Official Transfer Deadline Day Thread on 23:28 - Sep 1 by JackSomething | Equally fair comments. Squad depth is a concern, no doubt. But haven't we always been a few injuries away from trouble in that regard? If we'd had a few more injuries in the last few years, we'd have been relying on the likes of Tate, Dobbie, Lita, N'Gog, Vasquez, etc to come in and do a job. It's a problem a club with a budget like ours is always going to face at this level. It's why I like signings like Kingsley, Fulton and Barrow. They're young and unproven at this level, but I'd rather have the likes of them in the wings than the average Premier League journeyman who doesn't give two hoots what happens to this club. I'm sure Monk will be disappointed no-one but Barrow came in today, but I'm sure he's aware it wasn't for lack of trying. |
Yes..agree completely. Monks will know exactly how hard HJ would have worked to tie down players he (or the scouting set up) may have identified. That will never be in question. To go back to my original point though, do we need to be a bit more 'fluid' when transfer deadline day comes around? You are absolutely right in your earlier comments that we have dodged a few bullets, but e.g. when Gomis signed I think he was on best name terms with the Marriott cat, let alone front desk, given how long it took for Huw in Robert Di Nero guise as Jack Byrnes to interrogate him and for his stay at the Marriott to turn into his family holiday! So Mt Gomis have you ever smoked /taken drugs? Do you know the words to 'Puff the magic dragon? If so why? You are right though, the Swans are all about the likes of a Ben Davies getting his chance and taking it, Kingsley may well turn out to be the next Ben Davies. A Leon Britton going from L2 to the Prem and long may it continue.

Official Transfer Deadline Day Thread on 23:44 - Sep 1 by SwansNZ | Could have said that 2 years ago about Taylor. Ben came in and stepped up. Maybe Kingsley would do the same, plus we have Dwight to cover both full backs. For the wing, we also have Montero. Although not in management, Garry has been in football a long time, and I’m sure he knows he will never be able to get all the players he wants. We have had a good window, probably bought in 3 players that are worth around the 10 million mark — not bad, is it? [Post edited 1 Sep 2014 23:46]

I agree we've done really well. We can't forget though that we're a PL club and personally I get a kick out of seeing us land the players that we have done. To leave us short in a few positions in our 4th season as a PL club, personally I'm a little uneasy with. More so the right wing position, GM no doubt is putting far more emphasis than ML on width. I'm sure though the club have done everything to secure the signings of a few players, but I go back to a previous post, do we need to adapt to deal with this ridiculous transfer deadline day situation? What if Monaco out of the blue had matched our valuation for Wilf yesterday ? Huw's interrogation script would have gone into melt down! Finding a new striker, his likes, dislikes, religious beliefs, sexual preferances...all in a few hours! No way.

Thank you, you nailed it. Post of the day to me, as one who is confused by all the anguish. Yes, it's a little disappointing we didn't strengthen the club a little (and that's all it would have been) today, but keeping Bony EASILY outweighs that!

Official Transfer Deadline Day Thread on 22:54 - Sep 1 by ymaohyd | Those who show any interest in my threads will know that I'm not a wind up merchant, a big fan of the board and very much a Garry Monk disciple. I have to say though that I'm disappointed at today's activities at the Swans. As you say, great that Bony is staying, but I must say that I'm very surprised that we have failed in getting a left back and defensive midfielder, along with another right winger. The structure of the club is fantastic and no one is a bigger fan of the board, however the structure does seem to inhibit us on deadline day where a bit of fluidity is needed, something that we don't seem to have in a financial sense. The process of the Swans signing someone always seems like a long drawn affair and long may it continue given what the board have achieved, however I think we need to adapt our structure to cope with the transfer deadline day as we seemed to have missed out on a lot of last minute targets over the years. One question, the player that we've signed from Spurs, is he a defensive midfielder? I'm on holidays at the moment and don't know much about him. |
Not sure if anyone answered your question Carroll to my mind is good enough to be the Jo Allen of our team. He is a little more than a Defensive Midfielder. I think he is far more suited to the DM role Ki or Shelvey who I think need more space to roam. Between Leon, Carroll and Fulton we have some sound DMs. Bothe Carroll and Fulton are not specialist DMs but as you know, neither was Leon in his early days as waltzed up and down the wing. Britton/Carroll/Fulton Shelvey/Ki Siggurdsson/Emnes Midfield is stengthened by Carroll who can play DM better than what we have Based on one game. I hope we sign Carroll before the season is out. I would love Allen back but I can see Carroll getting to be as good. We may need another DM But it looks like it is not our priority Ki and Shelvey have broad shoulders and can play all 3 midfield roles and will improve

I had no worry on Bony leaving yesterday as it was never going to happen, why worry about something that would never happen. We had the time and certainly the money to get the players in that Garry wanted. People saying that we don't want to pay over the odds and only pay what he is worth and what we want to pay................................this is the premier league and what's right and correct when it comes to players, fee's and their wages etc etc is somewhat different to what happens in every day life. There are markets out there to get good players at good prices and reasonable wages and we have had all summer to do it. Im sure Garry has felt somewhat let down and I for one think he would have every reason to do so.

Yes we did have all summer to do it and we signed 13 players in all. So I don't think they were exactly twiddling their thumbs all summer. In an ideal world I'm sure we would have got the extra player or two Monk wanted, but I doubt he's as crushed as you are. Are you just gutted because none of your predicted signings happened (again)?
