Ashes Winter thread 22:31 - Nov 6 with 48057 views | newgolddream | Australia all-rounder Shane Watson faces a battle to be fit for the first Ashes Test in Brisbane on 21 November. The 32-year-old sustained a hamstring injury while bowling in Australia's final one-day international against India last Saturday.
Ashes Winter thread on 16:11 - Jan 4 with 1201 views | CamberleyR | We've probably only won two day's play in the whole series (one of those was marginal, the first day at Brisbane where we had them 130-6 and they finished 270-8) which is absolutely pathetic. Shameful. This hurts far more than 06/07.

Ashes Winter thread on 16:21 - Jan 4 with 1181 views | HollowayRanger | 3 NOT so nice facts 1. The aggregate score of all of England's first innings in this series is 969. The aggregate first-innings score of Australia's last five batsmen - its not-batsmen, in other words - is 1,071. 2. Five times England's top five batsmen have been out for a combined total of fewer than 20 runs. 3. When England are bowled out sometime in the next day and a half, as they certainly will be, it will be the first time in a five-match Ashes series they have lost all 100 wickets.

Exactly. That's why I suggested above keeping only Cook of the current top 5. Bell and especially Pietersen are living on past glories. Pietersen only seems to be motivated by the money in the one day game now. Cook freed of the burdens of captaincy will be the Cook of old.

Ashes Winter thread on 21:27 - Jan 4 with 1127 views | BlackCrowe | It's not good out here lads. However, have met a disproportionate amount of Rangers over the past couple of days - none of them LFW posters though. So if any LFW-ers at the SGC today and fancy a meet and break from mid-strength p*ss then we'll be at the Irish bar in the entertainment district next to Fox studios at lunchtime and at the end of play too. You need to get a 'Smoking Passout' at gate E to get back in.

Ashes Winter thread on 21:37 - Jan 4 with 1120 views | newgolddream | I genuinely feel for the England team just now, and that is rich coming from a "Sweaty Sock", they've been put through the mangle by a pumped up set of Aussies. Now then why are the penal colonies so pumped up? Could it be because the stupid media in the UK were themselves pumping out bilge about it being a "whitewash" for England before they left. The Aussies were left bedraggled by their recent results (prior to this series!), and as usual the media in England were too busy putting smoke up everyones back passage about how easy it was supposed to be. It is the same with every sport that England play, the press make expectations that the players can't always match. If the garbage/gutter press hadn't written off the Aussies then perhaps the weight of expectation wouldn't have been so demanding on the England team, and certainly those Australian cricketers wouldn't have been half so glad to rub the English noses in the brown stuff.
Ashes Winter thread on 21:41 - Jan 4 with 1115 views | BlackCrowe | Aussies would be acting the same whatever the media did. They lose badly, they win badly, same as ever.

Ashes Winter thread on 09:35 - Jan 5 with 1028 views | ozexile | Vaughn wrote a good piece in the telegraph about making pietersen vice captain. That way there'd be someone to offer a different view point. At the moment cook is really struggling. Far too defensive and has taken our cricket backwards. I think it could work if Pietersen can keep his ego in check. As a Pom living in Sydney the next week is going to be hell. If your team loses with pride you can hold your head up but to lose the way we did is hard to take. Feel so sorry for those who travelled from England and spent thousands.

Isn't one from what Vaughn was saying. The last series it was prior but the didn't feel it worked. Bell hasn't got the personality and they haven't asked Broad who is one day captain.

I heard Vaughan on Radio 5Live this morning say that he'd never seen an England team ever play before that had completely thrown in the towel as he saw today. I would like this thread to be closed down tout-de-suite and we never mention the 2013/14 Ashes series again. Just like the 1985 League Cup Final - we turned up but the players didn't - it never really took place, alright? Oh and instead of flying them back to LDN Heathrow how about dropping them off at Greenland instead.Four weeks enforced reflection in the cold - ugg boots instead of sunglasses - on the spit they just done might do them some good.

I put the Australians' Ashes success down to a national feel good factor since Tony Abbot was elected in September. It would be no surprise if it was down to a butterfly effect which uplifted the right-wing press (Julia Gillard/Kevin Rudd? 'strewth!!) and Cricket Australia finding their long-lost cockiness towards the Mother Country and life in general. I liken it to new manager syndrome in football. As far as Pommy-bashing to the average Ocker in Wonglepong is concerned, it's 'normal operations resumed'. Some things never change...

Ashes Winter thread on 12:21 - Jan 5 with 940 views | newgolddream | The worst thing is the nature of the 5-0 whitewash. At no point did England look like they might achieve a draw let alone a win. Yes, some of the bowling wad good but the batsmen were worse than terrible and failed at any point during any of the innings to support the bowlers. I don't understand how the ECB can show support for Cook and Flowers? A transitional period? I can't think of a worse overall performance from England in an ashes series.

Good post. There's more to batting than just technique as anyone who has played the game at whatever level will tell you. You have to have a bit of courage, fight and determination . Something totally bereft from the the top 5 or 6 batters in the England team. Embarrassing.. Well done Australia far too good for us

Ashes Winter thread on 19:45 - Jan 5 with 887 views | newgolddream | HOW could the England team have expected to win. Look back to last Summer if it hadn't been for the rain the Aussis would have won the Ashes then. The only thing for the team to do is a complete rebuild with Young blood like Ben Stokes who has shown he can take it even on his first test.

Yes well done to Australia, although I'm not convinced that they are much good either. They head off to South Africa next month, so it will be interesting to see how that goes, and indeed how many of them will actually turn up over there. I don't see how the English management structure can remain in place after this. It feels like a structural failure rather than something that you can just twiddle a knob to sort out. The players look burned out now so how can you resolve that when 'intensity' is your buzz word. Do you look for new players to burn out or do you try a different approach to get the existing ones back on track? I'd like to see a new approach from a new team.

Worst thing for me was that every test was lost by the end of the third day, in some cases by the end of the second. Listening on the radio to the 1st test, 2nd day, 2nd session, when we lost 5 for 9 runs, the 5-0 looked on right then. As an England fan that hurts but as any sort of cricket fan other than an Aussie it's worse - the whole point of test cricket is that it ebbs and flows over 5 days preferably as part of a 5 match series. In this series there were about 8 days play which were just filling in time while Australia did the necessary to finish off matches they had already won. Worst run tour by England in my lifetime, no exaggeration. 2006 was much better and that was supposed to be record-breakingly bad. Teams in the 90s put up more fight and had technically worse personnel. Just appalled that the ECB have come out and said Flower and Cook's jobs are safe - maybe they should stay but to say so without even bothering to conduct a post-mortem - simply negligent.
