Maybe not the best advice
at 13:38 6 Dec 2024

In the film, The Damned United, when managing Leeds he definitely refers to the need to stop Stan Bowles from playing if they want to win the match. He obviously then signed Stan later so I think he had a high regard for him. Stan's thoughts were different though with his famous quote that when he was at Forest that they communicated by rumour because Clough was rarely at training. Fantastic manager though.

who was your number 2...
at 15:44 21 Aug 2024

This season represents my 50th year of following the Rs so I always have to go back to that era to pick my favourite players even though there have been so many since. My 3 favourites were Stan, Gerry and the great Dave Thomas. Stan had to be number one and in the school playing ground 😊 I remember occasionally reverting to one of the other two. If you put a gun to my head I’d probably go for DT. A fantastic crosser of the ball and that pass he played out to Stan at home to Sunderland (I think). My guess is that after his move to Everton he made a few goals for Bob Latchford too. All done without shin pads at a time when tackles used to fly in.

Dave Thomas would be a definite starter. The best crosser of a football that I’ve ever seen at Rangers and I think he provided a fair number of assists for Bob Latchford when he went to Everton.

Are we staying up?

Putting on my optimistic head, atm both Huddersfield and Sheffield Wednesday would have to get 4 MORE points (inferior goal difference) than us in just 3 matches. Huddersfield also need to play Birmingham so IF they do win that one they’ll take points from a team currently below us in the table. We play Preston on Saturday at 17.15. Preston play Southampton away on Tuesday and Norwich play Swansea at home on Saturday at 3pm so there’s a fair chance that when Preston ko against us they’ll have just learnt that they won’t be able to qualify for the playoffs…hopefully they’ll be easier to beat or at least draw against. Looking further ahead to the Coventry match highly likely they’ll be out of the playoffs. However, on the negative side we don’t score many goals. I still think that we’ll get over that line though as quite a lot is favouring us.

Hi

Go to moneysavingexpert.com for a few tips. This is a Martin Lewis website and has saved me money over the years. Provided that you have a good history add yourself plus your wife (?) EVEN if you don’t plan to drive the car. It’s still expensive but pretty sure you’ll bring the price down a lot.

Road To 76 book
at 18:41 18 Jul 2023

Hi

Not sure if anyone has read the ‘Road to ‘76’ book by Francis Peacock. I’ve just finished it and found it a fascinating read. Plots the history of the Rs from 1967 to 1976. I was never 100% sure on when I’d started supporting this fantastic club - I knew that the Rs were my club in 75/76 but the book filled a few holes and pretty sure that it was the season before. Even if you weren’t born (as my guess is that a few of you weren’t 😀) I’d recommend reading this just to learn a bit more. Book is done in an easy to read format with lots of player interviews.

I’m reading ‘QPR: The Road to 76’ atm, and there’s a piece in the book that says that Paul Whitehouse based Ron Manager on Alec Stock. 😀

One idea might be to put a couple of players together on the line and for those players to either duck when the ball is struck or jump up in the air, depending on whether to shoot high or low. No player could stand in front of them and 2 players together would create a wider space to aim at.

QPR Book Club

I read the Roger Daltrey book. Excellent read with quite a few references to Shepherds Bush. Born in Percy Road, just off Askew Road. Briefly mentions being a QPR supporter, then loses interest in the 70s due to hooliganism, and then later (90s I think) his son starts to support Arsenal, so he starts to like them. Doesn't really seem too interested in football to be honest.

Best and worst gigs you've attended
at 22:33 13 Apr 2020

Best gig: The Boomtown Rats at Brunel University in 1982. Hall was jam-packed - standing only - I was near the front and nearly lost my shoe which was admittedly a little scary, but great gig. Afterwards had to walk between a group of punks and skinheads which was errm interesting ......Stan Ridgeway-a one hit wonder with ‘Camouflage” (good song) supported. The Who in 1989 at Wembley Arena also stood out.....worst gig was Transvision Vamp at Hammersmith.

I wondered if anyone is able to give any details on an ex-QPR footballer that I think played for the R's in the sixties. The name rings a bell with me, but he is a little before my time. I'm working with someone who used to work with him at Coca Cola in Uxbridge, hence the question. I've tried 'googling' him but had no success so far.

I saw Mark Fleming about 5 years ago in Yateley, where he was living at the time (he might still be there). I was out with my daughter in Yateley Common following a heavy snowfall, and I got chatting with him as he was also there with his children. I was wearing a QPR coat, which he noticed, and he then mentioned his name, and that he'd played for QPR. I did vaguely remember him as used to go to a few youth games back in the 80's. From memory, I think he said that he played one or two first team games (one versus Wimbledon from memory). Nice guy and we chatted for about an hour. I went home and dug out all my 80's programmes and did find a few mentions of him. I saw him from a distance about a year later again in Yateley.

Stan Bowles. Sad news
at 13:49 22 Jun 2015

I read a piece in the Mirror (I think) a few years back, when Dave Webb was managing Brentford. At the time he was using Stan to (I think) coach some of the youngsters. He told a story about Stan from his days at QPR that summed Stan up and, I must admit, brought a tear to my eye. Anyway here's the story that I read.....

Dave Webb was travelling back from training in his car with his daughter when he saw Stan walking, and offered him a lift to the nearest tube station as Stan was catching a train. When they got to the tube station Stan gave Dave Webb’s daughter 50 pence. Dave thought no more about this, but when he got into training the next day he mentioned this story to Don Shanks (Stan’s good mate at QPR), and Don said that Stan had only 50 pence on him and had ended up walking the several stops to his destination.

That summed Stan up for me. Great guy, who would literally give you his last penny.

Stan Bowles. Sad news

Stan was probably the reason why I started supporting QPR. At the age of about 9/10 I caught The Big Match on Sunday's, and was mesmerised by this genius running around in the blue and white hooped shirt. Loved his showmanship and talent. Still have a post-it note sticker on my pc at work stating, simply - "Stan Bowles 'Em Over". I think it was probably a newspaper headline that stuck in my memory from years ago.

The Dreams and Memories will live on in the heart for Ever!!!
