Boston Match Thread 17:05 - Jan 28 with 12137 viewsDelboy

I must admit that I am really looking forward to this game in the hope of seeing us carry on the fine form we showed on Saturday. Granted the opposition is different and somewhat buoyed by their own victory over the weekend but I am hopeful we can follow up and take advantage of a series of fixtures which could see us spring up the league over the next month. I don't expect Boston to capitulate easily and we do need to be at it from the beginning to prove to any doubters that we are capable of putting together back to back quality performances. One word of caution however based on the goal we conceded at Barnet, its worth noting that Boston also tend to rely on a long throw specialist who is inclined to bomb the goalmouth. Liam Hogan and Sam Waller beware.

Personally I’ll take a lot of convincing to travel from Yorkshire for a Tuesday night home game in the foreseeable future.

Football fix in Halifax tonight ? they have a decent pitch dont they .

Agree,if this was next week and the Oldham Massive were already hot footing it up Roche Valley Way there would be pandemonium on an already explosive situation.

What plans are in hand to get this recurring problem sorted? More sand?

Wouldn’t end well that. Need to get it sorted

Not happy at all. As an exile I bought my match pass earlier to watch the game live on DAZN.

At least they’ve brought the pies from the refreshment kiosk into the bar!

Whilst you're there...

Can you check the Ratcliffe for any dry rot, mould, loose flooring that might result in a late postponement of the Fans Forum?

Yup, same here. So far I’ve spent over £300 on not watching this game. Non league and we know we are.

Boston have posted a photo of the pitch fro. Their dug out heading towards the Sandy.

That's not the area the club has commented on, is it?

This reads as though it is a subjective decision by a ref, that was not expected.

It would be interesting to know if the ref decided on safety grounds or playability grounds.

If not on safety grounds, would be likewise good to know if he consulted both managers before deciding game off.

If the latter, it will be on the lack of bounce for sure. That corner had little bounce v Stoke U21 and Yeovil. The area is right in the corner and if both managers were ok then should be on.

If safety however then that’s poor versus ‘no pitch inspection planned’

Terribly sorry for all fans , especially the Boston fans. Free entry or something for the rematch would be the least we could do.

But if we all commented on it a week ago and a “subjective” ref turns up then it’s obvious there’s a problem that needs to be addressed. And it already should have been.

No. The problem area is near the Police Box at the opposite end.

I'd imagine their photographer was confused by the sheer incompetence of the Dale Board of Directors who have known about this "non bouncing" area of the pitch for weeks yet have done very little to address the problem.

If the ball won't roll then heads must. At the very top.

The point is just who has been told what?

Boston spreading.misinformation? Doubt it.

Did you see the ballsy club statement of 6 hours ago?

Something stinks about this.

Can we not call on a local ref for an opinion ahead of the official ref carrying out their inspection?

It's bollocks and infuriating. I'm and exile who bought another match pass advertised on the club website at just gone 6.00pm.

Surely, if there was a suspicion you of a postponement there should have been a warning.

Already this season I have started to travel up, although not millions of miles away to find that a game has been called off. It really does make the club look pathetic

A couple of personal positives on an otherwise thoroughly miserable night:

1) saved a few quid not buying beer from the Dale Bar, not buying more losing half time draw tickets and not losing money trying to predict a dale scoreline.

2) On the way home called at Badboy Kebab House at Sudden (first visit). If you like kebabs and fancy something a little different, I'd highly recommend it. Felt different not having had a few pints beforehand but well worth a visit.

PS make sure you're hungry when you go!

Just done a 30 minute round trip past the ground and home again, it never occured to me that the game might be off, the weather hasn't been that bad by any means, nothing that a park pitch would have a problem with, so there is something dramatically wrong with the Spotland drainage system, particularly in that corner of the ground.
Now, unless I have dreamed this, wasn't a big drain run from there, down past the main stand, behind the Sandy Lane end goal and out to the main drains on Sandy Lane itself some years ago? Has this drain now become blocked? Has it been rodded recently? Is there even a drawing of where the drain is and how to get into it? Or, did the last make-over just plough over it? How many of the current ground staff were here when that big drain was put in and remember where it is?

This is not about drainage or even rain. Because there’s hardly been any. That corner especially looked a total mess last week.

Q1:
What has been done to make it better?

Until we are specifically told there is an issue with the drains, that remains speculation.

Don’t think it’s time to go down the route of looking for reasons outside our control. Same as anyone blaming the ref for making the decision.

This is all on RAFC to ensure the pitch is fit for purpose.

The club obviously thought it was perfectly playable with the statement earlier. Not sure what the referee saw that was different. The club wouldn't have been happy with the decision. I cant see any way it was unplayable - it was maybe not ideal but just get on with it. Some of the pitches we had in the 80's and 90's looked like that corner all over the pitch! And the Millwall FA Cup game a few years ago was played almost on sand!

Totally get that. But at the same time fans and those present last Tuesday were already commenting on how there was an area of real concern in that corner.

Allowing a ref to have a decision to make is on us. No matter if we all may disagree.
