How worried should we be at how 'off it' he was v Hull? His replacement by Saito was like fumbling in the dark giving way to the Land of the Rising Sun! I know he had a couple of great assists recently, but it's been a real tough ol' season for Ili, and obviously his lack of pre-season and then missing a big chunk of this one when he was feeling his way back in have had a physical impact. I wonder how he's feeling in mind and body right now.

He is our best player as proven season after season.

Today, he is one of many players that can impact a game and a result.

In previous years it was Ilias and if he was injured then the game changer sometimes was Willock and that was it.

I think he is doing just fine. Not up to speed just yet, but nothing to worry about.

He is a first team choice selection if everyone fit and if he is not completely convincing, we have options on the bench.

Nothing to be worried about at all for me.

If we are worried now after 13 game run of top form and results, we are always going to be worried.

I didn't say I was worried about our superb run (obviously, I'm not), but was/am raising a fair concern about someone I agree has been our best player for some time. I think it's hard for him to get fully match-fit after the season he's had, and the pre-season he hasn't, that's all.

And, yes, I'm always worried, always wanting us to do better. (In another life, I'd be a coach if I weren't a writer/editor.)

PS Even though I'm not ignoring Padula's Shampoo (or anyone) technologically, I will morally!

Illy did just fine. Maybe not reaching his highest standards of recent times but he's still one of the first names on the teamsheet.

Last night they were doubling up on him every time, sometimes with a third nearby as a backup. Saito didn't get that treatment so was able to be more of an impact. We should have taken better advantage of Illy pulling defenders towards him than we did.

He had a poor game by his standards, I felt, and it was good to see MC make the kind of brave, proactive, decisive, decision to use his bench at h/t he was unable/unwilling to do at Leicester.

I also think the point you make about better exploiting the space in the first half highlights Chair's long-standing weakness about not releasing the ball quickly enough at times. A few times, he lost possession through trying to do much, which I think his current lack of match sharpness is exacerbating.

I get where you are coming from Mr Elbow, I think Illias not playing yet to his high standards and that not killing our creativity is a positive. He is obviously not 100% yet and don’t think has scored a goal. The best is yet to come, valid point though and because of who he is and what he has done I understand why you bring it up…. Kept he faith

Coming back from injury, got a decent assist 4 days ago and hull did double up on him.

Well, I don't think he's ever been subbed off at h/t before for footballing reasons, has he, so that was noteworthy if nothing else. I really hope he feels he can play his way back to the pocket magician we know he can be, but whether that's with Saito, or alternating with him, is an intriguing one, and remains to be seen. On the basis of last night, (and it might just have been a grey day at the office for him), I still think Saito has a good case for starting in Ili's stead next time out.

Yes and with not being up to full speed currently but still only one game ago, despite not capitalising on a decent one on one chance himself managed to keep his composure in the same move to intelligently assist the winning goal by finding Kolli in space.

So still making an impact...

But you are worried about him Stainrod

He came off after 57 minutes. Probably best not to just make things up to suit your arbitrary rhetorics.

Definitely passing more now also.

Realises it's not all on him as it has been in previous seasons.

All good.

Tough season for him, pre-season interrupted by injury which is a major setback as he'd be playing catch up ever since. Then another injury when he was feeling his way back in. He'll be fine but no surprise he's not near 100% just yet. Will be a big player towards the end of the season. Him and Dembele.

I think with Chair is the sort of player and the way he plays he has to be fully fit and sharp for us to see his attacking intent. He is such a whole hearted playing with the yards he covers that sometimes this can have a detriment to his attacking game. I think it was just one of those nights. A number of games in quick succession and probably just feeling it a bit and just the way the game itself unfolded. I think it was a good situation to be in to he able to actually take him off and have someone come on who had an impact. Shows a bit of depth to thr squad

I actually thought Morgan was looking a bit leggy in the first half. I thought it might have been interesting to see chair play in Morgans position and Saito go out wide.

Just to add. When everyone is fit we have quite a few options. Defence looking solid. Well, centre back is. Also Dembele to come back too. I thought he started well for us but then the teams general form and struggles effected his firm too. Hopefully we are still doing well when he comes back to the team. Would like to see him in a team playing well.

Not taking sides and yes he was subbed at 57 minutes, but I think Mr Elbow has a valid thread.. I wonder if we all had our names on the back of our shirts at the next game what would happen🥳

Difference this season from previous is that he was carrying the team, now he isn’t, if he does have a “below his standard” game it’s less noticeable.
He got an assist on Saturday, he just needs a goal.

Would prefer to take the positive from Chair's below par performance and relish the fact that we won without him, something that would not have happened a year ago. We obviously really struggled at the beginning of the season, and Chair's absence was a part of that. But while he has contributed to our up-turn with a couple of superb assists (by providing early crosses - who'd have thunk it) and only for poor finishing by Frey would have at least 2 more. However, we are much more the sum of the parts now, rather than reliant on one player.
But last night he was a little off (as was Morgan and Kolli imo) so we adjusted and won without him (and Cook/JCS - the mainstay of our central defence). I am actually very excited by what Saito may provide now that he he has finally broken his duck - and how!

And how good does it feel to have a choice for the first time in God alone knows how many years?

I think some people on here need to remind themselves of exactly how far we've come over the last year in particular.

He hasn’t reached anywhere near the form he’s showed in previous seasons, lots of very valid reasons for that. Personally I still don’t think he’s fully match fit?
I’d still start him Saturday!

He had an off day. He is allowed.

Marti spotted that and subbed him.

End of story.
