We have a skills shortage. We have plenty of young people without skills.

I'm all for this. Give a man a fish he can eat for a day, teach him to fish and he can feed himself for ever.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

For once I agree with Eddie.

18-21 yr olds are in the formative years that will set the pattern for life...if you don't catch them young they will just drift through their careers with no get up and go and no skills.

6 weeks of hard work place boot camp would also do the world of good.

Once they get to eighteen quite often it's already too late.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

But we have to start somewhere. And it's why I completely advocate vocational training/junior apprenticeships in schools.
Get them started earlier, teach them basics and give them a chance to make a worthwhile life for themselves.
I have volunteered in a school. I have heard some awful things from yr6 kids. Not being in bed til gone 2am on a school night, being allowed to watch totally inappropriate programs, taking days off just because they can, no discipline at all.
How can the teachers do their job properly when the parents are letting the kids down so badly.
If Milliband actually got this through I think it would work, as long as he took it further and got to the younger kids too.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

You have to be careful about what you take at face value, but a program I saw made out that a lot of youngsters wouldn't take jobs for various reasons,
1, they are degree educated and think they deserve better than to work in certain areas (such as mobile phone shops or McD's)
2, they won't take a crap job that pays barely more than jobseekers allowance.
3, they are just plain lazy!
4, in some cases, where they have kids, taking a job leaves them worse off.
But immigrants may not be entitled to benefits and are still much better off working over here. Go to a hand car wash in Swansea and it's probably run by immigrants, except the one by Trallwn lidl.
And of course, many immigrants are willing to work hard even in low paid jobs. But a lot of British kids are accused of having a sense of entitlement! Either they deserve a good job or the world owes them etc.
There are jobs, but too many Brits don't want them.

I got nothing against youngsters, my 18 yr old just finished college, all I m saying is this.

It is SO EASY to fall into the trap of lethargy career wise, I've seen it happen to so many young people.

There have never been so many opportunities for people to make money than today, especially with being self employed and using the internet to sell your goods and services.

But no one will progress if they don t have the right ATTITUDE to start with..that s something that cannot be taught in school or college.

Basically, the message is this...Get off your arse and do something if you want money..the world does nt owe any of us a living

To be fair a lot of this stems from Blair's grand vision of putting every school leaver they could into university when some should have obviously been encouraged to do more vocational training .
But the education system is failing kids to a certain extent but some of the blame starts at home. My dad taught me to read before I went to school and my family always took an interest. If I made the school contact my parents over my behaviour I was in trouble!
Teachers aren't teaching so much now as trying to maintain order in class and our biggest challenge as a society is to be able to get children to see school as being highly important to the outcome of their lives and to get them enthused about learning again. And I'm referring to white kids specifically as most other cultures don't seem to have this problem

The educational system has a fundamental flaw.. blaming the homes.. my dad taught me to read.. these kids usually are brought up by single mothers, orphans, abandoned, parents who usually have problems.. these kids are usually in the bottom classes.. they are usually referred to as the 'thickies'.. they are usually the kids who are treated differently from the rest.. the uncontrollable lot.. some smug teachers sat there thinking.. he's a drug addict.. she's pregnant by 16 benefits.. he'll probably rob somebody.. he's never going to grow up.. she'll be claiming disability... no discipline, no class, no future, no hope, because I'm so great.. can't wait to teach the easy class of well disciplined kids from settled homes and backgrounds.. no stress, great.. I think all schools need specialist teachers.. who understand these 'thickies'.. I don't think the people with 'skills' are educating the teachers in the correct manner to approach classes of certain pupils.. because some of these kids have ability..

'Not being in bed till 2am on a school night' assumption.. not fact.. being allowed to watch inappropriate programs.. assumption.. not fact.. taking days off because they can.. assumption.. not fact.. no discipline.. assumption.. not fact. Now rephrase and think. Education and 'skills' you see... clueless most of them.
