Anyone else notice the shocking state of all roads in and around Swansea? The slip roads on both sides of M4 junction 45 absolutely diabolical. Motorways rutted and potholed but get north of Brecon and the roads are superb.wtf is going on? My own street is like a quarry road.

One of the problems for many years throughout the country, was that contractors never attempted to do long lasting repairs, and why would they, when they can fill the same hole next year, year after year, or even in some cases after a few months, and get away with it.

When I worked for a Local Authority years ago, these holes were repaired by direct labour and supervised by a Council employed Clerk of Works.

In the long term it would be a hell of a lot cheaper to go back to this system.

I agree. There used to be plenty of repair gangs plus surface renewal projects as well.
The Uplands was done about a year ago but these are rare now.
Austerity had effed up Local Government big time. The vast majority of resources now go into their statutory obligations of Education and Social Services.
There is no money for roads and the gangs have been decimated.
Anyone notice how many drains are silted up? It seems LG has completely abandoned its programme here. Just responding to emergency flooding at pinch points.
Take Dunvant Hill for example. All the drains gave been blocked for years so when it rains it becomes a river. It therefore floods outside the Workies and on the bend leading to Gowerton. A similar problem occurs in Killay Square.
All this running water must cause damage to the road surfaces.

Problem is that these days car and vehicle tax goes into a government pot.
Which years ago was previously set for road repair and maintenance.
The same of national insurance. .. was health and pension. .Alĺ eaten away by the big wigs

Not since 1937 has vehicle tax been set aside exclusively for road spending.

Does any of it go towards road building/maintenance?

It goes into the consolidated fund from which everything is funded so in theory yes. VED is small fry in tax take terms anyway, raises about £6bn per year. And local authorities are responsible for repairing and maintaining non-major roads, not central government.

It's the worst I've seen the state of the roads around Swansea in a long time, possibly since I've been alive.
