So how will we line up? 13:06 - Aug 31 with 11623 views

Where do we think Sanches will fit in? I have got him as our holding midfield player but would be happy switching him and Clucas and allowing him a more attacking role too. Thoughts?

Only concerns are center back. VDH scares me, had a decent game last showing but will have to keep that up for a good few games to ease my concerns. And playing Tammy behind Bony will take away Tammys greatest strength in my opinion which is his natural strikers instincts and predatory tendancies in the box.

What it does show however is there is going to be few chances for Mesa this season. What a strange signing. Certainly has the feel of a Borja type signing. We could have spent that on a quality center half.

The overwhelming feeling I have looking at this side however is that we certainly should not be competing at the wrong end of the league this year come the final few weeks of the season.

Now that we are stronger further forward, I don't think we'll persist with the 3 at the back except maybe in certain away games so would prefer to see Carroll come into the reckoning with Sanches further forward. With Bony & Tammy on the pitch, not sure what Ayew's role is likely to be tbh so maybe Fer would come into the reckoning or maybe Mesa as DM with Carroll further forward.

Admittedly from watching him in the Euros only Sanches hasn't the discipline for a defensive midfielder. He appears to be a box to box midfielder - high energy with a bit of skill as well - so will play further forward in my view. He is coming here to learn not as a finished player.

With all the options we have in midfield I'd go back to the diamond, surely that must be the idea. I'd go for something like

I know I'll get slated for leaving Carroll out, but I think that's what I would go for. If Chadli comes in you would assume he will go straight in for Ayew, and likewise with Arias for Naughton.

Edit - Also, the Mesa selection, would like to see him given a run of games.

I'd go with that with perhaps Fer for Mesa.

That side's good enough to compete with all but the top 6 and even give them a good game.

If Wilf signs I would expect Tammy to be playing off him with Ayew on the bench.

There is serious competition for places in midfield, the main concerns for me are

right back - if arias isn't on, at this stage yiadom looks the only possibility (though stranger things have happened)

Centre forward- if Bony doesn't cut it or gets injured we would be asking a lot of Tammy.

I suspect (hope) that we were sniffing around oliviera and Barnes as back ups so there may be someone else on the list. Any big centre forwards in the £5 -8 million pound bracket scored against us in the last year or so who would be happy to fight for a place?

Most of everything else will depend on how we line up 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 etc, how and where Sanches is going to be used and how he develops in this league.

That looks good for me too. Maybe just swap Mesa and Clucas so Mesa plays in the middle in front of defence with Clucas & Carroll getting up & down in wider positions and linking with Sanches.

No way is Sanches coming here to play anchor in that formation. I expect him further forward linking with bony and Abraham

Clucas and Mesa are interchangeable and have stiff competition from Leroy, Carrol and dare I say Ki

I also wouldn't be surprised to see Clucas given a shot at a back 3 position as well as cover for Olsen.

Yup staring 11 looks solid. Not sure about Clucas so far forward but suspect in interchange with Sanches, Carroll or even Mesa from the bench. Agree on defence and looking at the set up, Arias be ideal as attacking wing back and give us cover. Shame we couldn't upgrade our 4 wingers for one decent wide attacker, but then maybe expecting too much, as with RWB and left side AM / wing it would be perhaps our best late window. Who's our attacking free-kick specialist? Though Carroll but don't know if Sanches has set-okay shooting in his armoury?
