Got to be Roy Keane surely... his performance today was superb

Possession with progression.

Being honest I used to hate the guy and strangely enough thought he was massively overrated as a player too, but his honesty and views are a very refreshing change from the protected, watered down and very dull opinions of most the other pundits.

My impression of Keane as a pundit is he courts controversy, but he's entitled to do so

When people refer to Man U's sensational conclusion to their treble-winning1998/99 campaign at the Nou Camp, they tend to forget it was Keane who dragged them there, albeit missing the final through injury (largely down to his no-prisoners playing style)

Trailing after 2 early Juventus goals in the semis second leg, he imposed himself on the opposition, scoring the first and pushing his team on to win and make the final. There's few players who could've done that

He also walked out of a World Cup campaign on a matter of principle, as squad captain. Hot-headed? Yeah, and remains so. Over-rated? Nah...

I like him. Punditry needs more like him, but they just don't make them

He missed the final through getting booked in that Juventus game. He got a lot of praise for playing the way he did knowing he was going to miss the final. Here's a bit from Fergusons book

“Pounding over every blade of grass, competing as if he would rather die of exhaustion than lose, he inspired all around him. I felt it was an honour to be associated with such a player.”

Keanes response
“Stuff like that almost insults me,” Keane said. “What am I supposed to do? Give up? Not cover every blade of grass? Not do my best for my teammates? Not do my best for my club?

“To be honest, I actually get offended when people throw quotes like that at me as if I’m supposed to be honoured by it. It’s like praising the postman for delivering your letters. He’s supposed to, isn’t he? That’s his job.
My job is to try and win football matches for Man United.”

Robbie should stick that up in the dressing room. Tell the players to read it and that that s the attitude he wants from them.

It'd intimidate rather than inspire, especially young players trying to forge their own playing identity

wigibob is correct about why Keane missed that final, but he did miss a fair few games due to injuries resulting from his playing style (as well as causing opponents to miss games)

The nearest Dale have had recently would be Matty Lund, before he injured his shoulder. Before him, Shaun Reid

They're once in a generation types, at whatever level. Trying to have all players live up to that just wouldn't work, imo

I'd put him in a different category. Inspirational, certainly (coming on as sub away when 0-2 down at Accy springs to mind) but he didn't intimidate opponents by clattering into them

Gary Jones played the whole game at Accrington.

Higginbotham and Toner were our used subs.

Indeed Higgy was our great saviour that day I seem to recall. Weren't we all drenched too from the walk to Accy to raise funds for the Bowlee training facility.

Jonah was the type of midfielder who could grab a game by the scruff of its neck though. Maybe the way in which it was done differed slightly to Keane but Jonah was pretty physical and I don't think we've had anyone else who comes close for getting the team going.

As a manager Keane must have found it incredibly frustrating to work with players who's attitudes were not of a similar ilk to his.

On you tube theres a short story re Peter Crouch and Roy Keane ...i can just imagine Keane behaving like that altho Crouch appreciated the sentiment behind it

I seem to remember the Shrewsbury manager saying Jones and Cooksey were horrible to play against.

There's no doubting he pushed Dale through games over a long period of time. And did the same at Bradford

Might've expected him to take up a role in football when he'd hung his boots up, but i believe he went into care home work, which requires leadership too

One can see why Keane might've been difficult for players to cope with as a manager, after his initial success at Sunderland

Fascinating topic

.......... didn't intimidate opponents by clattering into them

And this supports the fact that neither are we. Subtract the inevitable "time-wasting" cards and we are either making an unbelievably small number of mis-timed tackles (hard to believe for such a young squad) or we are only dispossessing opponents via interceptions. More grit and "teeth" in midfield surely has to be on Robbie's wish-list come Jan?

Hmmm..

The strange thing is that the Morley/Dooley midfield combo was working nicely just a short while ago, and they were picking up more than their fair share of interceptions then getting the ball forward

It's got to be worth giving that another run out now Dooley's back in action
