Covid Postponements 12:53 - Dec 23 with 25759 views | boromat | 4 games off this weekend in League One due to Covid-19 infiltrating football club 'bubbles'. This doesn't bode well for the season I think we're lucky there's not been too many called off due to weather so far but there could be some pile up of fixtures if this is what we are to expect every week. I know there's been talking of a football circuit breaker. I'm not sure how that would work.

There's a rumour (probably originating from a fake-news Twitter account) that players will be asked to play wearing face coverings, which will bring a whole new dimension to your sporting world

The way I understood it is that elite sportsmen have to go back to school and have to have takeaway alcohol as many times per day as they want.

Its an obvious opportunity to start the first Elite Colouring Book Championship, which will enable participants to partake of judd's compulsory takeaway alcohol service No need to thank me. What are friends for, but to help in times of trouble? [Post edited 4 Jan 2021 21:48]

You can then mix with all and sundry who, having been vaccinated, may be transmitting, or not Your choice, your chances You're welcome PS: but i should add, please also take out comprehensive private healthcare insurance, so as not to become a burden on the NHS should you by any chance develop severe breathing difficulties [Post edited 4 Jan 2021 19:30]

share your criticism of 49th's post but distinguishing 'deserving' & 'undeserving' NHS patients is a slippery slope - however much you disagree with his views, every citizen's right to NHS treatment is surely its raison d'etre?

Agreed - that why we all pay into it and why its called a health system with universal coverage (nobody excluded from access to health care). As you say the slope is slippery as there is no end to the types of conditions that could be influenced by individual behaviour.

Paragraph 2, after the bullet points: "Despite being the first country in the world to begin vaccinations, the United Kingdom has fallen behind and at the current rate Phase 1 (one dose for vulnerable groups) will not be completed until late 2022. Meanwhile even on the current Government target of 1m doses a week Phase 1 will not be completed until August 2021." I'm afraid that's statistical nonsense. Just on one of those points - if the "government target" of 1m doses a week were met, those in vulnerable groups, including frontline healthcare staff (approx. 14m) would receive a first dose at least 4 months prior to August 2021. Plus, 1m doses per week is well short of the government target. As for "falling behind", Israel is widely quoted as having taken a lead, but in a population that is on a permanent 'war footing' so no great surprise. The article makes it sound as if we're lagging behind half the world. I'm afraid if the Adam Smith Institute (a normally well-respected source) can't get such basics right, they don't deserve to be taken seriously on this, which would be a shame because they make some useful points on the roll-out of the vaccine [Post edited 5 Jan 2021 13:15]

I would politely contest the 'a normally well-respected source' there DAlien. We all know we have a major disinformation problem plaguing our democracy, and quire rightly people point the finger at 'big tech' radicalising people in Facebook groups and stuff, but we never ask who funds these think tanks and why. ASI is far from the worst offender -- the Institute of Economic Affairs and the Taxpayers' Alliance are profoundly more sinister. But the reality is, few of their reports are authored by specialists in the fields in question, and when they are it's often semi-retired 'consultants' with an axe to grind and 'fringe' views which these think tanks lap up. Given few of these organisations ever show who funds them or why, we should be worried how close to government they are (and just to be clear, left leaning think tanks would cosy up to a Labour govt too, I am not being party political). 'Dark money' has more or less wrecked US democracy and we are heading the same way. Why do we need ASI pumping out these reports? Is it because they know they'll be lapped up by time-pressed, callow young journalists in desperate need of quick clickbait? Why is Rishi Sunak's right hand man in the Treasury the founder of the Taxpayers' Alliance, Matthew Elliott? What are his credentials for having that role? Is his background really appropriate for someone holding the government purse strings? Answers on a postcard! And well done DAlien for pointing out the logical doubts in ASI's argument on vaccine roll-out.

I fully agree. My reference to the ASI as a "well-respected source" dates back some considerable time, but as you rightly point out it now appears to have been 'infiltrated' (if that isn't too strong a word) by people with some kind of agenda. Given their statistical prowess, i'd suggest they'd benefit from a course of online tutoring overseen by our very own TVOS! [Post edited 5 Jan 2021 14:33]

It is an interesting report with as you say some well made points about how to increase the roll out of vaccines, but some less so reliable comments. Krafty makes an interesting point about 'think tanks' of all persuasion. I suppose they churn out reports to make themselves seem important and more likely to try and influence policy decisions. Perhaps you would like to point out the "disreputable science". Most of the information I posted was from the US CDC or do you class them as "disreputable"? Or perhaps you can offer an alternative interpretation of the CDC findings ? You may not agree with the comments of the journalist but the quote is essential a matter of mathematics not opinion. With regard to your more personal comments, you seem to have a nasty side to your personality or maybe you are just feeling a little under the weather? Still no offence taken, I didn't realise you had become the final arbiter of all things NHS and Football and now I know, have no fear, I shall continue to post my thoughts and findings. Have a nice day!

I'm feeling pretty good (almost always do), and set fair to face the tough couple of months ahead. I'll be on the case of any more disreputable science you keep on peddling - and i'm not the only one. It started with the "Vitamin D can prevent Covid" and you appear to be an absolute sucker for it I really couldn't care less whether you think that makes me 'nasty' - there's nothing more nasty than trying to influence people to do things (or not do things) which might result in harm

Covid Postponements on 17:08 - Jan 5 with 1604 views | OxDale | The science in this instance (covid vaccine trials) is fixed. It's the interpretation and representation/misrepresentation of data that is disputed. Here's a (there are several official versions) US authorisation fact sheet: http://labeling.pfizer.com/ShowLabeling.aspx?id=14471&format=pdf&#page=1 In a large clinical trial it's not unusual to have scary adverse events but you have to keep them in context. The administration of drugs and vaccines is not risk free. But there are benefits. The regulators assess the risk/benefit. And approve or reject. They don't have an agenda. The efficacy of the Pfizer vaccine is really really good and I am sure exceeded their expectations and surprised. The Oxford/AZ vaccine is really good. My money would have been on the GSK/Sanofi vaccine, but it was pulled when the data didn't look good and is being reformulated. So much for my opinion, best leave it to the regulators with all the data. [Post edited 5 Jan 2021 17:10]

Findings? Thus far, as a cure for coronavirus, youâve propagated: (i) hydroxychloroquine; (ii) a powerful light up or down an orifice; and (iii) vitamin D. All of it has proved to be nothing but utter nonsense. My particular favourite was a couple of months ago, during the last lockdown, when you posted some hospital statistics from one day with the inference that the rates of hospitalisations were in fact not increasing. When, I think it was TVOS, required some context, your response was âwell, you work it out.â Try applying the critical thinking, that you implore us to apply, to your own so-called sources. For example, by insisting someone is a journalist doesnât make what they say automatically correct.

Powerful lights can't even produce Vitamin D at the local tanning salon, so we might as well use them to keep the pitch warm for Saturday since no one can visit salons during lockdown. #Zanussi #Theapplianceofscience #Don'ttrytoputasunbedupyour@rsethough
