a position to call the shots |
That was the worst performance I think I’ve ever seen and I like others have seen some p1ss poor performances over the years. Absolutely gutless all they way the way through the team and from where I was stood Bentley didn’t appear to be offering anything from the touch line either. Any self respecting person would fall on their sword and walk but this is football and they still want their £’s of flesh. Re the BoD these are well meaning fans with little experience of running a football club. They do it on a voluntary basis, as have most over the years, but they can be removed. It happened 2 years ago and if the fans want it then it can happen again. If enough fans want it then those most critical can put themselves forward and hopefully do a better job. Lets hope the BoD show some balls and get rid but who will want to take the job on ?
Simon Gauge on Radio Manchester on 10:54 - Mar 26 with 2824 views | EllDale | If the manager is going to have his services dispensed with then there needs to be a clear timetable in the mind of the board. There has to be time for an exhaustive recruitment process to find his successor bearing in mind that player recruitment will have to be made in June and early July before the team come back for training. The squad needs to be more or less in place by then so that it’s gelled by the time the season starts. No more dithering and appointments made in July. [Post edited 26 Mar 2023 11:04]

I don,t disagree with your sentiments but unfortunately in June we will almost certainly still have the problem of the 2 year contracts dished out by RS. I would like to think that there are clauses in those contracts that give us wiggle room to shed those ongoing wage costs but I would,nt be certain about anything at the club after the Brierley debacle. Does anyone know if the likes of Ball and John are actually training with the club anymore? I would like to think that when JB finally departs we will get his version of events on some of the bizarre goings on at the club in recent times. As mentioned the absence of Brierley after the move fell through, the perserverance with Eastwood which became embarrassing to witness, the Adshead debacle, the training on Thursdays pantomime, the club announcements of initiatives not followed through, clarity on what was the precise nature of Morton Houses litigation regarding the share issue ie were the board badly advised wherupon their hands where forced regarding the buying back of the MH shares? Having listened to the SG interview I,m fearful that we are on a Scunthorpe type trajectory and will be in another scrap at the bottom next season. I very much doubt that SG is enjoying his tenure and the touting of the club is one obvious exit strategy whilst minimising his financial losses. If that is the case, who could blame him. One point made by SG in the interview was his comparison of National League clubs ongoing financial deficits and ours being similar. Quite, but he did,nt address the obvious loss of revenue going forward from the EFL, commercial activities etc which over time we will face. Unless we cut our cloth to suit then the comparison is hardly valid. I like JB. I like him because of his passion and commitment but the line we have been unlucky with decisions as a validation of our position is just ridiculous. I could equally point out the softest of penalties that got us back in the game at Valley Parade. Whether you think SG,s latest idea of rule by committee is a good or bad thing, the notion of a Director of Football being involved with recruitment does raise the question of another wage? In a short time we have gone from the selling of homegrown talent/ cup runs through "fan owned"hyperbole to what appears to be a desperate throw of the dice to find a rich benefactor. We will need extremely good luck with the latter in the position we are in. The positioning of the prices next season will be interesting. SG in his interview seemed to imply that the committed are insensitive to cost. I find that a dangerous notion that he may well be disabused of. I will be there, but as others have already alluded to, the more I see and hear of this train crash both on and off the field, the more I question my sanity after 55 years of support. Much to agree with there BR The stuff about the committed not being price sensitive stinks of the recent (implied) attitude that we have given up on walk ups. Yes we have those wonderful committed season ticket holders each of whom deserve a medal for sticking with the rubbish they have had to watch over recent years…..but we need to think how we can attract more non committed…people who with nothing else to do on a fine saturday might think of taking in a game…..at 24 quid to watch Kings Lynn or whoever? We dont seem to be doing any marketing so why do we employ people with this responsibilty. I am no longer a season ticket holder because I dont live in or close to the town. But I buy tickets for the games I am able to attend on line. I am also a long term shareholder. I have never received any communication from the club enticing me to attend a game, or other event.

With the greatest respect, you're letting the malaise of the last six seasons cloud your judgement there. In the last 15 years, we've had two play-off campaigns, two promotions, two Wembley visits, held Man U, Spurs and Newcastle to draws, done the double over Southampton, knocked Leeds and Forest out of the FA Cup, seen more ex-players perform to high standards in the top flight than ever before, finished in our highest-ever league position; and there will be others if we think hard enough. Yes, league form has been terrible since 2017 - and particularly so this season - but to say 'they have ALWAYS managed to disappoint' is hyperbole and inaccurate. [Post edited 26 Mar 2023 13:38]

The elephant in the room is that Jim also has a two year contract. Do we know whether a relegation clause was inserted into his contract. I can't imagine that Jim will have too many job offers flying his way this summer, so he will take a lot of shifting. I wouldn't assume that Jim will be on his way at the end of this season. If he is still here, how many season tickets will be sold? I think the club needs to look at slashing its fixed costs now - office staff, admin bods, etc. - to avoid running out of cash halfway through next season.

With equal amounts of respect - I’d say with the exception of the Hill tenures, we have always promised then disappointed. I remember winning for the first time ever in London beat Barnet 4-0 if memory serves me, I recall we lost the home game by the same margin; classic Rochdale. Liverpool in the cup - take 7,000 fans and get hammered 7-0. We’ve never built a sustained head of steam and kept it up, even the promotion seasons, we fizzled out and came third, remember those big followings at Notts and Newport - great days out but we didn’t press the advantage and win anything did we. We’ve not built our fan base on success, what we have is despite failing to win anything.

The problem being that you are looking at it through the prism of a long term supporters like us, not a casual attendee . People turn up to watch Tottenham or Newcastle but those day-trippers are never there the following week for the game against run-of -the -mill opposition. Much as we value the big games, they have not been frequent enough to provoke more people to join us on wet Tuesday nights, and they know that the one swallow doesn't make a summer. They know we will sell our best players (especially goal scorers) and most promising kids. they are never going to buy a season ticket and the POTD price is a scandal. we took 17,000 or so to the Wembley play off final in 2008, did we have noticeably more fans the next season? Yes, all of 165, the equivalent of filling the Willbuts Lane stand once! 10/11 League One 3,537 09/10 League Two 3,446 08/09 League Two 3,222 07/08 League Two 3,057 an increase of 480 in 4 relatively good seasons and only 1% of the 17,000 in the season following the Wembley game. "We can confirm that Rochdale AFC’s average attendance for the 2018/19 season reached at 47-year high. The average crowd at the Crown Oil Arena, over our 23 Sky Bet League One matches, was 3,574" So an increase of only 37 in the following 7 seasons after promotion to L1 I was trying to answer the question posed by James , "why don't more people watch Rochdale" and its because we are generally disappointing. When was the last time anyone scored a hat trick? Hogan? When did we last batter anyone 4,5,6 nil? We have to put a product on the pitch that causes excitement. Stockport have scored over 100 more goals than us in the last 100 games, we are struggling to score 1 per game! Its essentially crap, people wont pay for it, no matter how good the offer. Please, dump Bentley and the "lets not get beaten" mentality and find a Bielsa or a Begara and do things differently like scoring loads of goals and winning, there is nothing to lose now.

“I was trying to answer the question posed by James , "why don't more people watch Rochdale" and its because we are generally disappointing.” Yet over a decade we weren’t “generally disappointing” and the crowds only increased by the numbers you posted. So it isn’t because of that at all as you’ve illustrated. It’s because of everything that’s been said for the last 15+ years. The culture of the club combined with a potential fan base that has to be engaged with much better.

No, I wasn't looking at it through the prism of being a long term supporter. Your comment said we 'always' let people down, which is plainly untrue and I produced evidence to back it up. I have no answer to James's question, as it's not an exact science. I do agree that the club have never done enough to keep people who turn up for the one-off games, but it's not through the want of some of us trying to help them over many years. You have often posted some really good marketing ideas on here about what could be tried and I have suggested you take them to the club or the Trust and see where it gets you. (especially as I think you once said you were retired and had more time than others - apologies if that wasn't you) Of course, this might get you nowhere and at least then you know where you stand, but you've never told us if you did it. You're right, the product has been poor and we do need entertaining. A manager like Bergara would bring back the fun and entertainment factor (although the average home crowd in his season was around 1000 less than it is now), but not the wins, which is the main currency for a lot of people. Stockport have had (and are still getting) big investment and scored a lot of those goals in the National League, so I'm not sure why they're being used as a comparison. They are also currently playing their first EFL season since 2011, during which time we've done most of the things I listed. Last hat-trick, by the way, was Henderson v Gillingham in September 2018 and our last 5-0 win was at Wigan in December 2020. Have all other clubs been banging in loads of 4-0 and 5-0 wins on a regular basis in the meantime and have their players been scoring hat-tricks for fun, or is it just us? Simon Gauge on Radio Manchester on 18:19 - Mar 26 by TVOS1907 | No, I wasn't looking at it through the prism of being a long term supporter. I wrote to the trust rep on the board never got a reply, and have spoken to SG a couple of times, it was me who suggested turning one of the kitchens into a "dark Kitchen" that did take-aways (purely for delivery) , the potential was quite high given the 2 or 3000 fans who might have used it for starters. That was what brought about the revelation that there was no gas and BG wanted £30k to put it in... There were a couple of other ideas that I shared here that the marketing team had a rather half hearted go at, Christmas parties being one, but starting selling them in November was never going to work. I suspect there is a lot of "not invented here" going on . In 7 months we regain the Gold Bond / Lotto, it seems to me this is something we all need to get our teeth into but nothing so far.... Don't get me wrong, I am not looking for a job, but I do have experience and have done business development and management mentoring as well as sales and marketing domestic and international, I just don't have the impression anyone thinks a random supporter can help much, but then there is a similar arrogance in a lot of what the club does. That I struggled to remember the last Hattrick isn't too surprising as its 5 years ago but in 2008 (I think) we scored 5! Perkins. Le Fondre, Howe, Dagnall 2. We have to start being entertaining again, I can't stand (literally) many more seasons scoring so few goals... Memo to Board. find a manager who wants to attack and then attack some more! I don't care if the whole of English football has become a defensive wasteland, we need to break the mould and be different. Oh.. and we need to start selling the 2023 Christmas parties now! 30 x 10place tables x 18 nights at £40 per person is £216k revenue and probably £100k profit plus bar takings plus a raffle https://www.christmaspartiesunlimited.co.uk/party/1734/christmas-parties-2023-at

I've posted about uncalled-for responses, so i agree. But... It's already been pointed out that using an external medium as a means of communication when there's been erm... radio silence for weeks isn't acceptable Another factor - did Jim Bentley listen to that? I've no doubt the manager knows exactly where he stands. At the moment, he's hanging on to his job for grim life, but how do the players respond to that situation? Again, it's not acceptable

Interesting that one of them is the brother of a former employee. Probably a little more ITK than most on here? The club is dying in front of us and what is anybody with any sort of power doing about it? Where the hell is The Trust? Look on their website, there’s lots of frivolous articles but the last meeting with the board post was on the 5th Jan. Talk about being fan owned. We are an absolute joke.

The Trust do indeed have to act. It’s disappointing they haven’t at least made a statement via their website already. Maybe there will be something this week after another few days of turmoil and further uncertainty after what was said yesterday. However, in all fairness, they have responded to concerns put to them last week and there will be information in their next newsletter at the start of April, as posted on here (yes, there was no reason that info couldn’t be communicated via their own social media as well) [Post edited 26 Mar 2023 20:46]

No, never received it. All i have ever received is the notification about more shares being for sale.
Simon Gauge on Radio Manchester on 20:47 - Mar 26 with 1603 views | HullDale | Its an even worse situation than expected if current suppliers / providers to the club feel they can start slagging individuals / the board off on a messageboard without fear of identification or recrimination.

I expect we'll be inundated with unfair dismissal claims then. Mr Pink is that huge success in football Matthew Southall.

Simon Gauge on Radio Manchester on 15:23 - Mar 26 by NigelWatson | The elephant in the room is that Jim also has a two year contract. |
Why did someone who failed at Fylde (potentially a league opponent next season), warrant a 2 year contract? We cant blame Robbie for that one.
