EUROPA LEAGUE GROUP A: VALENCIA V SWANSEA CITY Venue: Mestalla, Valencia

Kick-off: 18:00 BST Coverage: Live BBC Radio Wales commentary; live text updates on the BBC Sport website.

Winger Pablo Hernandez will miss Swansea's first group game in the Europa League, against his former club Valencia on Thursday.

The 28-year-old Spaniard has been ruled out because of a hamstring strain and will also sit out Sunday's Premier League match at Crystal Palace.

But Swans striker Wilfried Bony will be fit to face Valencia.

He sustained a rib injury during Monday's 2-2 Premier League draw with Liverpool at the Liberty Stadium.

Having played in the Europa League and Champions League for the Spanish club, he had hoped his friends and family would have the chance to see him in action there for the Swans.

Speaking before he sustained his hamstring injury, Hernandez said: "Valencia are a big team, and the [other Europa League group] matches against Kuban and St Gallen will be very difficult too.

"But if we can finish first and Valencia second then that would be perfect for me.

"The Mestalla is a big stadium in Spain, and they have great fans too."

Swansea qualified for the group stage of the Europa League after beating both Malmo of Sweden and Romanian side Petrolul Ploiesti in the qualifying rounds.

The Swans entered the Europa League by winning the Capital One Cup with a 5-0 victory over Bradford City at Wembley in February.

Jesus Christ what a performance. Bony was superb, destroyed their centre halves. Pozuelo amazing. Close control by god. Michu was class as always, that 2nd was a great team goal. Assist for the 1st too. De Guzman's free kick was one of the best goals from us I've seen.

Great all round. Clean sheet is a bonus.

Still buzzing from that. Jack army were great too.

Incredible.

How's Kemy Agustien doing down there?

He has been in and out of the team so far. Too early to say. I heard he was injury prone at the Liberty Stadium. Hopefully he'll be better than Ryan Harley. It's a shame Orlandi will be out for a few months. He's decent when fit.

We're a bit light on striking options at the moment. Fancy lending us Michu?

I think overall we played better on Monday against Liverpool. To many sloppy passes and cockiness on occasion but today Bony bossed the game.

Clashes and boos on a nightmare evening for Valencia

Adil Rami's early sending off set the tone of the game, and Michael Laudrup's men strolled to victory thanks to goals from Bony, Michu and De Guzman.

Conrado Valle
Valencia 19 de septiembre de 2013 22:05h

Valencia were taken apart by Swansea at the Mestalla, where they suffered their fourth straight defeat. The home fans were furious with their team, who face former coach Unai Emery's Sevilla on Sunday.

There was not enough time to show whether or not Djukic had done his homework on the opponents or sought to change the dynamic from the three previous games, because with just nine minutes gone Bony dispossessed Adil Rami, who grabbed the Ivorian forward and pulled him to the ground as if there was no referee present. Unfortunately for him, there was, and he was given a straight red card.

You never know, but it's possible that Valencia would have suffered a lot less had Rami kept his arms to himself, even if Bony had gone on to score. But four minutes after the sending off, the striker put the ball in the net regardless, hammering in a deflected shot following a cutback from Michu. If it seemed as if this Valencia team was looking lost at the start of the season and without any confidence at all in what it was doing, with 10 men they became puppets for Michael Laudrup’s side, who have about as much in common with a British team as I do with the Queen.

As the minutes went past, Cañas, De Guzmán and Michu strutted about the Mestalla as if they owned the place, and the "other game" started, that of the reaction of the home fans. The Mestalla doesn't need to look for culprits, it already has them. The fans had banners calling for respect for Djukic and chants against the players, such as "You're not fit to wear the shirt."

Swansea, a symbol of the exodus of Spanish players from La Liga, gave Valencia a lesson in precision, positioning, creativity and speed. Valencia, meanwhile, were slow, lethargic and predictable, and would not be able to surprise any team in Europe not even if they had 12 men on the pitch. Michu, who left the pitch to a standing ovation, and De Guzman, with a wonderful finish, extended the scoreline in the second half to put Valencia and the most vulnerable member of the organisation — Djukic — against the ropes.

'Los Che' looking lost in Europe too

Swansea sails past sorry Valencia

Pablo Egea 09/19/2013

Valencia carried its poor form and lack of cohesion into Europe, being crushed 3-0 by 'Spanish Swansea' at the Mestalla. The Welsh club belied its inexperience in the competition to humble the hosts, just like Betis and Espanyol have done in 'La Liga'.

Though going down to 10 men after ten minutes was hardly ideal — French centre-back Rami was the fall guy — either way Miroslav Djukic's Valencia side continues to show an alarming lack of spirit and solidity. Directionless, the players are instead wandering around like headless chickens.

The match hinged on a now customary loose pass from Ever Banega, whom Djukic had pushed back into a holding role alongside Javi Fuego to inject extra steel into the midfield. Fat chance! Ivorian Wilfried Bony gleefully seized on the gift and burst past Rami, who had no choice but to haul the striker down to prevent a clear goalscoring opportunity. The Belgian referee did not think twice about producing the red card.

Spanish forward Michu celebrated the sending-off like a goal, pumping his fist, and he was soon proved right to do so. Swansea was always in the driving seat from that moment on.

The Welsh club took just four minutes to make its numerical advantage count, Bony taking advantage of some slack Valencia marking to strike after a great run and cross by Michu. Michu himself stroked home a second after the interval, before De Guzmán sealed the rout shortly afterwards.
