First band you saw live on 13:47 - Jul 15 with 1612 views | DaleiLama | It has just occurred to me that I'm going to have to change my first gig - it was Deeply Vale, when Hillage/Gong were up there, which on Googling appears to be 1978, pre-dating my previous claim. It was a strange fest ...... in many ways a ground-breaker where punk featured during the day and rock at night. Considering the proliferation of liquid and solid recreational options, it was amazing the fans of each co-existed more or less peacefully. Hillage was flying in from somewhere (Paris?) and was late ..... didn't arrive until after midnight I don't think. Remember walking home to Cassy afterwards (on what felt like a 10m hike but was probably less) with the milkman just doing his rounds and I nicked a pinta from the back of the float, Kes-style, to fortify me for the last leg of the walk.

Talking of punk & rock, me and a couple of mates went to see a new band called the Sex Pistols at Middlesex in 1976. We thought they'd be playing rock Let's just say our long hair and student vibes made us stand out like sore thumbs. We didn't stay till the end, just in case...

First band you saw live on 09:49 - Jul 15 by Salegraham | The first gig I saw(or can remember, it's an age thing) was The Beatles at the Odeon on Oxford Road M/C. Best gig was Little Richard at the Kubiclub |
Little Richard at the Kubi Klub?!! Really? What year would that have been? Was he well known at that point? Incidentally, I know the guy who was DJing the night the Stones didn’t turn up. He says that he and the club owner were chased by an angry mob ( think Frankenstein 😀) They had to escape by leaping the wall into the River Roch and scramble across the weir to the Yelloway bus station for safety.
| The worm of time turns not for the cuckoo of circumstance. |

If you look on manchesterbeat.com it lists all the club's in Greater Manchester and details of who played there. Little Richard was not massive at that time, this must have been in the late sixties, he was big in the fifties, but everyone had heard of him. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

That's correct,Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry and the other 50's rock n rollers was considered old hat in the 60's but they did do tours of the UK because they had a hardcore following here

First band you saw live on 17:09 - Jul 14 by blackdogblue | Was there & think it was snowing as well outside, it was the Moving Pictures tour & awesome… First concert was October 1980, Gillan at the Manchester Apollo. To be honest have been to 100’s of gigs over the years & worked at the Apollo for a while when I was 17/18 so seen many genres play live as well… Next ones I have tickets for are Saxon at the Apollo (moved about 3 times because of Covid so Jan next year I think) & Download weekend next year, Kiss / Iron Maiden fri/sat night.. not going on the Sunday as wouldn’t cross the street to see Biffy Clyro 😀 Still on the fence for a festival in Spain, Scorpions / Wihiesnake next year as well… Would have gone to Genesis at the MEN but then saw the cost of tickets…. |
I haven't seen the prices for Genesis tickets but have been treated to a pair as I managed to talk the price of my g/fs house up by a 5 figure sum over the "offers over" asking price before we moved in together and that's my reward. Which also leads me on to recalling a previous gig and another astounding lack of memory feat. We'd got tickets to see Genesis @ Showering Pavilion, Shepton Mallet in 82 back when I was a student and concerts were relatively cheap cos artists could actually make money selling vinyl albums! I went and stayed at a mates in Hounslow, right under the Heathrow flight path and his dad kindly lent me his old Ford Anglia for us to drive down (mate didn't fancy the drive). We were told not to go fast in it and avoid motorways, so took the scenic route past Stonehenge. Brilliant concert and we were buzzing afterwards but the car wouldn't start. A bunch of lads jumped started us in a muddy field and I got all the way home without stalling a car I'd never driven before as a relatively novice driver (back in the days when students didn't have cars). It was only when we got about 10 miles from Hounslow on the way back that I remembered his dad told me a trick to take something off the engine when it was parked up, to prevent it being nicked, and I still had it in my pocket. My knowledge of how engines work is nearly as good as my memory!

I didn’t go to the Little Richard gig but from memory it was in the Summer of 1964. The story about the owner and the DJ being chased sounds a bit odd geographically. The Cubi was just a little bit further down than the Yelloway bus station on the other side of Slack Street. You wouldn’t scramble across the weir to get to the bus station. If you got into the weir you’d be going away from the bus station and into town. The bus station was where No1 Riverside is now. Clive Kelly, who was the owner has written about that night subsequently and he has never mentioned being pursued by angry fans. Having said that it’s hard to believe much of what he says. He says everybody got their money back but I didn’t and I don’t know anyone who did. He was living in Brazil at one point and whenever the Stones play in Rio he tries to sue them for the money he says he lost. I was there that night and my impression is most people were just really disappointed with Stones no show and just went home. I did anyway. The conditions inside were horrendous and most people were just glad to get outside into the fresh air again. If anything had gone wrong there would have been fatalities, they’d let way too many people inside the club. [Post edited 15 Jul 2021 18:16]

First band you saw live on 07:48 - Jul 15 by BlueMessiah | There were some awful support bands in the NWOBHM days. I remember enduring Starfighters 2 nights running on the AC/DC Back in Black tour. On the other hand, like you I've also seen some belters. Cardiacs supported Marillion around 1984 at the Apollo and were absolutely destroyed by the audience (someone even tried setting the stage curtains on fire to get them off stage) I loved them and they're still one of my favourite bands. Maybe another thread here... |
Can’t remember who it was but there was an unknown little US band supporting them… Bon Jovi.. seen them headlining a few times since (MK Bowl springs to mind) then they went all top of the pops & too commercial for me… no thanks..) Two that do stick in mind was Joan Jett at the Apollo, about 100 people turned up bless & she was asking the audience what do u want us to play next… er .. I love rock n a sausage roll 🤣 The other was at Rochdale Transport club… Featuring ex members of Saxon ðŸ‘, great… a bass player no fooker had heard of & did one album… on the plus side they were a great tribute act & wasn’t out to promote a new album so played the classics 😀
