He plays the game at his own pace, completely independent of the other 21 players. Not necessarily a bad thing (the beginning of the Plymouth game he was just leaving their midfielders behind every time he got the ball), but it means he probably will drift in and out of games for a while, tonight he did basically nothing, scored and had a hand in the second, then went back to nothing until he went off.

The second goal is a good example of this, everyone else is sprinting around and he's just walking around, even when he's laying it off for Paal.

Overall not great, but given we played a more changed team than they did you'd have taken a draw before the game. Good to be making it through as well though!

Walsh was very good all game (and a good save in the shootout too), Varane much better in the second half, Lloyd looked good off the bench, and Morrison looks a very capable deputy to Cook/JCS. I actually thought, despite us letting them attack a bit too much, we were better in the second half, the only clear cut chance for either team was Madsen right at the end.

On to Luton!

Some good saves so far from Walsh but that's an unreal strike to equalise, nothing he could do to stop that

Squad
at 20:01 23 Aug 2024

I think we're probably done in terms of signings aside from any potential last-minute loans once Premier League clubs have finalised their squads. I do reckon we could still do with a proper replacement for Kakay (i.e. someone who can fill in anywhere across the backline in case of emergency, rather than a not-quite-good-enough starting fullback), if Paal gets injured we don't really have anyone to play LB whilst Fox is also out.

Really impressed with both of them, if we can get three from them, Andersen, and Chair playing every week we could really kick on.

The way the announcement is worded makes it sound like Dembele is almost certainly staying beyond the end of the season. Both should go a long way to fixing the problems we saw at the weekend.

It's likely a lot less than that up front - the tweet says including add-ons and is in euros so I'd assume it's somewhere between €2-2.5 million, which is around what we paid for Celar.

WLS reporting that Hayden is looking to leave Newcastle as a free agent:

https://www.westlondonsport.com/qpr/qpr-need-accurate-decisions-this-summer-and-

"Meanwhile, on-loan midfielder Issac Hayden will seek a financial settlement to leave Newcastle and become a free agent in the coming weeks, potentially paving the way for a permanent move."

Really good today, his kicking (distance-wise at least!) is much better than Begovic and he claimed a decent amount of corners/crosses comfortably. It'll be interesting to see what the club decide to do with the keepers next season, he's certainly done himself no harm today.

How has this season been?

I was hoping we might get a point or two eventually so I'd say a little better than expected

The LFW Confession Box

Up until Sinclair scored at Cardiff I was hoping we might maybe get a point eventually, by the start of September I thought we'd be okay and I couldn't believe how quickly it all went horribly wrong.

When Martí came in I thought we had a chance, and I've been confident about our chances since the Stoke win (although the Stoke and Hull away games came close to changing my mind). It was clear that a major issue over the Christmas break was JCS and Cook not being able to do so many games back-to-back, and everything started coming together as soon as we stopped having a game every 3 days.

Definitely keen for Walsh to start so we can get a better idea of where he's at. A few players who could get an opportunity to properly prove themselves (EDB, Larkeche, and Cannon mainly). Other than that it'll probably be a relatively full strength team, Adomah and Kakay on the bench to get some farewell minutes at the end?

Walsh

Cannon
Cook or JCS
Fox
Larkeche

Field or Colback
Dixon-Bonner

Smyth
Andersen (Kolli if he's back from injury)
Chair

Armstrong

Then Adomah/Kakay plus some of the youngsters (Aoraha, Bala, Tuck, etc.) coming off the bench

Where the hell did that come from? We've definitely played better this season but everything fell our way tonight. Nobody put a foot wrong, genuinely don't think there are any standouts because they were all so good (aside from Colback's silly booking)

so who would you keep?
at 12:40 14 Apr 2024

To be clear, I'm not saying we should be getting rid of them because they're not good enough, I'm saying if we want to avoid getting snookered by FFP like we were this season we need to get back to selling players when their stock is high, and those three are top of that list (I doubt we'll sell more than one of them).

The players I'd want to see in the squad next season:
Cannon, Dunne, Cook, Fox, Larkeche
Field, Dixon-Bonner, Colback
Andersen, Smyth
Frey

Chair, JCS, and Paal are the three that we should be open to offers for given their age/contract situations, but if no offers come in they should definitely stay.

Walsh, Mahoney, Armstrong, and Kolli should all go out on loan, hopefully to League One teams.

That leaves gaps in the squad for at least 2 GKs, 1 CB, 2 CMs, 2 AMs/Wingers, 2 Srikers, replacements for Chair/JCS/Paal, and perhaps one or two versatile backups (a la Kakay)

Keeper for next year

That's not entirely true, is it? The reason we started bringing in signings was because our first three keepers (Dieng, Archer, and Walsh) were all injured/away at the same time

Keeper for next year
at 13:50 11 Apr 2024

I wouldn't be surprised if we get someone on loan next season. We've got both Walsh and Mahoney who are both young and are currently, at the very worst, League Two standard (at the same age as those two are now, Seny was on loan in the National League South).
If one or both of them can do well for a League One team next season we'd hopefully be in a better position to give them a chance this time next year.

Not suggesting we go for him specifically but someone in the same vein as the keeper who Wednesday have right now, who's on loan from Brighton.

Two in four minutes for Charlie Kelman tonight - he's still only 22, not necessarily all over for him as a QPR player.
