Goals conceded 10:28 - Nov 4 with 2025 viewsBlueStripes

If current trends continue, Col U are on course to concede almost 100 goals in their 46 league matches this season. Has any team conceded that amount of goals in a season and still avoided relegation?

It's a record I can live with if we stay up!

Then next season when our Academy youngsters hit maturity (21+) what might we achieve?

Errm, we came close last season - 77 goals conceded, and dodged relegation by 2pts and 2 places? Newcastle also, conceding 63 goals in 38 Premier League games, the equivalent of over 76 in a 46-match league, and they managed to avoid relegation by 4pts and 3 places! However, hats off to Fulham, who conceded a whopping 83 goals in 46 Championship matches, yet still escaped relegation by 11pts and 5 places!

Bluestripes:

Some stats:
No side conceding more than 70 goals in the Premier League has ever avoided relegation in a season.

Swindon conceded 100 goals in 42 Premier league games in the 93-94 season and were relegated.

In Season 1957-58 whilst in Division 1 Manchester City scored 104 goals and conceded 100 goals to finish 5th on 49 points.
Leicester City in the same league and season scored 91 goals and conceded 112 and finished 18th on 33 points.

Colchester conceded 101 league goals in the 1960/61 season and were relegated to the 4th Division. Average attendances plummeted from 7,810 to 4,954.
Record: Played 46 11 wins 11 draws 24 defeats 68 for 101 against 33 points

On a positive note with decent defenders to return and Gavin Massey to stop the rot up front Colchester will not concede 100 goals this season.

Will TH be sacked; that I can't answer.

Will TH be sacked? I think we can answer that. No.

Robbie Cowling has made that very clear. My guess is TH's contract will run out first. I can't see it being an open ended employment contract with each party giving (say) a "months notice". So I wonder how long is therefore left to run?

Thanks for the stats Durham. So it looks as if the answer, barring a couple of occasions nearly 60 years ago, is that NO, no team has ever conceded 100 goals and stayed up! Over to you Mr Humes!

Halifax Town, bottom of the Vanarama League have conceded 47 goals in 19 matches and have a -25 GD.

They will be another team to concede more than 100 goals in a season and be relegated.
