Film Nights Recommendations 16:16 - Jul 23 with 6202 viewsA40Bosh

Right, The Mrs and the saucepan lids and the dog have set sail for Ireland today living me in sole charge of the tele-visual equipment and remote controls.

Therefore I am looking forward to 2 weeks of being able to watch what I want as opposed to the usual chick flick crap I get subjected to for the rest of the year with 4 women in the house.

So any recommendations would be gratefully accepted for recently released quality stuff I would have missed and should check out.

Films ideally should should be drama/thrillers types, more cerebral than the expendables and not your Cowboys vs Aliens/transformers type nonsense.

Any recommendations?

To echo above Drive is one of my favourite films of the last five years. Incredible Italo disco soundtrack too. Opening sequence is unbearably tense

The same director also did Bronson which is awesome but a tad trippy

It seemed to pass a bit under the radar but DREDD from last year was absolutely awesome. It totally nailed the Judge and his world - Karl Urban is absolutely brilliant as Dredd. It's uniquely shot (proper distopian vision), well acted, ulta violent, darkly comic, and roundly ignored for some reason. I was bouncing off the walls afterwards at how good it was

Robots each to there own but DREDD was fecking atrocious from start to finish and esp in the middle .

Tarantino night always works
Pulp fiction to start then reservoir dogs , then finish with Djhango fecking brilliant a little blazing saddles at the start but prob his best movie in ages

Then finish with two girls one cup as a night cap

Mesrine 1+2 stunning biographical film of the self styled French gangster.
Subtitles but brilliant.
On the subject of French movies,Tell No One is another awesome movie.
You can't go wrong with either one.
I almost forgot Jo Nesbo's Headhunters, sounds crap but is brilliant.

Animal Kingdom - an Aussie gangster film from about 3 years ago I saw on a plane. An amazingly creepy turn from "Popey".

I wholeheartedly concur.

The original (and far superior) trailer was taken down from YouTube, but I found it again on Vimeo.

Current location: OX10

You have probably already seen it but The Shawshank Redemption is top quality. Django is another excellent one. Gangster Squad also a very good movie

Django Unchained

One of the best new movies i've seen in a long long time.

utter utter Gash

watched it the other night so predictable it was untrue, the only good bits is the role Samuel L Jackson plays
Tarantinos films are getting worse and he has run out of ideas since pulp fiction
ATAF

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

Ha ha i thought exactly the same thing.Reasonable 1st hour then the avalanche of special effects took over to cover up the pathetic lack of quality in one of the most ridiculous stories ever told.

Flight i thought was brilliant in parts, not quite there as a whole, but Les Ferdinand was a surprisingly compelling lead.

A magnificent football club, the love of our lives, finding a way to finally have its day in the sun.

Totally agree with each of these. But I wanted to add that Boardwalk Empire (am in season 2) has the possibility of achieving same iconic status. Excellent so far, fantastic cast.

Argo has been mentioned a few times might have to watch that soon. Ben Aflecks 'The town' is also a good film.

Yep, I thought The Town was pretty good too. Ben Afleck has become an excellent director; Gone Baby Gone is worth watching too.

However, give "I Killed My Lesbian Wife, Hung Her on a Meathook, and Now I Have a Three Picture Deal at Disney" a miss (yes, that really is the title of a short film directed by Ben Afleck)

The lives of others
Once were warriors
The big blue
Requiem for a dream

Enjoy

I would wholeheartedly endorse The Lives of Others as mentioned by Fearless. Probably the best film I have seen in years. It is the sort that will stay with you long after seeing it. It is a German film with subtitles, and is impeccably written, acted and as you wanted something cerebral you won't be disappointed.
