One of the Owls comments was "They were given a chance in the 80s to redevelop and move to White City Stadium, but fans voted against it".
I could be wrong but I don't recall there being a fans vote? If there was I could understand going against it as we'd been there twice already and it was unsuccessful and football then isn't like it is now (or could have been predicted).
IIRC the cost to just buy it was more than our record signing of the time then you still have to look after and maintain a huge stadium and it would be years before Heysel/Hillsborough and the Taylor report and the Sky money etc that would eventually enabled the place to be demolished (very expensive) and rebuilt. Even then all the early new stadium rebuild were horrible identikit flat-pack look-a-likes.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing but my god if only we had bought that site......
