How to get there, where to drink and ticket details for QPR’s trip to the Walkers Stadium, home of Leicester City, next Saturday

By Car:

A relatively simple 100 mile trip up the M1 for Rangers fans. Leave at junction 21 and take the A5460 through to the middle of Leicester. Go under a railway bridge and then after 200 yards turn right at the traffic lights into Upperton Road and then right into Filbert Street following signs for the Royal Infirmary. Traffic is a consistent nightmare round the ground before and after the match so allow plenty of time.

Parking:

It’s mostly street parking around the railway bridge and Upperton Road area, the rugby club offers parking for £3 when the Tigers aren’t playing at home, watch out for over keen parking wardens.

By Train

This is East Midlands Trains from St Pancras with a journey time of about an hour – which means you should use the EMT website when booking as they guarantee to be cheaper than all other websites. At the time of writing (Wednesday, September 8) you can go there and back for £31 based on buying single tickets on the 1125 arriving at 1233 (£17) and coming back on the 1753 arriving at 1908 (£14).

The ground is walkable from the station, it will take about 20 minutes. Come out of the main entrance and walk straight ahead, crossing the massive road junction and following the road away from the station that runs alongside the railway line you have just come in on. Cross Nelson Mandela Park towards the rugby ground, walk past that stadium and the Leicester City Ground should become visible over to the right.

Pubs:

Leicester is pretty poor for pubs it must be said. Most Rangers fans drink in the city centre, with plenty of the usual Wettherspoons, Walkabout type haunts within walking distance of the train station. Nearer the ground The Half Time Orange, The F Bar, The Local Hero and The Victory are all listed as strictly home fans only. The Leicester Gateway near the hospital and the Counting House near Morrisons come recommended by the guide, The Hind near the station may be the best bet if you are arriving by train.

Tickets

Rangers have 1300 tickets initially for this fixture. These are priced at £26 for adults, £22 for seniors, £16 for under 22s and students, £10 for under 16s, £5 for under 12s and £3 for under 3s. Disabled tickets are priced the same for a pair. Prices increase by £2 if bought on the day, although if you buy over the phone from QPR you’ll be charged a £3.50 booking fee anyway.

FYI if you are driving in head towards morrisons. As you go around the one way system you will see a turn off for a massive industrial estate. There is loads of on road parking and thanks to the recession plenty of empty offices with massive open car parks to use. If you need any direction or advice then drop me a line on the board.

Also if you want to avoid the traffic come off the M1 a bit further up at junction 21a follow the dual carriageway to the first junction which is signposted glenfield take the 3rd exit and follow this road (a50) past the county council offices, past the hospital, past my house, until you come to the end where the new shopping centre is. Turn right here and follow the road all the way down past the prison to the tigers ground. You can park here or carry on past and head towards morrisons Once you are in the one way system for morrisons stay in the left land and you will see a turn off for the industrial estate come off here. The ground is 5 mins away and the away pubs just next to morrisons.
