Alex McCarthy Replaces Forster In The England Squad Thursday, 1st Sep 2016 16:05 Saints appear to be well provided for in the Goalkeeping department with new signing Alex McCarthy being called into the England squad. I'm a little surprised by the news that Saints new reserve keeper has been called up to replace the injured Fraser Forster in the England squad, whilst on one hand I'm delighted to see another Saints player called up to the squad, on the other hand you have to ask whether there is surely another English keeper with better credentials able to step up to the plate. McCarthy has only played 9 league games in the past two seasons plus another coming on as a sub, since last September he has had only one outing back in March. So no aspersions cast towards Alex, but surely there must be English keepers out there with more of a claim to a call up, indeed with England's poor penalty record you cannot even make a claim on this front after his miss against Charlton this week. Finally does this highlight where Saints are as a club with the fact our reserve players now make the England squad, or does it say something about the England squad and management Photo: Action Images Please report offensive, libellous or inappropriate posts by using the links provided.
