What peeeesees me off, is we are too soft on crime.
The guilty party derserves to suffer the same as his victim(s) before death. None of his quick jab business.

Would a potential arsonist think twice before commiting his crime, knowing he would be burnt to death if caught?

I think yes.

Totally barbaric and medieval i know, but i reckon it would work.

I think you're actually recommending one of the fundamental points of sharia law there. An eye for an eye and all that

I don't want to get into a slanging match, so I'll put it like this:

Any penal system is generally considered to serve one or more of a number of purposes:

1. Retribution. This really does come down to Biblical stuff, an eye for an eye and so on. Philosophically it's a bit fcuked up when the crimes of the State, not least the British State, are considered. But, fair enough, if revenge is your thing and that's what you demand of a penal system.

2. Reform. This is the idea most usually associated with Scandinavian penal systems of turning convicted criminals' lives around so that they might one day be able to either return to wider society. In some countries it is considered quite usual even for convicted murderers to be seen as capable of reform and redemption.

3. Deterrence. Normally people who call for the return of the death penalty talk perhaps about revenge, but most often I think they talk about deterrence. The problem is that it doesn't work and there has, I believe been quite a lot of work to show that that is the case. For a start if a murder is a crime of passion, deterrence won't work; if it's committed by a nutter, again deterrence won't work, and if it's committed by, let's say, an Islamic fundamentalist then obviously deterrence isn't going to work. The men that killed the soldier in London, fully expected to die, it was a (failed) suicide attack. They didn't try to escape, they wanted to fight the whole Police Force. Deterrence fails again under these kind of circumstances.

There is no good argument to bring back the death penalty unless revenge is what you want to base you penal system on. And then, what are you left with? A system that will vastly disproportionately kill the poor, the black, men of low intelligence, people who have all their lives been victims of violence and abuse, and those not fortunate enough to have a good lawyer or the money to get one............ it will also kill the innocent...............

It's quite simply a bad and a barbaric idea. If you want to live in a country with the death penalty move to Saudi.

Excellent post. I would add a fourth purpose to the penal system - public safety. If a person has committed a crime, especially a violent one, then the state needs the ability to assess the danger they pose on release. This is why someone like Charles Bronson has been locked up for most of his adult life when his initial sentences have long been served and others are released early for good behaviour. This dovetails into the reform aspect. Behave, and you will be rewarded. Misbehave, and you will be punished.

You only need to look at the United States for the perfect example of why the death penalty is a bad idea - it's horrendously expensive to maintain, it mostly penalises the most vulnerable of society and it most importantly it does not provide a deterrent.

I have an idea, problem solved.

Put them in a MILITARY prison. No special treatment, no infractions on their 'human rights' and they can mix happily with the other soldier lags.

Job done, they wouldn't last the week.

This is a message to all the do gooders that want to keep these killers alive because they have morals . As a parent I always want to make sure I am around to protect my family and obviously hope we are protected when we are out and about.
So let me tell you this I DON'T CARE if the death sentence acts as a deterrent or not.
I DON'T CARE if you think it is about revenge which it isn't it is about justice.
I DON'T CARE if it makes them martyrs in which it won't is hitler one ?is bin laden one? Is gadaffi one? Is Stalin one? Only lunatics follow and worship those people.
You think they suffer in prison because they don't have freedom well if they were change by feet and hands to the wall and fed by a straw or have to do hard slave labour for the rest of there lives I might agree. Fortunately we live in a civilise country and this won't happen although you lot would be on your moral high ground again if it did lol. So you think they suffer in prison then I am afraid you are just quite simply deluded . Let me tell you who suffers the life sentences it is THE VICTIMS MUM And DAD that suffer the life sentences . The people I am on about are brutal killers and like holloway said the police should have shot them dead while they had the chance but now they will carry on having a voice ,carry on making the news and carry on bringing back the hurt to the victims families every time this happens. Also when speaking about this I will throw in Ian Huntley Ian Brady Peter suttcliffe rose west and more into this category all deserve termination in my opinion. These are all people without morals so let's not be moral with them .

Of course the penal system is based on revenge, how can it be otherwise?Unless you can anticipate future crimes.
The whole idea of the penal system in this country was to get miscreants out of society. Those "wonderful" Victorian jails had single cells where the criminal was left to ponder his or her folly, contemplation of the world that they had lost.No visits and hard labour.
Did it work? No,but the hangman's rope did.And the criminal never reoffended.
Might as well make a virtue out of a necessity and do like the Chinese - shoot the murderer in the back of the neck and harvest the rest for spare part surgery.Lots of useful organs just going to waste.

Poll: So how was the season for you?

Have the victim's mum and dad come forward to say they want the death sentence? If not, I don't think you should be speaking on their behalf. You cannot presume they would react the same as you.

And will killing the murderers bring their son back? No. It will not change anything. It will not ease their grief.

Believing that a society that condemns killing should not practise it does not make anyone a "do gooder".

On the other hand, keeping the murderers in a warm cell and ensuring they get the maximum amount of state money in their council flat once they're released won't bring back their son either...

I remember a few years back reading about a case in Iran of a paedophile rapist killer. On finding him guilty they let relatives of the victims beat f**k out of him .Not just a slap ,I mean nearly to death. Then they hung him over the town square on a crane. Now thats one bit of Sharia law I can deal with..

Well, they get fortysomething quid and no right to housing when they get released, don't they? Which is one reason why so many people released from prison reoffend so quickly …

On the other point, I didn't suggest imprisoning killers would somehow help the victims' families. Whereas the suggestion was made that killing them would. So you're knocking over a straw man there.

I wasn't speaking on anyone's behalf they are all my own words and thoughts tyvm and replying to your other post I never said killing them would help them get over there grief . I said they are better dead than alive meaning if they are dead they will be forgotten about in years to come instead of resurfacing into the news everytime they speak or some newspaper wants a story to sell papers like ian Brady Myra hindley (deceased now thank god)like Ian Huntley like rosé west like the Yorkshire ripper get rid of them victim families don't need to keep on hearing about the shocking crimes they have committed.

And here is the thing, Britain is a great country, in part, BECAUSE of the legal system. Yes, it s true there are always weak spined ninnies who will tell you that the country is going to the dogs, but in fact the opposite is true.

While Britain is not perfect, it is good enough that this sort of violent crime is incredibly shocking. Because there are lots and lots of countries where this sort of violence isn't shocking at all. There are dozens of countries in the world where extreme violence is the norm, not the exception and where a crime such as this one barely registers.

So, you live in one of the most peaceful countries on the planet, and you think that the way to make it even more peaceful is to inject a little state sponsored violence? Hmm, forgive me for thinking that you probably haven't thought it through.

Eh it still does not make this crime or any brutal cold blooded murder acceptable still all you nice moral people with your nice moral opinions havnt given a decent reason why we should let these people that have committed these acts of atrocities live . I will tell you why you havnt it is because you can't whilst I and others have given a number of reason of why they should be put down why can't you see that they don't deserve a life for what they did.
